Terracon Geotechnique Ltd

I did my Masters in engineering from Canada.. Terracon hires you as technologist but makes to work like a general labourer.
This company is in Civil engineering related services.
While 95% of personnel have nothing to do with civil engineering. No college or university training.
You would find one or two civil engineering technologists and one civil engineer in fort mcmurray office. For lab technicians, high school level 5 is enough, to do, proctor or hydrotest. Even the front desk receptionist is called in on weekends,to do lab tests occasionally.
Quality control persons and persons doing field density tests: Its hard to find civil related training or education. Would find somebody masters in business while others in filling gas at gas station
High school dropouts working as geologists with terracon.
The reason is friend bringing in friends,No matter have or not  education or training in civil engineering.
Terracon has destroyed the civil engineering profession.

-typical day at work, Inspect pile installation, log results, calculate: final torque, instillation depth and helix depth. Give results to Project Engineer, for decision to splice on and drill deeper to achieve desired final torque.
-learned how to work compaction testing machine and became certified to use it
-management very accommodating
-co-workers very knowledgeable, I learned so much from co-workers
-the hardest part of this job was being separated from my family four months at a time (need to be able to commute like 10/10, 14/8, 21/8 ect.
-the most enjoyable part of the job was working with the client Project Engineers and Superintendents and drawing from their vast knowledge

The job has no schedule with both day and night shifts, and between 14-16 hour work days, with commuting included. The price of housing in Fort McMurray is high, which significantly reduces the amount of money earned in a culture-less, boring town, with a rough attitude. 
The job itself is seemingly pointless, you're basically there to just poor acid on limestone and record activities that the drill rigs record themselves. You basically drive around and be completely bored for long shifts and long work lengths (up to 1 month at a time without a day off). 
If you have another other option as a new geologist (although you're not doing geology work as a drill monitor), take it.

The management above was very out of the loop with what was happening on the ground. Direct supervisors and Seniors were extremely helpful, however the lack of respect from the client and operators couple with the constant turnover for the team made the job not exciting with very little room for advancement. If you work with Terracon, do not work with the berm team. They are overworked and underpaid. Choose projects where you will actually get paid the same wage to have a much less stressful day at work.

Have managers that walk in, and walk out at the laboratory and you would be lucky to hear back from them if something ever happened at the laboratory or even onsite. Even the field manager himself is guilty of that. If you ask anything in regards to housekeeping or just in general of the condition of how the equipment was, how vehicles were being treated, the organization of the laboratory itself, any suggestions in regards for "constructive criticism," they will make an appointment saying it is for a "performance review" and end up firing up you. For anyone starting out in the construction, please stay away. You deserve better, honestly.

Supervisors, management is so filled with unqualified individuals micromanaging professionals. Lots of coworker gossips going on. Here they have a beautiful culture of People bring other people down to look good. Management and supervisors encourage this so much. This work place is for a whole bunch of losers, escape while you can. Forthills supervisors and management is a sorry situation. 

I have learned a few things from Terracon. I did not enjoy working with this company although I met many great people. I found that the work place had it's own people and you were either in the group, or out. It made me unhappy and I felt like I did not fit in. The pay was not adequate enough to support 1 person living in Fort McMurray.

On the other side of things I learned a lot about TAC (old data entry payroll system), CDMS, etc. Terracon was my first job related to my accounting course and it really showed me a lot about people and the work force. I believe it was an experience I had to go through to get where I am today.

Terracon is a mid-sized organization that has a longstanding history of successful clients and very highly regarded technical employees. The management is very involved and always strives to create a better work environment for both employees and clients. The culture is family-oriented and actively promotes a work/life balances with various benefits such as flexible work schedules. Many employees have a successful career at Terracon, or some simply enjoy the experience and move onto reputable clients or competitors. Either way, it's good experience, exposure and learning environment.

Long days, good hours until mid October. Many people were terminated for the winter seasons. They keep who they want and can easily dispose of people and recruit more as needed. Some people take the credit for the work being done and favorites are chosen. 
No explanation was given when terminated.
Good overall company if they chose you, they will give you a lot of hours and flexibility. Just beware of certain people who can make your job difficult or take credit for the work you did.

This is a great company to cut your teeth on but don't stay too long.
 Management will promise you shares in the company and not deliver ( the old carpet and stick). If you are offered a position in the office turn it down as you will loose income. Benefits used to be good but now are terrible ( not good for a family ). The company was run terribly as still suffering the effects of embezzlement from a former employee.
