Whistler Blackcomb - Vail Resorts

The strangest company I have ever worked for. On one hand, there are great benefits, great coworkers, and the skiing is amazing. On the other hand, the company seems to feel absolutely no responsibility to its employees. It is an unfeeling machine that lubricates its gears with the hopes, dreams, and trust fund money of young foreigners.  The company is a very committed participant in the race to the bottom and getting more from less. The corporate culture is incredibly toxic and there seems to be no desire to develop talent. I've witnessed an unbelievable amount of unethical behaviour. There are lots of fun jobs but buyer beware and don't rely on the company for anything. 

When I came to vail with over 10 years experience in cooking I thought that they hired me with people of equal experience or close to. I was put in the same role as 18 year olds and people over seas with no experience or understanding of what this job should be to them. After trying to show my coworkers how to properly do things I would be told I’m not their boss and to take a hike. After trying
To push quality control and high standards I was disappointed in how much disrespect I got snd I ultimately was fired for doing the right thing. I would never give Vail resorts anything but the truth about how this place truly is to its employees.

Very early starts to the day with possible long days depending on which department you work in. 7 am starting time with a day ending sometimes past 4, with the living expenses you need another job so you either work back-to-back shifts or have a good side gig. Work life balance can be good, though outside of work theres only snow sport activities or drinking on resort. Other options include traveling to Vancouver or another ski resort. 

I would not recommend working in tuning. The manager does not allow sick days or days off, the culture is way too tolerant of these policies and if you work overtime, it's docked onto the next pay check as regular pay. 

Being a lifty was good fun here, my coworkers were awesome, and even my supervisors. Rules are tight (you'll get a written warning for being even 1 minute late), but I see it as somewhat fair when it's explained why. You get to work outside, ski & ride on shift, and talk to lots of people. Only downside is even $20/hour is not enough to get by in this town unless you live in staff accommodation. 

Excellent money. Extremely fast paced and not much of a learning curve, somewhat left to your own devices. Fellow staff are friendly and helpful. Management could see how to better assist employees, but the difficulty there is that they’re always being pulled away to some seemingly unrelated bureaucratic meeting. Overall, hectic but fun and good money.

Best place to work as a Ski Instructor but hard to get noticed unless highly qualifies and say there longer. The best part is there is continued ski training available for all instructors. If there was no work available that day you can get tossed around different departments and can work up to 20 day at a time during busy season. 

WB is a fun workplace, however the salary for the amount of work completed is disproportionate. 

With management staffing numbers being severely cut, you end up doing the work of 3-4 people. 

I was very fortunate that my department has been led by someone who cares for the team and wants to grow their reports. 

Meeting new clients everyday for months and teaching each client in different ways helped me understand that every individual is different and learn in unique ways. Teaching kids and adults from all around the world has expanded my connections and has been a truly rewarding year.

A job at WB for Vail provides a cheap way of doing a ski season, but the management and staff care was poor. Was great fun if you got on with your colleagues, but often felt like a cog in a big corporate machine rather than a valued member of staff.
