What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Worked in COVID response, although personally rewarding, was extremely stressful at times with ever changing guidelines and policies coming from the Province. High paced with lots of multitasking, meetings, typing/documenting. Pay could have been  a bit more competitive considering the unique workload of our division.  Other areas of public health  seemed less stressful.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
An Overall great place to work! Mutual respect among the individuals I worked with. Supervisors who at least listened even though many situations were out of their hands to control.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Started at 8:30- AM till 4:30 PM, some times longer if very busy-OT paid.
Office 2 days a week. Otherwise worked from home.
Checked emails on arrival and almost immediately throughout the day-expecting updates, notifications, and correspondence from clients, hospitals partners..etc

Working as a Public Health Nurse with Toronto Public Health was extremely disappointing. Despite the critical role PHNs play in community health, the compensation is among the lowest in Canada for this position, which is particularly discouraging given Toronto’s extremely high cost of living.

The work environment is heavily micromanaged with very little autonomy for experienced nurses. Decisions are made far above the frontline level, and management support is minimal when challenges arise. Instead of feeling trusted as healthcare professionals, staff often feel closely monitored and restricted in how they do their work.

Work-life balance is also a major issue. The expectations and workload can be overwhelming, and the level of administrative oversight makes even routine tasks unnecessarily stressful.

Public health nursing is incredibly important work, but the current structure makes it difficult to feel valued or supported in the role. Retention will likely continue to be a problem unless there are significant improvements in compensation, leadership support, and workplace culture.

I was hired during Covid and loved working here. Other staff and colleagues were great. Majority of management (managers and supervisors) were questionable but front line staff (PHNs) were lovely to work with. Colleagues are very supportive and made work more fun and enjoyable. 

There should be a review of people who are in management/supervisory positions. Majority of the (acting) supervisors who got their positions d/t covid really should not have been supervisors at all. They lacked any supervisory skills - they were unapproachable, micromanaged, talked badly about staff with other staff, purposely not respond to emails, and purposely created drama when they feel like their authority is challenged etc.

I personally like the workplace culture. The day-to-day is generally busy, but with a good amount of down time. It's important not to get caught up in what others are doing or getting away with. Seniority counts for a lot, but if you are determined you can move into better positions, or not!  At the end of the day you get back what you put in. Remember that you work for the public good, which is a pretty great mission statement. If you find an excellent manager, do everything possible to stay on their team.

Self-directed position. Monthly check-in with supervisor and coworkers. Able to schedule own presentations. Supervisor has open-door policy and is open to new ways of completing tasks. Ability to learn new procedures, programs, workshops. Able to attend presentations relevant to my position to better do my duties.

It was exciting and provide opportunities to learn and promote empowerment 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Stress of being laid off because city hardly hire permanent positions .

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It was inclusive and respectful.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Helping people and educating people about their health.

I have had a number of different career opportunities since joining public health in 1988.

I have worked in all programs in the division and have found my learning journey and career development in this organization second to none.

I enjoyed having the support of my colleagues and supervisor. Management made efforts to accomodate any needs. We had excellent training. The hardest part was not knowing if our contracts were being renewed, and not being given much notice before any changes were implemented.

They have tighten up a lot. 
When changes take place they are implemented very quickly. Not much consideration to work/life balance. Morale has decreased over the past few years. 
Perks are being removed one by one.

Very busy and fast paced work environment.  Chronically short staffed.  Little room for movement up to management.  Despite this co-workers and current manager are fantastic.
