A typical day at work is different for every employee in the city, from conveners, to snack-bar staff and maintenance to camp leaders, working for the city encapsulates countless experiences, I have occupied various. In my time working as a summer camp leader my typical day started at 8:30 and ended at 4. In between those hours I would have my schedule prepared for the camp program, take attendance and then start with the first activity. Proceeding through the activities my campers would stop for a lunch break at 11:30, resume following my schedule and then be ready for parent/guardian pick up at 4.The schedules involves various indoor and outdoor organized games and activities developed along High Five guidelines.  

Through experience and application I learned amazing time management and organization skills. Every day we work we are tested on these skills and improve them with practice.

The managers I have had the pleasure of working with always applied a genuine diligence to their job and aspired to set a good example for everyone around them. They apply a kind of authentic kindness to their work relationships that is rare in today's society. It made the coworkers feel like one big family which is essentially the workplace culture; very positive and team oriented. It creates a relaxed feel to the employees. We never feel pressured, however we are always thorough no matter what. We hold ourselves and each other to high standards and always help out if one of us falls behind at the job and needs a hand.

The hardest part of the job at first was customer service but since my first days working for the city I have become accustomed to it. At times interacting with unsatisfied patrons under pressure can be a delicate and unpredictable situation. It takes time to learn how to navigate conversations with an upset person to arrive at a solution while recognizing that the customers is always right and simultaneously upholding our City of Mississauga workplace values. 

The most enjoyable part of the job conversely is also customer service. It gives me a deep sense of fulfillment seeing the faces of my campers in the morning who are excited to start the day with me, the kids who I have helped tie their skates, the customers reactions when I'm able to help them find their way and the guys in the drop ins when we celebrate winning a good game of soccer or basketball. I'm a people person and helping people and seeing it manifest is what I love; this is why customer service is the most enjoyable part of the job and the City of Mississauga is an excellent place to work.

A typical day at work consist of getting to program space and setting everything up (i.e. music, sports equipment). While teaching programs for the city, I have learned a lot about myself and others; how to communicate with others, how to approach different situations and how to use my time wisely.  Management does a good job in providing proper resources to help their employees.  My co-workers are all very fun, social individuals that love to help others in the community.  There isn't really a difficult part in my job other than when teaching my classes and students miss multiple classes or come in late; the classes are only 9 week sessions (once a week) for one hour.  So it get difficult when someone misses a few classes and returns; however I make it work and just be patient and go over all of what we learned that past week. The most enjoyable part of working for the city is seeing returning students joining your classes or camps and having parents compliment your teaching skills; it just shows to me that I am doing things right and leaving a good impression on the students and parents that they continue coming back.

Avoid this place as a 311 rep. The managers have favourtism and their "support team" is useless. You take calls for EVERYTHING in the city, even when you don't take those calls they still want you to search in their KB to help. They pacify the residents, and the residents are rude and demanding and the pay is not worth the amount of work you have to do. They like to say "we are a family", but as soon as you don't "do as you're told" you become a target. The training is horrible and rushed, and there is no need to go in for it as it can be done remotely. They continously add on more to do. There is no room for advancement but they want you to do everything. Your schedule is all over the place betweem 7a-7p. God forbid you are sick or have any form of illness or have to take care of a loved one, they will fire you, they have done it to a few people already. Their policies and procedures make absolutely no sense and it takes 10 steps to do one thing. They monitor 6-7 calls a month and if you're not high 80's or 90 percent, they pull you off the phone to "coach" you. They may seem nice and friendly and try to bring treats, but if you speak up or defend yourself, or say anything about their training or procedures, you become a target and they write you up. Go to another region, you have been warned!

Working for Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The department truly prioritizes teamwork, safety, and community service, creating a supportive and motivated environment for all its members. When you will see their teansit operator position opening, you will be happy to see the salary they offer. Then one day you will get a job. Then you will have to write your life to them. 

Even 10+ years operators don't get good shifts. You feel like you are always at work because of long shifts. Constant forced (they call it built-in) overtime will break your back and affect your health. They don't even have protective doors for protection of their drivers on buses. Buses are very old and seats are garbage and smells pathetic. 

If you get weekends you get long splits so forget the 5 weekdays.  You just go home change, change clothes, sleep and again get back to work in few hours. And if you want weekdays good work forget weekends off. So once you join this company say bye bye to your work life balance and spending time with your friends and family. 

Drivers sometimes work 9 to 10 days at a stretch without a single day off. They say it is okay as 10 days are in two different weeks so it's okay. But they don't realize that it's straight 10 day work. They don't even care about safety of their passengers. Image a very tired driver driving your bus. 

So in a nutshell settle for less salary but stay away from Miway transit operator job. 

Pros:
- there is flexibility in terms of your location, you switch every week with some weeks you will be posted at the same place.
- camp coordinators I found the most helpful as they usually have more direct experience and interest in the job (i.e. student teachers) who are well equipped to help you. 
- there is flexibility where some weeks you are more hands on and 1:1 and other weeks you are floating and more laid back.

Cons:
- the pay is basically minimum wage for the extra support you provide for kids with disabilities feels unfair as it can be very challenging at times.
- expectations are not always clear and confusing (for example, we are not allowed to be hands on and help campers who need changing or the toilet but many cannot do these things on their own and require extra assistance).
- very disorganized and you feel like you’re on your own for the most part (i.e. no one told me where to go on the first day, didn’t get a tour of my location, they intentionally leave critical information out of the rec plan such as diagnoses to not overwhelm you but it does the exact opposite)
- you don’t get much say in where you’re placed and you constantly have to re-introduce yourself to new people

What is the best part of working at the company?
above and beyond for staff support for work life balance. Within Rec and Culture program strong support and leadership at all levels. Possibly one of the best Corporations I have worked for.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
I work in live events, the job is stressful and that is part of providing technical support for live events. However, that being said our team is very proactive and extremely focused on pre-planning. This creates a very smooth running well supported team. Diverse and always with a few teammates there for support

positive, perhaps one of the best teams I have work with in many years

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
no two days are ever the same, off event days are equipment prep or repairs, always some administrative work for pre or post show planning. Day of events can be 13 hours on your feet ensuring an event is executed perfectly and seamlessly

My role focused on the following:

Holding a central role in defining, planning, and leading/managing the short- and long-term Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) expansion plan for multinational companies within a defined market (or set of markets) to ensure FDI targets are met and exceeded.

Develop regional approaches to attract FDI and strategic partnership ventures both locally and abroad. 

Monitor and assess the effectiveness of current marketing plans that directly relate to target markets; prepare status reports and RFI’s for Executive team leaders;

Attract, establish and maintain strong global connections and relationships with international partners including public and private sector organizations, institutions (i.e. Sheridan International Centre) and  service providers;

Plan, implement and execute marketing strategies within budget, timeline and City of Mississauga guidelines.

Provide leadership, guidance and direction to staff; maximizing department performance.

Place full of nepotism. Work hard and you wont get noticed. The only way to get a fulltime job is if you rub elbows with someone higher up in management or with someone in HR. They always have someone lined up already even though you have all the skills and experience if your trying to get fulltime. I tried for 14 years and they could care less. Many operators could care less about thier work and are usually grumpy and horrible to work with once they are Ft trust me. The management only care about themselves and not thier employees and wont give other people the time of day to listen to or someones opinion. Its all smiles on top but when you get in if your lucky enough is lousy and you just feel like transfering to another building if your even able to. Over all if your lucky to get a Ft job your set but in all reality is sucks the life right out of you. Ive seen it and experienced it.

In a typical day in camps, the main priority of the City of Mississauga is to provide their clients with the best experience possible and overcome any obstacles that the client may have in attending programs. The City of Mississauga provides access to several programs that reduce the cost of the public engaging in their program. The goal of camps within the city is to provide a safe and fun environment for children to play. The hardest part of running these programs is that several customers will complain about the program right when it is about to end, instead of immediately, when the staff can adjust the program to meet the clients needs. Overall, the staff within the City of Mississauga are very friendly, outgoing and knowledgeable The best part of this job is when a client comes up to you and acknowledges all the effort you put into making these programs great. It really is appreciated to hear someone say thank you.
