Family Oriented, Harsh Environment, Outdated Management, Cost Cutting
While I'd love to say this place is great it's far from that. The opportunities to learn as a technology/engineering person are significant and if your in "the group" you'll advance. Also, if you tow the company line then you should also do well. Operations makes good money but it's a very harsh environment and shift work. Maintenance makes good money too but again it is a harsh environment
Negatives - There is not enough money to sustain this business - for instance you have to take you're own garbage out and the cleaning services are atrocious. Get ready to mop your own floors and sit on dirty toilets. While they rake in 100's of millions in profits they continuously cut back on benefits, training and pay. Wage increases are below real inflation rates. Perks - what's that. Need a pair of safety boots - please bring me your shoes so I can measure the tread depth. Training - sorry no external training this year, or last. New uniforms - no way; there's cutbacks so we're actually taking some away. Also, welcome back to the 70's way of thinking. Management is trying but suffers from severe disorganization. They are trying however. This is a dying industry. Don't be fooled. It will be under severe pressure for many years and the new owners are making sure they get every last cent. Even if it means the little guy loses. It's toxic - literally.
Positives - The old management team actually cares about the employees. They're trying to stay family oriented.

Horrible
Was hired for a specific role in the IT department but the “specialist” whom I was hired to help didn’t want to train. I sat there for over a year doing pretty much nothing. I would ask to help/work so much the manager told me to stop asking. The group and manager I worked with were highly unprofessional to the point that it was abusive. Team members would yell and walk out of team meetings almost every week. They would trash talk each other behind backs.
A common occurrence would be that I was told wrong information by senior team members (absolutely clueless old guys who literally made up nonsense when they didn’t know what they were talking about) then the same guys would complain about you. Even worse if you actually fixed an issue after you were told bogus information they would complain about you.
Same old guys would chat it up all day either on the phone with personal calls or in person with other co-workers, but if you make one phone call to your doctors office they complain about you making personal calls.
Management didn’t care about anything going on as they were retiring in less than a year. New tech-leader in training was one of the most miserable human beings on earth who would regularly trash talk his own family and children, the job, and co-workers.
My predecessor left this position because of the same issues. They would constantly trash talk him.
My father died during my employment here, they would literally make jokes about it. I

Production Worker (Former Employee) – Hamilton, ON
I worked for this employer for over 20 years and hated it.
I left because I foresaw the wage and benefit cuts and was fed up with the politics.
The work schedule is 12 continental and wears on a person very quickly.
I walked out the door with over 20 years of experience. My supervisors all had far less seniority and experience than I did but were promoted because they were friends of management.
The training program was never that good but has been affected even further by the drain of experienced personnel-myself included.
This employer has a middle management problem. Middle managers/supervisors are often small minded, vindictive and insecure. HR at DOFASCO often looks the other way while supervisors "sewer" the careers of employees they don't like.
I saw more people forced out the door or reprimanded into discouraged silence by small minded, vindictive supervisors while HR looked the other way.
Due to the fact that there is no union, employees have no real recourse or protection from these types of practices.
I would strongly recommend against even taking a short term position with this employer.

Conssmall minded and vindictive management team/HR department that looks the other way
They don't practice what they preach. Very clique-y. Many supervisors don't have any experience in their departments about the jobs they except what they know on paper. Getting written up is like national past-time there. Sign up for o/t wrong, take initiative to display your skills, not wear your safety and high vis even in the parking lot = written up. They fire people for no reason. They want sheep. Not smart people. Sad when they promote a known crack user and a former Circus Clown to Team Leader! If you work too hard your co-workers will threaten you and the company does nothing about them especially if they are senior employees. They encourage employees to "rat" on one another 2x every month. If all this honesty was in their job ad I wouldn't have applied. BTW: if you make a mistake you risk getting demoted to another on-site company (same work) that pays $7 less/hr for months!

Good blue collar job but not a dream job for a software developer
Responsible for and completed several total code conversion and redesign projects for steel mill automation and tracking software from Visual Basic to C# or ASP.NET, connected to Oracle SQL Database.
Identified and corrected existing problems in legacy software as well as providing bug and development support for automation software as well as software deployment code running in Excel and VB.
Also designed and deployed an updated Help system for automation software, migrating from Windows Help to a web based wiki.
The people were mostly friendly and the atmosphere felt like an old school union shop, but management was unwilling or unable to keep up with new technology. The software had a feeling of 'don't touch it as long as it keeps working', which is the opposite mentality to modern software development and the technical debt was immeasurably huge. Also, the physical work environment of the Hot Mill was distracting.
You'll get out what you put into this place. It's a career for people who want to make lots of money with great Healthcare and a nice retirement. Since 2016 I've made over $90,000 three different times (and never less than $75,000). This year will be around $115,000 due to increased pay from our contract and profit sharing checks. 6 figures will be the norm for me now that I'm at almost $27/hour in production.

Mondays we offer classes to Grade 12 learners from 8am until 2pm.
Tuesdays we conduct outreach at township schools teaching syllabus to Grade 10 learners as well as offering mentoring to teachers in need of assistance.
Wednesdays and Thursdays we offer classes to Grade 11 learners from the township at our science centre.
Fridays its out to the township again conducting outreach to grade 10 schools and teacher mentoring offered as well.
From 2pm until 4pm we plan and create support material which we use a tool to implementation our program in our respective subjects .
We create a positive classroom culture, one that is conducive to learning an teaching. Discipline problems are not an issue since learners are aware of the incentive (bursaries) offered by ArcelorMittal at the end of grade 12.
Learners are exposed to the best resources and fully functional laboratories which are not available at their schools. We bring the lessons to life and ensure lifelong learning occurs. Most enjoyable part is being able to use my vibrancy and dramatic approach to teaching in fun and exciting ways, hence "edutainer", I educate and entertain at the same time and that approach guarantees a remarkable positive impact on the learner's overall academic achievement in my subject Biology!
Hardest part is.. due to budget constraints, we have to take our teaching to the township schools where the learning and teaching does not prove to be as successful and as effective as it would have

I work hardest when under pressure, I love my work, I love my line of work. What I do not like is the feeling you get when you enter the workplace. It used to be so light, full of laughter, enjoyable. Now, you need to watch what you say, everything you say is taken personally. The co-workers cant wait to see who have the first piece of new news, and no one is doing the work. I love to work on end and lose myself in my work not saying a word for hour sometimes, resulting people start talking asking whats wrong. This becoming an issue, for days, just because I did not talk for one part of the day, this is immature, we have to work, work is getting more and more, people is doing less and less. The manager is actually helping the co-worker with his work, him doing nothing, I don't complaint at all but with me having the bigger department, keep it in mind if I don't get through my work. The hardest part of my job, this is keeping a happy face at this time, while I enjoy my work, in an unfair environment where I cannot discuss it with my senior without having trouble for myself afterwards.
The most enjoyable part of the day must be the part where I can close my mind, lock out the problems and start on the work I have set out for the day, and help the people that contact me. End of the day knowing that I have done what I wanted to even though I had to work overtime to do so, or even have the answers to that I did not have earlier the day to complete the tasks I had stru

Overall my experience with ArcelorMittal was okay. There is something new everyday. Depending on where you work you will be expected to work at least 45 hours a week, not including outages which are generally 2 times a year where you will put in 12-16 hours everyday for at least 1-4 weeks depending on projects. You will not get overtime until at least 50 hours and even then it is only straight pay. Though the salary is competitive but it losses value in working crazy overtime hours. I saw over 95 hours a week my last outage for 1 month. To me losing 40 hours of pay for that whole month is very unappealing. Recently they have leaned toward gathering new talent by trying to sweeten the deal for the younger crowd with more raises and longer vacations. Though you will always be on call and you should be expected to be called on vacation. The job is pretty much secure as long as you do not cause harm to anyone. They will also help you move to different positions if you want assuming you work there long enough and show enough passion. They also will take care of their own if anything ever goes downhill and are forced to close a plant or line. Management is okay but there is a lot of inexperienced people since it is very hard to find specific people that are qualified for certain positions. Engineers are forced to be supervisors. Young engineers, like myself, are not in best position since they do not know as much both in the field, and how to deal with 50 year olds who act like chi

Great paying job with Awesome benefits! It’s 7 days a week but it was clearly explained in my interview if you didn’t want 7 days a week all year ,every year ,you shouldn’t take the job offer! Health insurance is outstanding and cheap compared to past employers . Union stands up for fair treatment but doesn’t support lazy people which is a plus in my opinion. I can’t speak for other departments managers but I couldn’t ask for a better manager. I plan to retire from here. I don’t have a lot of family time but I can definitely provide an Awsome life for them , and the time I do get to spend with them is that much more precious and valuable because it doesn’t happen often. A lot of people that complain here obviously has never had a hard job in there life or they wouldn’t be complaining. But I will agree with statements saying being bounced from shift to shift weekly and department to department weekly really sucks and should be evaluated and fixed! And I also feel there could be a rotation offering people who would like a weekend off a month or so an opportunity to do so and people who wish not to have a weekend off could sign up for other jobs , or something to that effect . All in all I wish I would have started here much sooner, not many places offer a pension anymore and the 401k match is nice . I work a lot but my wife and kids are living more than very comfortable and get to enjoy life and that’s all that matters to me personally. If they are happy I’m happy . This job c
