Syncrude

over the past 4 years I have worked on 3 different fluid cokers within my current company. We work rotating 12 hour shifts on a 3 days and 3 night with 6 off schedule. 

a typical day within my experience involves standard mechanical and safety rounds multiple times per day if not outside all day. I have taken care of fluid coker unit processes, such as heavy ends processing, sour gas processing, working with large compressors, air blowers, turbine and electric pumps, fractionators, boilers, exchangers, steam production, reactor and burner management, isolations, shutdowns, start ups and overseeing that all work is completed from paperwork down to cleanup of the posts.

i have learned to work quickly and efficiently while keeping all process circuits, troubleshooting techniques and hands-on job completion in a high tempo environment working mainly outdoors for 12 hour shifts all year long.

i find the hardest part of my job is continuously doing the same tasks repeatedly and I am looking to expand my experiences and knowledge within the field so as to keep me in an upward learning curve within the field.

the most enjoyable part of my job is working outdoors and not sitting at a desk all day.

Attend a meeting for the schedule maintenance. Talk about the budget for the year end. My boss help me in time of need. Cooperation with the person involved. The hardest part is when their is trouble and hard to find parts for the equipment. The most enjoyable parts is the friendship and support with the employees.

I enjoyed working for Syncrude. Not only because it was my first employment opportunity in Alberta, but for how fun they made it seem and how much I felt right at home.
The management really took care of their employees and made sure everything was running smoothly. The hardest part of the job is figuring out what else there was to do once we were finished our work for the day. I would always finish really early in my shift and go out and find other work to do in my station.

good environment, good people, hard working staff, good salary, community is unique, cold winters but makes you tough. I have learned over the years you have to assertive, have a good attitude, be yourself. The hardest part of my job is dealing with negative people, dealing with people who think every thing is easy but are not the one s doing the work, my work place culture is people come from all walks of life, safety is driven home at this place, which is very important.

Syncrude was a very culture-focused workplace environment, trying to instill a strong sense of safety and collaboration in its office teams.

My team was eager to get me involved in projects and teach me what I needed to know as we went along, developing skills to meet demand. Syncrude was insistent on providing workers with good supplies to enable high quality work, including an ergonomic workplace (adjustable computer work station and chair).

I worked for AMEC Americas Oil sands - not for Syncrude.   Syncrude is our client.   I cannot review SCL but I can say that my interaction with their staff in Calgary and at Fort Mcmurray have always been positive and largely enjoyable(always, in any large organization, with Client interaction, there will be good days and some a little more challenging - depending on the programme and where we are perceived to be ...)

I enjoyed working there because the management is very reasonable and understanding.  I was able to explore different areas of payroll including filling in for front desk duties and working with accountants closely to make sure our process runs smoothly.  I loved being challenged when new situations are being presented.  Also I didn't mind helping the other payroll analysts when the work load gets to be too much for that one person.

Gained great insight on the processes and policies in producing bitumen. 
The openness to utilize the staff as resources for information made the learning transition much shorter than expected enabling new hires to show productivity in a shorter time frame.
Management is very easy to deal with. Open door policy puts to bed any concerns or questions.

when it was time to go home and days off

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
 going to work was. to much favoritism on that site

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
mostly toxic unless you are a leaders girl or play golf  there is alot of cut throats 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
same day in and day out its toxic

Recent economy downturn and company ownership changes have destroyed what was once a GREAT company.  I enjoyed the best of times from 1983 to 2002, then things went downhill fast. I went back as a contractor and saw many unhappy people there but the company butt kissers all did okay. I am glad I got out when I did. .
