As with many disability sector jobs, the front line staff are mostly of new immigrant background. Thus, many are unaware of their rights as employees and this makes many staff vulnerable and unable to push back for the work environment they deserve. In the group home where I regularly worked, there was a need for one of the three clients to have a safe room to calm down (in addition to taking a PRN medication) when the client became agitated and aggressive -a safe room was not provided up until the time I left the company and the client's level of aggression progressively worsened over time. Also, the same client and another (2of3 clients in the home) required 2 staff (2:1) support as per their care plans. However, staffing did not reflect this consistently. This meant that frontline staff were exposed to a great deal of stress and unsafe work environments - concerns were brought forward to the housing manager who dismissed it with mediocre solutions and instead blamed staff for being the cause of the unsafe environments. 

My experience here has been one full of learning and growing. It was one of my first jobs in this field. I stayed because of my love for working with people who struggle and are in need. I hustled and had fresh energy. 

*5 months in, I started seeing valuable staff leave because they felt unheard and unaddressed.  
*Management tries to band-aid stab wounds when it comes to resolving problems. 
*Not enough adequate training or training isn't taken seriously, which leads to more mistakes being made by frontline staff.
*Management will attempt to find blame in an incident rather than reparative healing and development, which further fosters a toxic work environment within management and other staff. 
*The solution to soothing an issue is giving the individuals we are working with everything they want rather than true reparative action. 
*Sweep issues under the rug when they become an HR issue. 

I gave it a good shot. Once I got my year in, I was fed up with it. 





Management is terrible, workplace culture is toxic and unfriendly. I have learned lots of new skills in training and I am grateful for that, but due to the high turnover rate and being constantly understaffed, nearly every morning is chaotic and schedules changes constantly which can be frustrating. Do not feel like I can rely on management when it comes to asking for help or communicating concerns. Clients are allowed to disrespect you and your personal belongings and management does nothing about it when brought to their attention. When incidents happen, there is an extreme lack of communication between both staff and management which makes workdays extremely stressful. Do not apply here.

I really enjoyed working at New Age.  Management and staff were all pleasant to work with, there was great communication happening.  They also provided great learning opportunities in conjunction with some of the city colleges, as well as the great in-house training.  Salary and benefits were good.   I found working with aggressive clients a challenge, but still really enjoyed the work.  A typical day included regular meals, engaging the clients in activities they were interested in, taking them for outings in the community, and assisting with personal care where necessary.  Best part of the job was the clients themselves, hardest part was the physicality of working with aggressive persons.

Worst company to work for. Administration and staff are horrible and inhumane

Overwhelming with some staff having a hawkeye on other bc they are treated special

I used to love working for NAS when I first got hired. My opinion of NAS went downhill during an abrupt change in management. I've never had an issue with any of my co-workers, just with management. They say that they're here for you and they care when they really don't. The only thing that's important to them is covering their butts. Save your energy, and work for an agency that has good management.

I've been with NAS for 3 years + with the same salary. There are no raises, they don't pay overtime (because they DON'T like staff working more than 12 hrs/ day). Took client camping for 72 hours and NAS refused to pay O/T. I only got pay 36 hrs. I've asked for evening shifts and be off Awake Overnights, talked with managers and got some reassurance. But when it comes to push and shove, it NEVER happened. Bonus are BAD. Last year, only got $450 for bonus. That's ONLY 2 days of work in bonuses. NOT A GOOD PLACE TO WORK! There are other better Support homes to work at.

Management is horrible, no room to move up in company unless you are friends of management. They are not inclusive at all. They do not treat anyone fairly, extremely stressful work environment. You get physically assaulted by clients and they do nothing about it. Staff sit on their phones all day and do not take care of clients needs, again nothing done about it. They have a very high turnaround rate. No one is happy working there. Staff are constantly backstabbing you and complaining about everything. 

NAS walks the walk and works hard to provide the very best care for their clients, and to provide support and trainings for their staff. They are somewhat limited in what they can offer financially as their funding comes from government but they have shown how they are working on petitioning for change. I feel valued and appreciated in the work I do. They work with team members to treat you as an individual and are mindful of work life balance and burnout.
