I really enjoyed my time here. They brought me in at a Jr. level, and pay was reflected in that. However, they soon noticed my potential and moved me up, and my compensation moved up with me, so don't be afraid of an entry level position. That being said, once I reached a level with a poor manager (of which it seems there are a lot) then my career stopped advancing, which ultimately caused me to leave the company as I felt there was no more room to grow.

My fellow workers and my immediate supervisor where wonderful, which is why I was so loyal. I had a feeling of accomplishment and felt I was an important member of a team. I enjoyed the work and felt appreciated within my team.

My biggest criticisms are the Sr. Management. They treat the workers as a necessary inconvenience and are always looking for a way to pay you less. It is always about the stick, and never about the carrot. Their philosophy is to get the best possible results out of cheap employees, and not to pay more for competent ones, or retain the ones already in the company. 

Another criticism is that no manager wants to accept responsibility for expenses. There were multiple instances where we were forced to do something that costs much more than necessary, only because we could then bill it to another department. Plus, there was a year where the Sr. Staff/Board made some bad investments and they put the burden on the employees in the form of clawing back of benefits and a wage freeze.

The good news is the old CEO was terminated as a result of those investments, and the new one seems more accessible and appreciative of the workers. Hopefully that philosophy trickles down to the Sr. Management team.

So my ultimate review is that Telecon was a wonderful company, but unfortunately grew too big too fast and became a bad place to work. However, a new CEO and restructuring looks to be bringing Telecon back to its original glory.

Start the morning by reading the work load in my queue and determining which tickets (ie work request) is overdue and which is urgent or have special request attached to them.

I have learned to read detailed and complicated plans for a variety of sources. I have determined how to trouble shoot and when false readings or poor data is interfering with my work.   

Management is very hands off for those who are experienced, currently I only speak with my supervisor one or twice a week. More often then not it is too confirm suspicions about rogue signals or affirm certain procedures. 

The workplace culture is rather toxic. Individuals work alone  with little or no teamwork or interaction . There is a rather cumbersome bonus procedure which makes some cut corners or do only easy jobs leaving the difficult or large jobs to those employees who are honest.  Also management is re active rather than proactive addresses problems or issues only after several incidents and refusing to listen to advice of their employees.

The hardest part of the job would be a lack or respect from certain contractors. We are one of the most important persons on a construction site but many don't give us the respect we deserve. Some of the more hands on contractors know how difficult our job is and do their best to make our work  easier by making smaller work areas or giving proper notice for the job to be completed


The most enjoyable part of the job is being hands on and the investigation portion that is sometimes required in more complicated tickets. I do enjoy working outdoors for 9 months of the year. I enjoy interaction with a variety of the outside parties, from grunts digging ditches, site supers of multi million dollar companies and   presidents of several medium sized construct companies.

Let me start off by saying the starting hourly pay is nothing to rave about, but that quickly changes. Once you are assigned an area and learn that area well, you will notice a steady increase in pay as you hit units. Nothing comes easy, and you have to be self disciplined during the work day to consistently push yourself to complete more locates to make more money, so essentially, you get what you put into it. If you show up to work everyday and do the bare minimum, you'll make the bare minimum while other locators are making a killing. Management and the supervisors are fantastic, when you do well, you're praised. Union benefits are great, never complain about a union job. 

This is not a job where you can cut corners, doing so will and can get you into a big amount of trouble, not to mention, you're putting peoples lives at risk by not doing your job properly. The lead hands are always there to help. The most annoying part of this job is the contractors who call daily asking for their locates, then you get them done, and they don't do the work for months. You will quickly learn which contractors are the repeat culprits.

If you're thinking of joining Promark Telecon, do so only if you have a great worth ethic, are self disciplined and want to be a part of a major role in the city's construction projects. You work alone, which is why it is important to be self disciplined, and schedule yourself accordingly everyday to maximise your efficiency. You get a company vehicle, computer and mobile phone as well as a gas card. Can't ask for much more.

If you like being treated like a number then this is the place to be. Most work is out of town which requires you to stay in terrible accommodations with your coworkers. Most of whom will be constantly under the influence of drugs and alcohol (including the supervisors in some cases). It is full of nepotism and micromanaging. The project managers have put themselves on pedestals and are ignorant and rude. The supervisors are rarely on site, and when they are, have absolutely no clue or perspective on day to day job duties. They push and create unsafe work environments rather than prioritize safety and planning. Their individual performance bonuses are their only priority. They don't care about quality of work which causes major conflicts with the other respective utility inspectors and with the clients. Upper management as a whole has created a very poor work environment where laborers are the disposable bottom feeders that are constantly cut with no notice. Senior management also requires a group chat amongst low level staff to provide constant updates and play by plays to further micromanage. This is because they can't be bothered to show up to site to see how the jobs progress and the constant challenges and difficulties we face. You will be hassled constantly if they think you aren't meeting their daily goals regardless of the days challenges. 

Do yourself a favor and avoid, unless of course, you are related to anyone in Upper management. You will be given endless opportunities if that is the case. 

I am surprised this company actually getting 3.5 star overall review, as a matter a fact, anything more than 2 star for this company is surprising...i have worked for this company for 3 years and worked very hard for it (constant overtime during the week and Saturdays), I  got my promotion after 1 year of hardworking but even with 25% bump in my pay after promotion it's still terrible compare to what other companies paying for similar jobs. Other than the low pay, management is terrible, indecisive managers causing lots of re-work and wasting lots of time and budget. Most promotions and raises goes to nice talkers and relatives of the manager. This place eventually becoming toxic as everyone at the lunch tables talks about how much they hate this company and how much they hate the management. You are just a tool to the company for them to make money, they don't care about you at all. Turn over rate is ridiculous high in this company and  after leaving this company and move on to competitor companies, I met lots of ex-telecom coworkers and everyone is just happy that we got out! so stay away and run as fast as you can!

In the 3 years that I worked for the company (Expercom/Telecon) I really lost faith in the company as a whole.  Poor management is seen time and time again.  You arrive at your job site and not a single soul was notified well in advance of the job scope. Company hires kids because the wages are so low.  It’s a non-union company in the construction division. They claim to be a union however the company created their own union to have 100% control over everything. Time and time again good workers get shafted and good workers leave.  It’s a good company to learn, gain the experience and hed on your way.  It’s also a good company that hires older boys (55+). They have a huuuge drug problem. Management knows all about it however with wages being so low everything slides.  Workers training certifications also expired. Requested multiple times and department could not locate certifications.  Office staff workers have zero growth and wages are extremely low compared to construction divisions.  They are constantly hiring new people because the company lacks structure, fair wages and growth in all sectors of the company.

Not a healthy work environment at all. Management picks their favorites and gives all the desirable work to them. They do not care about customer service at all. They believe that since this is a "free service" that there is no need to go above and beyond to meet the customers needs or to take the time to follow company SOP's and policies. They have a very much quantity over quality based mentality and regularly pressure employees to take short cuts to increase production. Absolutely no opportunity for advancement. They will tell you that you "make your own schedule" and you can "choose the hours you work" but that is not true at all. Your days are very micromanaged and they expect you to work 12 hour days at least 6 days a week, then at the end of the season with little to no notice lay you off. This job is ok if you just want to work there for a summer but it is definitely not a place to make a career.

My day consists of driving from location to location completing utility locates for various contractors. Some jobs can take 10 minutes and some jobs can take a week.

I'm by myself for the whole day. If there is an issue that I am unable to resolve then I will call someone to help me.

Management is horrible. The office is poorly run. My concerns were constantly ignored. Emails ignored etc.They pick and chose who they oblige. They flip flop on standards. Preferential treatment is given to new employees over people like me who have been with the company for a decade. 

The hardest part of this job is dealing with inept and over zealous contractors. They often ask for more than what they actually need which results in locators having to do way more work than is necessary. Contractors also like to call in gigantic jobs and expect it to be completed in a ridiculously short amount of time. Contractors act as if they are the only people to which we have jobs for. This job is stressful an demanding. This is the reason behind such a high turn over rate.

the most enjoyable part of the job is the ppl you work with. Most people are pretty laid back and everyone gets along in the office in scarborough. The company itself offers absolutely no job security little to no pay raise ex. i worked here for two years and received a .25 cent raise. i kid you not! Management is powerless. they do nothing for the people yet expect you to play as a "team". when i say play as a team i mean do other pals job when they are on vacation, help people out from other offices take on any extra work regardless of how heavy your own workload is and you better do it with a smile or they will call you out! The only people who move up and around in this company i management. every other move within the company is "linear". Linear meaning more work but same pay. This company is ideal for someone about to retire who is not expecting to make money. This company is a revolving door. people get hired today and quit tomorrow because the management do not explain the jobs in the interview correctly, they leave it vague so they can pile work on you.
