ABC Recycling Ltd.

I am proud to say I work for ABC Recycling in the role of Commercial Buyer for Vancouver Island BC.  I was hired from the same industry and it was a huge advancement in my career. I am very thankful to the team at ABC for giving me the chance to prove myself and join the family. In this role I am currently responsible for meeting customers, developing new business, and most importantly cultivating meaningful relationships with our customers and community. 

The office environment is very comfortable and welcoming.   I was quickly provided with all the tools I needed to succeed. The company also offers paid volunteer programs to help increase community involvement. So many of us would like to volunteer but for many employees it is hard to lose a couple day’s pay. This policy really helps relive that stress and lets everyone be more giving in their personal and professional life.

Two days after I was hired, I attended several training and strategy meetings.  These were key to getting settled and learning something about each member of the team. The culture in this company is one of deep connections, friendships and caring. From the yard guys to the management everyone works together and is happy to know you. There is a serious and pervasive air of camaraderie that is sorely missing in so much of the business world today. Nobody at ABC Recycling is a number. Everyone has a name tag because they value you as a person. How many CEOs know the names of all their employees? 

If I had to pick three words to describe ABC it would be: Honesty, Empathy, and Honor. 

Having only been with the company a short time, I was and continue to be amazed by the welcoming and open nature of everyone who works here. The CEO of this massive company is a true gentleman and down to earth in every sense of the phrase. The Yochlowitz family grew this business from a single horse and buggy in 1912 to a 9 yard Organization with world wide presence and connections today. 108 years in the family is not something often seen these days and you can really feel it when you are part of this family. 

ABC has very aggressively combatted the threat of Covid by providing ample control measures, and more importantly helping any employees when they are sick. Everyone is supported and taken care of so that they do not have to also worry about bills and tasks piling up. 

In closing, I would say that I have never been prouder to work for a company, except perhaps my own family’s business. Family is so important, especially in the day and age where we are so separated and fractured as a larger community. It is very comforting to know you belong to an organization who genuinely cares for you and your future.  Thank you again for everything.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The best part of working at ABC Recycling is the genuine and authentic culture throughout the company. There is a strong sense of teamwork and mutual respect between employees and leadership, which creates an environment where people feel valued and supported. Everyone is encouraged to contribute, grow, and continuously improve, both individually and as a team. It’s clear that the company cares about its employees and is committed to building a workplace focused on development, collaboration, and shared success. That positive atmosphere makes it a rewarding place to work and motivates people to take pride in what they do.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
There is nothing particularly stressful that stands out. While each day can bring new challenges and unexpected situations, the supportive team environment and strong communication help make those challenges manageable. The variety in daily work keeps the job engaging, and employees are given the tools and support needed to adapt and succeed.

Overall, ABC Recycling Ltd. is a good place to work. In my position, communication is most important as I work directly with the public. I learn on a daily basis how varying other's experiences and expectations are. I roll the best I can with positivity and helping to meet customer needs. The hardest part of my job is dealing with condescending and/or impatient individuals. I have however, with time and life experience, become more skilled at redirecting focus. My personal belief is that our workplace culture could always be improved - the way in which we speak to each other (just being more kind), and by actively helping and working in a solution instead of getting caught up in the problem. With that said, we always come together and get the job done. The most enjoyable part of my job is the basic human interactions I have with both the customers and my coworkers. I enjoy helping guide customers with recycling their scrap metal, as well as just socializing in the process as I believe this is essential for a part of our wellbeing as humans.

I enjoy working at ABC Recycling because there is a sense of excitement about the future and where this company is going. Since I began here at ABC I have always felt appreciated for my contribution to this company. We work hard but there is a lot of camaraderie at the same time.  When I make suggestions, they are taken seriously because it's a team mentality. I have found the company to be supportive of work/life balance which is important to me personally. I am learning new skills all the time which keeps the job fresh. If you want to be a part of something that's growing and yet has that family run feel then this is the place for you!

I’ve been with ABC Recycling for over three years and have had a fantastic experience. I started as a Equipment Operator  and was promoted to Operations manager, thanks to the company’s commitment to employee development and growth. The leadership team is exceptional, providing clear guidance and support. Overall, I truly enjoy working here and highly recommend ABC Recycling to anyone looking for a rewarding career.

Family owned and operated business with great values have recently gone awry.  Once a great workplace, with stress free and often fun days are no longer. Management’s focus on squeezing every last ounce out of personnel and equipment has lead to fatigue, division and stress.
The equipment and trucks are dilapidated and unsafe to operate, which only adds to the lack of morale. 
Management is blinded by production and quota over safety and mental health. 
Being home every night and a decent wage is the only driver bringing employees back each day. (Opinion)

A typical day is wake up go to work morning meeting work have some lunch and giver the rest of the day

I have learned how to move rail cars safely and operate different machines safely 

Management is good always support everyone 

The culture is great and always open to new things 

The hardest part to me would be going home
At the end of the day the job always has things to do.

ABC Recycling is overall a fantastic company to work for. This a Canadian owned family business of over 100 years and I have been very happy here in my time. ABC takes its safety and environmental awareness as the most important objectives and cares deeply about their community by giving back as much as possible. The company culture is strong as every level of leadership from the owners on down is always available to help and provide support. Overall there is just really good people working here and working hard together.

A typical day for me is driving to jobs around town getting bins you can always learn new things if you just pay attention to your surroundings  my management team is one of the best I've ever worked with great people they trully care about their team every one on my team get along fine great bunch of people the hardest part of my job is getting into the bins and putting  up with the traffic on the roads I love driving so that's the best part of my day

I have now worked at ABC Recycling in Kelowna for just under 4 years.  This family owned and operated company is one of the best companies I have ever worked for.  They are involved with the communities they have yards in as well have an amazing culture from the ownership right down to general labourers.  110 years in the business and still growing and expanding
