Summer Institute

After working at the Summer Institute camp for five years I have learned and been able to use apply my interpersonal and communication skills to work with people such as clients and staff members. In addition, I have developed conflict resolution skills and learn day to day business operations. As a volunteer I was there to assist the counselors in preparing their daily activities for the campers. Once I became a counselor I was in charge of making weekly lesson plans which help teach campers how to play a variety of sports such as Soccer, Volleyball, and Table Tennis. I would continuously work with program leaders (upper management) to help ensure that daily camp activities were successful and enjoyable for all. The hardest part of the job was ensuring that all participants were fully engaged in the activity. To overcome this, all needs were heard and taken into consideration to assure they were enjoying the activity. Finally, the most enjoyable part of the job was to create a fun and safe environment where campers can meet new people everyday and have an amazing time.

My experience at summer institute was exactly what you would expect at a summer volunteering gig; carrying around items and watching over kids, all during the warm sunny weather.

The staff and fellow volunteers I worked with were very kind and collaborative, so we didn't run into any issues.

They gave us all basic assignments, but a main chunks of our job had to be kind of, picked up on our own.

Though it may seem like an extra hassle, that really developed people's initiative and leadership skills.

You got a lunch break between two four hour periods of non-stop work, (even though some volunteers were lazier than others and hid during their shifts.) so be prepared to be exhausted at the end of the day!

Working at Summer Institute taught me a lot. It taught me how to collaborate with others to be successful. It also taught me how to deal with management who did not fully understand what they were doing. It was a great learning experience and it was overall a fantastic summer job to have and I do recommend it to others.

The day starts off like a school day with attendance and getting put into your groups, we go around with our groups taking them to different activities or even leading activities, we get to work with kids who are funny and outgoing and make the long, hot days worth it.

Summer Institute was a wonderful job. I enjoyed working with my staff and most of all interacting with the students I taught and supervised. Everyday I was glad to wake up and get to work. It was a friendly workplace.

As a volunteer during the 2019 Summer, I was thrilled to work with counselors I've met before and news employees. The management seemed fair and the kids would actively participate in their given activities. As a volunteer I was not paid but rewarded volunteer hours towards a high school diploma and a job.

We worked with a variety of students, exploring the types and mechanics of a Lego robot and how to construct them. We supervised and assisted the head leaders of the camp and also assisted the students with the construction and clean ups.

Summer Institute was a fun place to volunteer. I completed my volunteer hours that are required for high school with ease and had a great time with the other staff who were warm and welcoming.

Supervisors and staff are very caring and communicative there, always willing to teach me new things and show me all of the ways I could improve or try to do better.

I enjoyed my summer job at the summer institute, i love working with children and playing with them. We would frequently be outside and went on field trips at least once weekly
