Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care

I worked as a Nurse within this facility for almost 8 years. While this experience gave me incredible skills when dealing with people suffering from mental illness, it was also poorly managed, dangerous for staff working, EXTREMELY POOR staffing management with bizarre policies put in place preventing staff from trading shifts, booking vacation etc, low count ratios (staff to patients) which were DECIDED by management, heavy workload for Nurses who often had to pick up tasks not completed by the previous shift, or the PCA’s that were too lazy to do things like care, serve meals, etc (not all were lazy, but MANY were). Hiring for contracts and full time positions were often based on seniority and not actual skill or ability to work within a team, so many full time staff were not fit to work in that position, resulting in a toxic work environment, laziness, work not getting completed, patients not getting the right care from the staff, and many other issues. There were so many part time Nursing staff who were incredible workers, that were never given the chance to work full time, and eventually moved on to working in other facilities. Many of these incredible part timers were young, fit and able to actually get through a shift, and many people hired full time based on “seniority” were older, injured, accommodated for something, unable to participate in code responses or 1:1 observations. Still to this day I have permanent chronic pain from multiple injuries sustained from patients due to these poor management decisions listed above. Still to this day I receive weekly chiropractic, massage, and physio for physical injuries sustained while working for this facility.
The management give themselves raises over and over, yet deny the patients and staff constantly. The raises they give themselves yearly could pay for SEVERAL full time nursing positions that are desperately needed, and give much needed raises to current staff members.
They work their loyal staff to death, burn them out, deny them requests or accommodations, or basic changes and improvements that could be made to retain them better. Then they hire 50 inexperienced staff and throw them into the mix, which creates an even further dangerous environment due to their inability to recognize and deal with severely mentally I’ll people.
Working for this facility severely damaged my own mental health, and damaged my physical health and well-being, and it will take a lifetime to repair that damage.

Decent pay, coworkers are hard workers and work as a team

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management -no input accepted from staff for facility improvements, work routine improvements. Lack of flexibility in staffing. Nursing staff are expected to be willing to be available to cover different wards sometimes being moved 3 times in one 12 hr shift. The part time staff are often booked for 4 hour shifts so if ones traveling to work it's not worth it.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It's a pleasant environment to work in, clean and friendly. There's effort put in to encourage staff to be involved in recreational events but when working there's really no time to join. There was financing for education improvements but you have to be full time.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Nursing- part-time - arrive, find a place to store your belongings (coat, purse, lunch) listen to report .. that you can't usually hear. Attend patient area and assist with care. There is a main 'team'  that knows routine and they take lead. Try to have your breaks if you can find one to replace you.
Pharmacy Tech- fulltime- arrive at work with knowing what your position is for the week. Attend position and independently do all qualifying jobs. Bright environment with enough time to social with coworkers. Most all coworkers assist if help is requested. Only work Mon to Fri 830 to430pm.

Constantly under staffed, they do a hiring spree every year, but maybe a third of those new staff stay. There has been a staffing crisis for years. They thought it was due to current staff, so not only did they completely change the schedule for all staff, which in turn created a lot of undue hardship and stress for the current staff, that they changed the schedules twice! 
If part time or casual, you are floated all over the building every 4 hours (if needed) which in turn you never get a break. Some units you don’t even get scheduled breaks or a meal break because they only have a certain amount of staff to have the unit open. 

Benefits are okay. Great in dental and prescriptions. But everything else is not good. 25 dollars per session for chiro, massage, THERAPY. BEING A MENTAL HEALTH HOSPITAL, one would think they would have better pay out for therapy! Because you will need therapy sessions after working there. Many have PTSD due to code whites, the lack of support from management, working in an toxic environment on the units. 

This year nurses week (May 2020) was cancelled due to Covid-19. This is now October 2020, and nothing to state when nurses week will come. Everyone is burnt out. We get emails to say how appreciated they are of all staff. 

Vacation gets denied all the time if there is not enough staff in the building - (the schedule goes out weeks in advance with already staffing holes in it, then add on sick calls - especially in the summer) 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The staff, the management and the work environment support the Nurse and other Health care workers to achieve the overall health benefit to the people supported  and the community in general. The workplace is conducive . excellent and supportive

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
For me as individual, it is my commuting from my home to the location, as I lived 1.5hours from the work environment, and cannot afford to take accommodation elsewhere now, maybe later

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Accommodating and Friendly. The environment encourages diverse group and culture, thus make you to feel at home and part of the institution without prejudice, favoritism or nepotism 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
the typical day at waypoint starts with the individual supported by receiving the report, engaging the people supported(assessment), attend to the pressing needs e.g visit to the hospitals or professional office that will attend to the needs of the people supported and other nursing job

I've moved 'job positions' within Waypoint 3 times in the last year and a half. Applying for permanent positions as a new contract staff is difficult and typically not fruitful. They will hire someone that does not work well with a team or the specific demographic based on seniority instead of proven work skills. HR and management are not helpful nor are they transparent with their staff. The 'Senior Leadership Team' avoids parts of the hospital that many staff work full time in based on biased assumptions regarding the patients. Culture is very toxic, co-workers do not have your back and there are many stories of good workers being let go based on another coworkers word. Majority of staff are burnt out. Hiring process is biased. Union can be helpful at times but only to a point. Many long time staff mention Waypoint has gone downhill since becoming privatized and moving into the new building. The slight saving grace is the rate of pay and some great co-workers and experience for your resume.

I have never worked anywhere that treated their employees as poorly as Waypoint. Management tells everyone that they use no restraints or seclusions. Reality is they are used every day. Patients on Bayview Dual Diagnosis are forced to shower and bath and change in front of each other. No support from management if you are injured by a patient. They will make you believe it was your fault! Coworkers were great but it was not worth putting up with management. Have a complaint or suggestion? They will literally wave resumes in your face telling you to do it or they will replace you. Manager locks diapers, toothpaste, deodorant etc in her office so she can limit use. One night the only diapers were locked in her office! No regard from them for staff OR patient wellbeing. Do not send your loved ones there. And my strong recommendation is to not work there. You are just a number to them.

Waypoint does nothing but destroy your mental health, management on some units are bullies and treat staff horribly! It’s like being in highschool all over again, the drama never stops! Staff go after eachother instead of having each others backs. HR is useless and covers up managers horrible behaviours! Good staff get let go for standing up for themselves and bad staff get to keep their jobs! Union in my opinion is pre much useless when it comes to helping staff with problems you get told to just leave things alone instead of standing up for yourself! Overall if you want to end up having major depression and anxiety waypoint is the place to work. It’s funny as this is a place that’s supposed to help with your mental health and it does nothing but cause your mental health to go down.

Do not work here unless you’re ready to suffer your mental health everyday being treated like garbage.

I was hired as a part-time RN for one of the program, and after my  start date, I had completed a few shifts in my home unit. However, since then, I have been frequently floated to various units.
I have also noticed that staff from other units are working in my home unit on days when I am floated elsewhere. During my interview and in the class orientation, it was not mentioned that I would be floating almost every day and I didn’t get any orientation to other units too . 
I have already informed everyone about my concerns and that I am not comfortable with frequent floating. Instead of addressing my concern, I was told that I cannot refuse work, and the tone felt threatening. This has made the situation even more stressful. It feels as though staff well-being is not being considered or valued.


You want to work at waypoint? Let me give you a run down of what it's like . Your schedule will consist of about 12 hours in a 2 week pay period . That being only weekends that you work.  The work load is so stressful the communication between managers and staff is not even there . You will never receive full time . People have been here for 26 years and are still only getting a maximum of 19 hours. This place is a nightmare to work at. Not to mention your union here does nothing for you even tho your paying 20 bucks a paycheck to them . Being a mental health hospital they create more mental health problems in their staff then any work facility in onatiro .
