A typical work day will include: whatever your job title/duties are, AND whatever else your direct manager tells you to do outside of the duties you signed a contract for. So yes, you will be expected to do extra work you are not being compensated for.

Each year you will sign an "updated" contract, and you will be given a LAUGHABLE increase in hourly pay. Do not expect each year to get a raise that equals the increase in the cost of living. You could very easily be the BEST agent in your job, and still get a raise of only .25 cents. That doesn't cover a simple cost of living increase, let alone a raise for being an honest hard working employee.

What I learned, you are a contractor. You will be paid hourly but will be treated like a salaried employee. You will probably be expected to use your own devices for work related things, and not be compensated.

You will be told you cannot discuss your contract/hourly rate of pay with other employees, and that it is a offense resulting in termination.

The hardest part of the job is CONSTANTLY fighting for your rights. Day after day, month after month, year after year. You will fight for fair pay, fair hours, compensation for things you do outside of your normal work, using your own devices, everything.

The most enjoyable part of the job, is simply doing it and maintaining a level of excellence.

One more thing about being a contractor for this company. You can and probably will be terminated, for absolutely no reason if the client says so. There is nothing you can do about it, and your manager will smile and wave as you leave. Don't expect to have someone stick up for you.

First of all, TEKsystems got me my first permanent job placement and the experience I got while on the job was great. However, the management is rotten to the core.  I was told by a former worker who passed my information on to them that it was a "den of snakes, but you can get a job!" which I can now say is definitely true. From the recruiters who try to lowball you during interviews, to the managers who know nothing about what you do, lie about your accomplishments, and don't care about what they say about you or to you, TEKsystems management is terrible. Recruiters will try to get you to lower your starting salary before being hired, I would recommend not going for it. A few interactions I had with my manager that shouldn't identify me are, having to tell them what the stat holidays were, and having to fight to get my hours nearly every time. Once TEKsystems realized the stat holidays guaranteed by the government were required to be paid, my manager would make it out to be TEKsystems doing me a favor by paying me. The people you work with are usually the same as you, out to get good experience to get a leg up, and maybe some certifications. For this reason, the work environment is usually pretty good in that respect. TEKsystems claims to support workers getting certifications, but that's only when "the budget allows it" and it never does. I know people who got certifications and still have not been reimbursed for it, despite working several years for the company. If you can ignore the management side of TEKsystems, this is a good company to work for.

People are assigned to different customers’ projects. The projects could be either “managed” or “none managed”. As an employee, I have no choice to work on which project. So some assignments are interesting and challenging, some others are boring. In between the assignments, there are bench times. For some people, the bench time is a chance to learn new technologies. But for many people, the bench time is boring. The professional service department has an architect team, they drive the technical direction on all the projects for customers. They are hired as “last say”. The architects show up as strong technical authorities internally. All the developers have to respect them. However, when they deal with customers, the architects’ ideas or proposals were failing to get contracts more than accepted by customers. So the developers’ bench time got longer and longer. Hope Teksystems professional service team will adjust the way of driving the architecture, so that more customers’ contracts can be located.

Teksystems’ management and IT team are doing excellent job. People will get their paycheck every weekend.

The Montreal office is a development shop, as opposed to the rest of TEKsystems where the company is rather a recruitment firm.

Typical day at work:
One agile team per project (Project Manager, Business Analyst, Architect, Team Lead, Developers & QAs)

What to learn:
* The very knowledgeable lead architect is always striving to better ourselves by spending an hour per week on discussing many technical topics.
* Formations are given to learn about the different phases of an Agile project (inception, sizing, story writing, etc.)

Workplace culture:
People are helping each other out, as much as they can - which is awesome!

All in all, a very good company to work for (again, specific to the Montreal office), however....
The downside: the salary increase does not compete enough with what the market has to offer, and thus TEKsystems has a hard time keeping the good players in.

Since starting at TEKsystems 8 months ago I’ve noticed significant changes is how the company has taken action to make it a more well balanced workplace. Specifically I’ve noticed flexibility for life events to take a priority (appointments, family, personal). Hour core hours have also been tapered back 1.5 everyday with no effect to our salary. When I look at average income in Calgary, my salary is exactly in line. On top of that there is endless opportunity for commission and advancement. Yet at the same time this doesn’t come easy, as 8 months in, I’ll still be at least a few months away from the commission threshold. Although it’s also rewarding to know and see that the harder and more efficient I work, the closer I come to this mark. The culture is great but don’t expect to not be pushed and hit your goals every single week. And it’s exactly this performance culture that keeps me around. No one said it would be easy.

No work life balance, terrible management. They take people who are decent in sales and put them into director level positions, with little to no training on personnel management or leadership and expect them to positively impact your career. Most people who have been with the company for more than 2 yrs are so indoctrinated they expect you to give up all other aspirations for your life and career and just live the Tek Model. The company is designed to take people fresh out of school who have no life experience and shape them into thoughtless sales people so the company can make more money. no outside the box thinking, high pressure sales tactics to under cut consultants, and when they use you up they will spit you out and hire the next generation

In my tenure time at TEKSYSTEM I have faced excellent challenges to my professional life and career and their management were there to assist and support the employees. I have learned so much with the training provided by the client and have strong possibility to improve myself and freedom to take decisions and apply my previous and new knowledge into the work.  The best part was having a strong communication with the company and their expectation. The bad part is the lack of communication between the company and their clients, aligning the expectations. 

I was there for less than a year and ended up having to train 5 people, including my own manager (who never seemed to know what she was doing). The amount of work we're expected to execute is incomparable to the salary + benefits we receive, including the quarterly + geographical bonuses. Very disorganized, confusing and distressing to say the least. Recruiters have even admitted that they don't work as hard as our teams do but yet they get all sorts of great benefits, big bonuses, parties and trips. The OSA's have to plan + organize their own events vs. the recruiters have all expenses paid. Even the current salary was a big push but yet still very low. Truly not worth it.

What is the best part of working at the company?
TEKSystems provides the best advice to excel in the job interviews. They assist in every way possible during the hiring process and even while under contract. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There is not a part of my work that is stressful that is directly connected to TEKSystems.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
TEKSystems acted as an agency to get a contractual job from third parties, TEKSystems did great.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Bearable. Time passes by fast when you enjoy work.

Much like the rest of head hunters in the market for IT related work, TEKsystems normally has contract work, from short term (few months) to long term (yearly). It's a good place to start if you are into contract work. Unfortunately, when my contract came to an end, they were unable to provide me an immediate replacement job. Overall, I was satisfied with their service, I got hands on experience from an Oil and Gas company.
