The workplace within Earth and Environment is a very difficult to navigate.  The budgets are super tight, the ora of the departments is low, and people are over worked and extremely underpaid.  You will start around 45k-50k if you’re a geotechnical engineer and get cost of living raises and even less if you’re a geologist or CET.  They have not changed their pay scale in 20-30 years.  There are no raises even though there is a system implemented to give more than cost of living.  They will train you on anything you want but it’s beneficial to get experience and get out.  There are no opportunities for intermediate engineers and no one wants to retire.  There is also ZERO mentorship.  Lastly they don’t want you to move up the ranks because your only value is where you are now.  I should mention this is environmental and geotechnical in Ontario.  Civil engineers in infrastructure start at a much higher wage around 60k-65k right out of university.  

My typical day at work is usually quite steady and systematic. I have learned new information about the engineering industry as well as learned significant marketing techniques. The workplace culture is friendly and very helpful. I feel encouraged and appreciated for all the tasks I perform whether small or great. The hardest part of the job is to keep up to pace when things get extremely fast paced, and to able to retrieve information and materials from technical & engineering staff from different branches due to lack of availability and multiple deadlines. The most enjoyable part of the job is to participate and work towards building and increasing clientele and winning major significant building and engineering projects for the company.

This is a decent place to work if you are just starting out in the industry, if you are hired on as a field technician. You meet a lot of Contractors and get to know what kind of work practices each company undertakes as well as gaining firsthand knowledge of how soils and concrete behave. However you won't get very far staying in the company as the pay is low, hours are either extremely busy or incredibly sparse, expense payments are frequently not payed in time and there's a very prevalent attitude to just pass materials when a piece of equipment fails or if the material is close to passing. Not the worst place you can work, just certainly not the best either.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Non, no carrear development, no pay for rainy or bad weather. No appreciation for good work.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
No work for winter, EI is too little, you have to look for survival jobs which is hardly available after arrival of millions of international students.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
No respect, you do not even get a place to sit.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very hectic, project coordinator will keep you running from one location to another.

Pro's:
-lot's of independence; no time spent in useless meetings etc.
-work on some interesting landmark condo's and buildings in Toronto
-some travel
-easy to get time off in winter
-chill management
-lot's of on-site time means you're always in the midst of the action.

Cons:
-low starting pay with no opportunity for bonuses. Raises barely keep up with inflation.
-Work can be extremely tedious - I'm talking spraying a wall with water for hours on end. Don't use your brain much as a junior.
-testing procedures/equipment provided by the company could use an update - makes life harder for tech's on the field (this is an industry-wide issue though)

Excellent staff to work with and communicate with on a daily place.  Excellent employee benefits.
Work consisted of project review, contract administration, dealing with clients and contractors on a daily basis.
Hardest part of job was not always being able to develop a budget with all the requirements of the client and still main within budget parameters.
Most enjoyable part of job was meeting with and working with the clients to ensure their project is developed as they require and that they are pleased once completed.

Management has poor communication skills; had several misunderstandings.  Didn’t receive proper training on company’s procedures. They expect you to work 10+ hours in the field lifting asphalt, signs and rocks all by your self. Don’t have enough people to do field work and Field technicians won’t work on tough road projects so they expect EITs to do it. If you studied engineering to work long hours lifting heavy stuff on the roads with no clear instructions, go for it.

The team and management have been very welcoming and helpful in teaching me new things

The learning curve and there are slight differences in what people want making it difficult to keep track of.

Can either be working on reports of do various field work. Summer was more field work then winter.
Most enjoyable
Being able to go out and do different things 

exp Services Inc offices are not organized enough. They simply execute the projects in an unorganized fashion. Senior Managers do not engage themselves in the design process or in the construction management process. The higher authority does not care about all these....they just look for revenue generation. Quality work is not being done in exp's offices....just project management.

I have learnt a lot about the Canadian construction/civil engineering background. I have about 5 years plus construction experience from Nepal and was able to compare technologies used in Canada and Nepal. I have been providing technical and operational direction and project management principles to the planning, design and operation of rehabilitative and inspection of projects.
