Your ability to thrive in your role at LHSC is determined by your management team. The twist is that management is constantly changing (not through leaves or by quitting, but by executives “reshuffling” management teams) - I’ve had 8 different managers over 6 years. Some managers have built a strong relationship with their teams, and others have no idea who the people are that they approve vacation requests for. There is no consistency which makes it difficult to be recognized for your hard and meaningful work as an employee. The people I work either daily are amazing and we support each other through the ups and downs, but I have heard that other programs aren’t as lucky in having supportive coworkers. Employee experience is very program and area dependent. I find across all areas that if you are a contract employee, they will forever keep you as a contract employee and renew your contract annually. Best advice is to only accept a role if you are hired as “permanent” right away. Parking is reasonably priced but there are never any parking spots available if you start work at 9am onwards.

I’ve worked here for almost 10 years, it’s was great at first. I actually enjoyed going to work & had a work family. I was proud to say I worked there. Now the only thing that matters is the almighty dollar. The company is management heavy, continually adding more & more layers of supervisors/managers but stripping staff to bare bones. It is no longer about patient care, it’s basically an assembly line & frontline staff are the robots to shuffle people through. Nurses & PSWs are expected to work anywhere they see fit no matter your qualifications. So long as they can say the unit is staffed. Once their “exemplary standing” was met by Accreditation everything went downhill faster than a meteor falling from outer space. Once Accreditation comes around again they’ll be scrambling to meet the standards of care again. RPNs do practically the same job as RNs for way less, the organization is forcing RNs into supervisory roles against their will or they are told to “move on”. It has become a SUPER TOXIC workplace. I highly advise you look elsewhere for employment. 

Was a decent employer but years of mismanagement and unsteady leadership has created a large deficit. So big that the government has appointed supervision.

The org just went through massive restructure. They have planned for layoffs in 2025. Areas will be expected to absorb workload; leaves of absences will go unfilled; many managers hesitant to even approve overtime.

Non union workers had their pay scales re-examined some with salary reductions (despite the fact they hired many new people and then reduced their pay within 3 months). The staff morale and trust is at an all time low. 

Will take many years to turnaround.

Other job culture issues: higher performers, don't come here! You will be rewarded with more work; higher expectations; and given more complex tasks. The lazier and more incompetent you can be, the better it is.

Come to work half hour to 15 min early and receive verbal, bedside report from off going nurses.  Introduce self to patients and write own name on their care boards at patients bedside. Review mars and then charts. Give medications as prescribed by doctors. Facilitate and advocate for patients regarding ongoing care with other health care team members. Transcribe any doctors orders and enter any information, labs or appointments into Cerner Powerchart. Bath, dress, feed, toilet and transfer patients as needed for appointments and/or  ambulation needs. Transfer and admit patients. Communicate with families members as needed and permitted to develop a good care plan for patient. Document any significant findings and if needed call doctor to report findings. Work with other nurses as a team to assist with any tasks they may need help with. Report off to other nurses when they come onto shift by giving bedside verbal reporting.  

Exciting place to work as security, however, watch your back as everyone wants to improve the ladder, your buddy one day will step on you the next. Corporate policies conflict with each other and will be the detriment to employees, no life work balance, deal with assaults,  and injured or dead and dying people from adults to children with no compassion from Mng. Next call, next call, they say show compassion, empathy, and caring but they do not want that from employess. Politics rule the work place, people who have never done the job dictate how it is supposed to be done without a clue on how to deal with volatile situations. They say think on your feet yet when you do, you're penalized for it. Very toxic work inviroment due to Mng not caring for employees only the bottom dollar and what public perception is. 

I absolutely adored working in this hospital as I am very passionate about healthcare. Having the opportunity to be a part of such a caring team of professionals was one of the greatest experiences of my life. As a housekeeper, my job wasn't always the most glamorous, however, it was unbelievably more respected amongst higher level individuals (such as doctors, nurses, or even PSW's). I was blown away by the atmosphere and professionalism throughout the hospital, and can proudly exclaim that I'm currently enrolled in school to become a Nurse, largely in part because of the inspiration I received through each and every one of the incredible colleagues I met throughout. I am honoured and privileged to be a part of the LHSC family, even if for a moment.

Management was the most stressful they would expect alot from you and give nothing back 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
If you like gossip and backstabbing and we are supposed to be a team but the part time people would do all the work and the full timers did nothing. Overall it is a horrible environment 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I would weigh the patient get them into bed for there dialysis treatment then when they were done I weighed then again and then sterilized the dialysis machine

My typical day at work is arriving 10 minutes early to get the details about the patients and what to look out for. Just try to have a good day with the patient. I know its hard a most of them want to be else where other than the hospital but sometimes its necessary to be there, so I make it as enjoyable as I can. I sometimes play games with the patient and or even just talk with them. The hardest part of my job is seeing someone pass away, but that is life and its going to happen regardless. The most enjoyable part of my job is seeing patients finally get to go home after a long recovery, it makes my job just a little bit better that I know I helped them get to where they are today.

A hospital that has grown too big for its own good. Organization is run from a corporate mindset and the purpose of this healthcare institution feels left behind.

Staff are treated like cogs in the machine and if you try to speak up to bring issues to managements’ attention you will be targeted as a bad fit.

Coworkers were kind and made the position tolerable. Mistreatment and assault of staff by patients will not be addressed by the employer despite a “zero tolerance” policy.

Pay is average as most positions are unionized and thus no different pay wise than any other hospital. Benefits however are poorly implemented with the hospital almost always underpaying requiring a grievance for most claims.
