Worked there for 3 years on the sales desk. Things were okay in the beginning until some of the core staff starting moving on to different departments, instead of filling their spots with reliable skilled individuals they either increased the course load on the rest of us by A LOT - suddenly we were doing tasks outside our job descriptions and doing the work of multiple people... or they would begin to hire people that didn't fit the job but rather just the "image" they were trying to achieve as a company - clearly skill set started to not matter. In result this created a high turnover rate near the end of my time there. 

The management started off being very hands on and always interacted with their staff in a friendly way - near the end of my time there it had completely changed to where managers were in their offices with the doors closed all day long no longer with smiles on their faces and cheery dispositions.. me and many other coworkers were convinced that this place was making us all miserable. 

Do not work here if you cannot handle high stress volumes - working with the food industry is very demanding even from just a "call center desk" you're expected to go above and beyond for your customers but get little to no recognition for it. BUT make one simple mistake (which you have to expect with human error and working under pressure) and suddenly you get a "strike" ....well 3 strikes you're out. I've seen it happen to a couple people over my time there.

A distinct memory of mine that changed at how I looked at the company was when one of our full time employees passed away suddenly and the managers allowed none of us staff to attend the funeral.. Instead we were told by our sales director that we must "continue with business as usual" this is someone we saw 40+ hrs a week for a couple of years - this was more than a coworker to some of us and the message came clearly to some of us that we were just a number to them and can be replaced like that. I think that was my turning point with the company.

Don't apply for a sales desk position if you value your weekends. The shifts are almost always Sunday - Thursday. Sure you get the Friday off which is nice BUT - they make up for it by making you work every single holiday and long weekend. Long weekends will no longer exist for you working at the order desk. AND it's like pulling teeth to get requested time off. It's nearly impossible to work here as a student as there are no evening shifts the hours range from 8-430 9-530 10-630 and 1030-7.

Now it wasn't all bad - or else I wouldn't have stayed for as long as I did. You do build relationships with your coworkers and the customers you deal with on a daily basis, there are definitely aspects that I had found made all the stuff we dealt with "worth it".

But nonetheless it is not a healthy environment if all the staff have the attitude of "well this place is horrible but at least we have each other..." I was almost forced to go on stress leave at this job cause I couldn't take the treatment we'd get for doing the best we can with our resources but it still "not being enough" in their eyes. I began dropping weight like crazy, my hair was falling out. I would be physically ill from stress to the point that I was almost throwing up on a daily basis for months at a time.. 

And guess what... all of that changed when I finally got the courage to put in my 2 weeks and explore new job options. They offered me a raise the day I put in 2 weeks but turned it down cause even then it wasn't worth it at that point. Honestly I haven't looked back - the only thing I miss from that workplace was my coworkers. This may be not a bad place to work if you are planning to do it for a short period of time but I seriously don't know who could handle this high stress long term.

The typical day at work includes a pre-shift meeting with the management and supervisors to go over the daily safety topics and other issues in the business.

Your shift starts out by doing a safety check on the equipment you are using to ensure proper policies are followed in order to prevent accidents or any unsafe conditions. A machine must be approved on all conditions before use.

Once you are set up you get your first order and begin building up your skids. You can work in either Dry, Cooler or Freezer environments where you select cases in order to build skids for what each customer needs. Your progress is tracked based on your scanner and the time it takes you to complete an order and drop it off on the dock for shipping.

Management provides good insight on what to do to ensure proper selection of cases and how to keep the customers happy by placing the boxes safely on the skid to avoid damage.

All employees work together to ensure safety, using our truck's horn to signal properly and co-exist without crashing into each other or our surroundings.

The hardest part of the job would be the physical strain it can put on your body. Lifting is very important in that you should use proper lifting technique to avoid soreness and/or injuries.

Repetitive motion can wear you down so it is very important to take care of your body in order to do this job well. Recommended spending time at the gym, eating properly and getting enough rest.

The most enjoyable part of the job is that your co-workers are very helpful and good people. They can easily become good friends and make the work environment enjoyable. 

You are also paid fairly well considering this job does not require extensive education, but the physical toll it puts on you makes it worth it.

Working the night shift can be rewarding for part-timers as it provides good income for a student who has classes during the day.

Although not everybody is a night owl, some people enjoy driving home when the roads are clear as opposed to rush hour.

I work as an order selector. This job is physical, and you'll have to push to yourself beyond your comfort level in the first couple of weeks if you want to make it. 100% ELS is going to feel impossible in the beginning, but it will get easier as time go on. The key is to keep your mind relaxed and focused, and you body fast and relaxed; and 100% ELS will come easily. If you allow yourself to be stressed then the job may not be for you.

This job uses the scan and label system for increased accuracy instead of the voice system for speed. I find technical difficulties can slow you down from time to time, but you can write it down on a delay sheet.

You'll be driving a triple pallet forklift, so expect tight turns and limited accessibility when dropping off your pallets in crowed conditions. There's no impact alarm so you won't need to work about running over a bump.

To save time always carry a pick stick, 2-3 printer label rolls on your vehicle during each shift. I typically line my pallets with cardboard at the start of each trip, so I'm not scrabbling for cardboard later on. Having a bag to disgard your printer label tape is helpful.

When building make your corners strong, and give your pallets a quick wrap if you feel it's not quite stable. The more stable your pallets are the faster you can drive, and the easier your job will be.

If you recieve a batch with a multi prime, just wave down a reach to grab you a pallet instead of hand picking 50 pieces. It will save you time, and you won't need to individual label each case in this scenario. Just slide the tape of printer labels inside the pallet and you're good.

A good way to tell when the shift might be ending is based on the truck numbers that typically end in the 400s.

Earning incentive is tricky as not only do you need to pick x amount of cases, but you also can't make more than 1 mistake per 1200 cases which is tougher than 100% ELS in itself. Though incent

A benefit of the job is having free access to the expresso machines on your break.

The company has a strong name, but at the site level, I felt the Maintenance Supervisor role was not respected as a true leadership position. In my experience, senior leadership became involved in maintenance decisions without having the proper technical maintenance background, which created confusion, poor alignment, and unnecessary pressure.

A Maintenance Supervisor should be responsible for reliability, preventive maintenance, equipment readiness, contractors, spare parts, safety, documentation, and downtime reduction. Instead, the role often felt pushed toward labour work, operator support, and production tasks, rather than proper maintenance supervision.

The biggest issue was the lack of clear boundaries between maintenance leadership and general labour expectations. If a company hires someone as a supervisor, that person needs authority, support, clear expectations, and the ability to manage maintenance professionally.

Future candidates should ask carefully whether the role is truly a Maintenance Supervisor position or whether they will be expected to cover labour and operator duties while still being held responsible for maintenance results.

This is my personal experience only.

 had the unfortunate experience of working at Sysco Toronto, and I can confidently say that it was one of the most disappointing and frustrating job experiences I've ever had. The issues I encountered during my time there were nothing short of demoralizing, and I feel compelled to share my experience.

Poor Treatment of New Hires:
Sysco Toronto's treatment of new hires is abysmal. From the very first day, it was evident that the company lacked a proper onboarding process. We were thrown into our roles with minimal training, making it nearly impossible to perform efficiently. It was clear that the company had little interest in investing in its new employees' success. This lack of support was extremely disheartening and set the tone for the rest of my time there.

Lack of Managerial Support:
One of the most frustrating aspects of working at Sysco Toronto was the complete lack of support from managers. Whenever I encountered problems or needed guidance, it felt like I was left to fend for myself. The managers were either unavailable or uninterested in helping new employees succeed. This lack of leadership led to confusion, errors, and a general sense of chaos in the workplace.

Ineffective Systems for Pickers:
The systems in place for pickers at Sysco Toronto are woefully inadequate. The tools and processes provided were not only outdated but also incredibly inefficient. The expectations set for pickers to meet certain productivity numbers were unrealistic given the constraints of the systems in place. This resulted in constant stress and anxiety for workers, making it difficult to maintain the required performance levels.

In conclusion, my time at Sysco Toronto was marked by disappointment and frustration. The poor treatment of new hires, lack of managerial support, and ineffective systems for pickers make it a challenging and disheartening place to work. I cannot recommend this company to anyone looking for a supportive and well-organized workplace.

I was lucky to have a great supervisor and some good fellow drivers but the company was a total meat grinder to work for.   Despite being unionized the company is expert at using people seasonally with promise of long term employment and will discard you at the six month probation or the minute you get hurt on the job which is guaranteed with the demands placed on drivers.   Start times vary between 2am and 6am and you never know when you will finish any given shift.  Expect to deliver up to 1000-1100 pieces on a busy shift by hand and by yourself using a dolly off the back ramp.   Some pieces can weigh up to 60lbs each and are shaped very awkward to deliver quickly.   Delivery locations often have stairs and are difficult to deliver to with very tight delivery times especially restaurants.   Trucks are often loaded very poorly making it difficult keep on schedule because you spend too much time digging and searching for product not loaded on the right skids but its always the drivers fault creating a blame game between driver and warehouse pickers.  Falling behind is a nightmare because customers delivery times are so tight that you have zero room for externals you can't control like weather break downs ect.  Once you fall behind expect to be harassed on your phone by dispatch, customer service, one or two sales reps, sales rep boss and one or two supervisors!    Being new you will be spare board and always running random delivery runs making it difficult to get quick and efficient enough to be kept on permanently.   If you can handle stress are super fit, don't smoke,can drive fast enough to not shift your load you might pass probation.   If you do you will have one of the best paying delivery jobs in the industry if you can handle the pressure.

a typical day at work:
Expect to be carried and/or looked down upon by senior selectors until you manage to prove yourself to the top tier of laborers. There is an inevitable level of toxicity due to the bonus structure; the handful of speed-demon, hard-working, motivated selectors push themselves to the limit every night, ensuring the team is able to leave at a decent time, bearing the literal burden of their new and/or unmotivated counterparts.

what you learned:
Efficiency is everything, inside and outside of work.

management:
Very inadequate, non-understanding HR, focused on politics such as diversity and retention rate rather than filtering the revolving door of employees and keeping the ones that truly care. Day shift managers govern the night crew—without being able to physically be there at the same time, there will always be a disconnect between trust on a personal and professional level, paired with the yes-man type attitude consistent throughout management above supervisors.

workplace culture:
Sometimes toxic & cliquey. Typically everyone has a shared rage toward management and has no problem stating it among peers.

the hardest part of the job:
The job itself. You cannot do it forever. Far from worth spending your time there unless you are able to motivate yourself to make a bonus every week.

the most enjoyable part of the job:
Lots of time to think, listen to music & podcasts. The labourer crew is generally very welcoming and excited to work with new hires, but will expose flaws in coming weeks without holding any words back. Lots of "iron sharpens iron" vibes to the warehouse, especially among order selectors.

This job is good and bad so it depends .

 Here is my honest review 

I feel like sysco isn't the worst place I have ever worked but it sure was the most frustrating place at times . More times then not I will point out.  
 
If you like your fast pace work with some added stressful unrealistic time expectations then this job is for you . You dig through the entire trailer for products for the accounts .The warehouse will stack your first stops under all your last stops . So makes for a very annoying time . You then stack products on hand carts and deliver down a 16 foot heavy ramp into restaurants alot of the time up stairs or down stairs ,over ledges and through annoyingly tight kitchens all while having to run around under the chefs or restaurant staff  who order you to put their food away for them.   And heaven for bit if you even the slightest bit behind ...  an average day your delivering 400- 600 pieces  in the summer time 700-1000 pieces .  

The benifits they offer are sub par compared to a lot of other places I have worked and their hourly starting rate is sad for the amount of work that is expected of you.  Also some of trailers are just junky .... ie: the doors are heavy and get jammed , the Ramps are much the same and sometimes they don't roll or the lifters are shot no matter how many times we report. 

The few things I will say that I really liked are my fellow trucking Co -workers,  some of the customer relationships who understand what you do ,and the amount of trailer experience you get  because this isn't your normal tractor trailer driving job . Lots of tight spaces and learning to jack knife in all kinds of situations.

After working here for over a year the position has deteriorated. 
The position was hired for Nights Full Time 10-12 hours plus overtime 4 days a week. As a full time employee I’m lucky to make 7 hours a shift. If there is a long weekend we are lucky to get 5 hours as Full Time employees. 
Sysco is over hiring too many bodies for a job vacancy this cuts into all full time employees hours at a huge pay loss. 
With huge cut to hours the pay isn’t good as it doesn’t account for now the missing 3-5 hours per shift 4 days a week and all the missing overtime. With todays economy this is not sustainable and no longer a livable wage when stripping my hours by their mass over hiring. 
This is the ONLY location doing this practice as this location does not have a union to protect its workers. 
Injury rates are high as we are pushed to complete high pick rates at all costs. Huge turn over rate of new employees creates a problem with moral. 

There is no room for advancement or job security within the Woodstock location not providing full time employees with enough hours as they flood hire way too many workers. Unable to survive on these huge cut to full time hours forcing me to seek a 2nd job
Until an alternative main employment can be found to resign. 
Had I known this is the financial hardship Sysco would be putting me in I never would have left my other stable job for what I thought was a better paying opportunity here at sysco. 

Some managers are approachable others are volatile. 
Avoid this place at all costs. 
This location needs a huge structure change. 

- Three months of probation and no benefits during that period. Injured? Pay medicine for yourself
- Turnover rate is through the roof (80% of new hires won't stay after three months due to the hard work and lack of support from supervisors)
- Very hard work
- Fast-paced
- They will require you to pick (box-case) at an unbelievable rate
- Body becomes damaged within a few months (muscle damage, back pain, mentality, you name it...)
- You will always always be exhausted (lift hundreds of kinds of boxes and short break time-day)
-About the free food? True, but only the damaged ones are given away for free, sometimes, but not always. Discount food? Not even close
- They will trick you, (The supervisors) give you some fault information (lie) which is never existed
- Night shift, so say goodbye to your home/social life (11~13 hours/shift, if you go home after 10 hours of work, some supervisor will have "a little discussion" with you)
- The money is really good, but your life is really bad
- Benefits...you have to pay for it, not much but not free, at all
- There is no chance of advancement

- The management and the HR are among the worst, have some issues, reported them and nothing has been fixed=>Did nothing and fix nothing

- Don't work in the Freezer otherwise your hand will be frozen-frostbite. They won't give you pair of gloves (they did but not the proper one) and they won't give you the Freezer bonus as they said

-I have a problem with the Freezer bonus, talked to HR and my Supervisor, but they did nothing about it, and they keep refusing and pushing responsibility to another. And I still haven't  received my bonus for over a month or so
