Not very good environment to work in the office. Management is always pointing fingers at someone or a group in the office to blame for problems. They let go of good, decent workers and keep bad project managers who cause the other groups to overrun on hours. Have to fight for your wage, always feel. Like you'll be let go. No flexibility on hours, always last minute travel plans and then they wonder why you are not able to travel because 1 or 2 days notice is not enough to arrange things at home. Promoting people who are not good at managing only because they are in the "old boys club", do not promote on merit. If you're not willing to play politics, you'll probably be let go. Owner was very personable but company was being handed off to younger generation who didn't have the background or merit to be in those positions. 

The engineering teams themselves were very good and easy to work with. Everyone was willing to share information and there was an increase in job tasks and responsibility of your work as you gained experience. Steep learning curve but team was always there to support you.

Great people to work with on the floor but management is incredibly cheap and doesn't care about shop employees. pay is good but you need to fight tooth and nail just to get the tools needed to do your job. Shops are always fighting over equipment cause then won't spent the money to get more even when they are very busy. lots of rentals and the minute they sits for a few seconds they will return them because its to expensive, yet they spend crazy money on unnecessary things.  Management never understands how things are built and what the employees actually do yet makes arbitrary decisions about things they have no understanding of. Will also tell people they have lots of work and they don't need to look for work then layoff half there workforce the next day. No thoughts on future planning just what's happening in that minute and expect you to figure things out. 

5 minutes meeting for planning jobs to do in the beginning of the shift is a good point to let every member of the crew what to do, make them know how important their contribution in order to achieve the goals of team.
I have learn a lots from co-workers. Safety is the first priority at Thermo Design and I still feel thankful to my co-workers for training me how to use tools and equipment safely at workplace including tricks and tips to perform some specific jobs quickly and more efficient. And I love learning from others like this way.
Management is great! They are careful and always try to make sure workers doing jobs safely and happy at every position. In other words, respect, and fairly are the words when I think about Management.

One thing's for certain, at Thermo Design you're not just a number. You're a welder/pipe fitter, foreman, supervisor, engineer, labourer and a detective. You're expected to do everything for pennies on the dollar. As a member of the Vessel QC team, I did the work of at least 2 inspectors. At times overseeing QC and production of 30+ pressure vessels. Thermo Design management seems to enjoy making the same mistakes over and over and wonder why they are making less and less money on projects. They spend thousands of dollars in the long run to save $100 initially. I wouldn't have returned to work here if there was another option.

I was a apprentice at TDE and it was alright, good people but lots of politics, everyone knew everything, and work experience was alright. Being an apprentice all you really do is grind, man watch ( if you have confined space ticket), a few misc jobs, and limited welding. But most of the company is B pressure work but unfortunately i wasn't able to be transferred to structural side of the company. For a B pressure welder or any type journeyman its easier and you get lots of work.

It depends on the company, but with time I'll get used to it.

I enjoy working during the day, I'm always nice to my colleagues, and I finished my day very politely and on a very good note with the boss as well.

My typical day at work would be to copy & release drawings for fabrication. I troubleshooted problems (usually on a daily basis). I proofread documents. I organized & filed daily. I photocopied & scanned documents daily. I hand delivered drawings &/or documents per release log. I also assembled & copied project manuals, as well as archived finished projects. I maintained project document lists.

Management was good and most co-workers were helpful.

I didn't find the job hard, I found it challenging & rewarding.

Typical day consisted of major data entry.

I learnt that it's difficult to to get long time employees to change and comply with QC standards.

My manager was excellent, it was difficult to see the challenges he went through fighting with upper management in order to yet again comply with QC standards that were clearly written.

Coworkers were amazing.

Thermo Design was an excellent place to work. However the work culture has changed after the downturn in the economy in Alberta. It becomes very hard to work in a company where the co-workers would rather work individually then work as a team. I personally have a lot o offer and am willing to pass on my knowledge. however the work culture currently does not encourage that.

Thermo Design is a descent work environment, and a extremly good place to learn and build your career.  Although, there are areas within the company that are unorganized and messy, it is a place for opportunists that have the desire to learn and want to build up their knowledge.  People there are respectful and polite and theres always work for everyone where no one is left standing.
