A Toxic Work Environment That Drains You

If you’re considering working at VPI Employment Services, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. This place has one of the worst workplace cultures I have ever experienced—rife with office politics, favoritism, and a complete lack of respect for employees.

Toxic Culture & Office Politics
From day one, it’s clear that success here isn’t based on hard work or merit but rather on who you know and who you please. Favoritism runs rampant, and management plays power games rather than supporting employees. If you dare to speak up or question anything, you instantly become a target. Gossip and backstabbing are part of daily life, making it a stressful and demoralizing place to work.

Low Pay, High Expectations
For the amount of work they expect from you, the pay is embarrassingly low. They squeeze every bit of effort from employees while offering minimal raises and zero real incentives. You are expected to work beyond your hours, take on extra responsibilities with no additional pay, and act grateful for it.

Zero Work-Life Balance
Forget about work-life balance—it doesn’t exist here. You’re expected to be available at all hours, and overtime is practically forced without extra compensation. The workload is unbearable, yet management constantly pushes for more. Burnout is inevitable, and the company’s attitude is simply, “If you don’t like it, leave.”

Employees Are Treated Like Machines
Management treats employees like disposable machines rather than real people. There is no appreciation, no genuine support, and certainly no career growth. The toxic environment leads to high turnover, but rather than addressing the issues, they just replace people and repeat the cycle.

Final Thoughts
If you care about your mental health, career growth, or having a decent work-life balance, VPI Employment Services is NOT the place for you. The only thing you’ll gain here is stress, frustration, and regret. Avoid at all costs.

Meet with new clients, assess their career, goals and what needs to happen to meet those goals. You then follow up with them and assist until the goals are met or they change. Fully funded through Employment Ontario so ever is free to clients. You refer to other Community Partners when needed and support the client to meet their employment or education goal. Provide constant support and coaching. Management is supportive, work as team to assist co-workers and brainstorm on how to help clients who may be struggling. Unfortunately most clients lack motivation and a lot of days feels like your babysitting adults who can’t be bothered to even try to do things for themselves, are only participating because Ontario works, ODSP or WSIB is requiring them to. Some clients do nothing themselves and expect everything done right away for them as if they are priority to other clients on case load. Anywhere from 40+ on caseload at a time. No remote or hybrid option available :( which is disappointing since many other companies have this option post Covid-19. Branch Manager and Team Lead very supportive and understanding. Team training as well as other learning opportunities available. Some clients you feel like your their counsellor, some struggle with disabilities or addiction, homelessness etc. We assist in breaking down barriers to gain successful employment. 

A typical day at work was quite routine and very target-driven. While this provided structure, it often left little room for creativity or balance.

I did learn a few things about perseverance and meeting expectations under pressure, but opportunities for real growth and development felt limited.

There was one manager who was truly authentic and supportive, which was a highlight. Unfortunately, the rest of the management team did not consistently provide the same level of guidance or encouragement.

The workplace culture was heavily focused on numbers and results, which sometimes made it difficult to feel a sense of team spirit or shared purpose. Support, training, and benefits were not as strong as they could have been, and the overall environment felt below expectations.

The hardest part of the job was trying to meet ambitious targets with limited support. The most enjoyable part was the rare moments of authentic leadership, which showed what the workplace could have been with stronger investment in people.

Overall, this experience made me realize how important culture, fair compensation, support, and training are for long-term career growth. I would suggest considering these factors carefully before joining.

You have the ability to serve people within the communities. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The staff is not bad but upper management is always micro-managing and giving a lot of work to people in the offices. They give you double the work for the same pay and when you tell them to hire more people to help you they don't do it. They stress out the staff and pay lower than other companies paying salaries and making you have work that requires you to be working after your work hours. Not a good place to work anymore.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You start working at 8:30 am and usually have meetings right away first thing in the morning or right at 9 am. Staff will call you to do some tasks for helping them and you have to drop what you are supposed to do and then do what they want you to do. You have different people telling you what to do at different times and they do require you to have multiple deadlines with little to no flexibility.

This job is constantly like treading water. You never know when you will be yanked down by the micromanagement, the toxic work culture or the "this is how it's always been done" mindset.

The executives are so removed from reality that they don't even realize how underpaid their employees are, what services they are supposed to provide, how toxic their culture is or how employees are supposed to accomplish anything with integrity.

There are so many negative reviews, but all that anyone says about them is that it's disgruntled employees that have been let go. They say people leave because of low salary or competitive targets. 

People leave because VPI is a business in a sea of non-profit companies, and they run it like so. This place is supposed to be about helping people, but the executives just use VPI and their government contracts to stand on the backs of the people that they are supposed to support.

This is the most toxic place I have ever worked in, and the heartbreaking thing is that nobody wants to listen.

The expectations of one individual are ridiculous! How can one benefit from less than 15 minutes a week? That 15-minute window includes any paperwork, research, and taking case notes! 

Harassing people is an expectation; if they no longer want to work with you, to bad; schedule them to be harassed once again in a few weeks. Don't exit someone until they have a job, even if you didn't help them at all... push it through!! 

This organization has no care for the individuals it serves, its all about that goal number (thats unrealisticly high)

They offer great vacation and other days paid off but god forbid you actually use them, unless they force you to that is. 

Your opinions, suggestions, and ideas arent to be spoken and if shared, management takes it as their own. 

Their training is a joke but no worries because as soon as you catch on, everything will change and dont mess up!

Terrible place to work, very high stress  unstable job!! 

What is the best part of working at the company?
There is absolutely nothing positive to experience working at VPI.  The extreme turn over supports this.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The company operates at 30 - 40%  staffing capacity.  Training is non-existent.  Executives are pitted against each other, which is a toxic environment for front-line staff.  Horrible, degrading atmosphere.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
TOXIC doesn't begin to describe the culture.  Damaging and dangerous is more accurate.  Staff try to do their best for clients, but they do not have the tools to succeed.  Consistently set up for failure.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Stressful, micro-managed, degraded, bullied, intimidation, mind games all this before you finish your morning coffee.

Senior management has zero clue what they're doing, no direction no vision no strategy. Jan changes her mind every week and everyone is expected to "adjust" right away. Such a toxic environment and if you bring something to senior managements attention, they will take it personal and reprimand you for complaining. This place is full of problems and no solutions. Everyone is confused and no one in senior management cares. They beat around the bush with a lot of keywords but never answer any questions. They're so clueless.

I feel bad for the clients and employers VPI works with. So much confusion. And a lot of juniors are amazing people, but they're treated so horribly. Such a waste of talent. 


"Very structured" implies a rigid and inflexible environment, lacking in adaptability or creativity. Such an organization may prioritize conformity over innovation, stifling individuality and initiative. Employees might feel constrained by strict rules and procedures, limiting their ability to think outside the box or pursue novel solutions. Overall, it's not the kind of company that fosters a dynamic and inspiring work culture, nor one that encourages personal growth and fulfillment. Working there might not be a source of pride or satisfaction, as it may not align with one's values or aspirations.

Great co workers but management was disrespectful
