Sussex is a great place to start a career. The 12 hour shifts are great for learning the business. The job can be stressful, with the type of clientele who frequent the business. Once the basics are learned, and the culture sets in, employees quickly find that management and/or upper management is lacking. 

Corporate office is a disorganized mess and the franchisee's have too much control over their own environments, leading to poor employee satisfaction and a high staff turnover rate, in certain locations. 

Finally, for those who wish to excel in the field of insurance, Sussex has a business model that prevents any growth into real insurance. The branches do not offer homeowners or commercial lines as they prefer the call-centre model that Canadian Direct employs. 

If you are happy just being an ICBC agent and working 3 days per week at 12 hour shifts-this is a good JOB for you. If you want an actual CAREER in insurance, Sussex is not the place for you to be employed in the long-term.

I started here as my second-ever job. I was excited. Turns out I'd been taken on at a time of decline. By the time I was looking for another job, the workers who'd spent the longest times at the office I'd worked at were jumping ship too.

The story I was given (and experienced the tail of) was that the old owner of the franchise was more generous with December bonuses and more generally "chill." For example, the dress code used to just be roughly formal, then it changed to a tacky "black pants + $14 Sussex logo vest" theme where everyone looked the same; or even with customers they used to get fruit platters and such from the supermarket the office was in and share with the customers. Sounds like it has the potential to be weird, of course, but the point I'm getting at is that it all became a bit too micromanaged for me.

Typical day at work can be fast paced or extremely slow.  I learned Autoplan inside/out, and some private insurance companies. Co-workers are helpful and awesome, saw many come and go during my time there. Management lacks personnel training, no understanding of job/life/balance and management made working conditions difficult.  Management had constant critiquing over everything with minimum praise, threats of withholding commissions, verbally abusive.  Difficulties with payroll information, benefits.

Auto Insurance was the every day norm, 

Management was okay, listened and guided to succeed, hardest part was during that time no benefits were provided and had to submit hours of work manually.

Enjoyable part was a mix of staff and client and the distance  to my place.

Hardest part was,  the office was mostly Auto based and road running, opportunities to learn Habitational and even commercial was not present

as someone who depends on a consistent schedule due to home life reasons and management knows this. no consideration was taken when they suddenly changed the schedule to completely the opposite of what was promised. your word doesn't matter unless you speak Punjab or related. they will cut your hours, not go by company policy and speak in a different language in front of you and if you say you have open availability, you'll be working 12hr shifts everyday or have one day off.

This was one of the worst places I’ve ever worked. Management was awful the other employees were out right rude and disrespectful. The managers are mother and daughter which I found unprofessional and made for a very unfair work environment. The pay was not very great for dealing with angry customers. Unfortunately your the face of icbc and people aren’t happy with the changes so they take it out on you. Other locations might be great but can’t say the same about this one.

Schedule fact-finding appointments and consultations to determine client needs and overall financial situations. Organize racks and shelves to maintain store visual appeal, engage customers and promote specific merchandise. Accommodate new and different insurance requests and explored new value opportunities to optimize insurance agency reputation. Perform various administrative functions, including filing paperwork, delivering mail, sorting mail, office cleaning and bookkeeping

Company fine ownership bad, you work full time they hire more agents your job  hours gone no stability, makes you pay your license no place does that

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Horrible everyone thinks they are the boss no manager

Just go there to get your experience and then move on. The management gives no incentives to stay. Most of the offices are support smaller and you literally bump into and get in each other’s way. If you’re good at your job then they just have you train everyone with no remuneration. My worst complaint is office space, toxic environment, and minimum wage pay. 

Noise environment cold in winter hot in summer. Little or no assistance with learning. 
Long line ups no desk to sit at with customers half the time you have to talk so loud you impede on privacy.
Customers can be very rude because they treat you like a fast food restaurant.
Poor bennifit coverage you pay for. 
Eat in front of customers. 
No proper pay for over time or stat holidays.
