Voice recognition does most of the work and the medical language specialist proofreads and edits reports as required. Very little actual transcription required anymore.

Typical day at work is sitting down in front of my computer at home and reading, editing medical reports produced by the company's software, and processing them back to the company. Occasionally I get to actually transcribe a report from scratch.

I am learning lots of medical terms and information.

Supervisor/mentor is available by email or telephone, usually is not in the same city, at least if you live in a different province from Ontario.

No coworkers to speak of; our identities are confidential from each other.

The hardest part is it can be boring, and the routine can put me to sleep if I am not motivated.  The doctors' different styles of dictating can be frustrating until I get used to them and even after.  There are no benefits, no medical, no holiday pay. I am paid for the work I produce so if I am having an off day or have business to attend to, it shows on payday.  Editing and proofreading pays very little, at least with Nuance/Accentus.

The best part is setting my own hours, no commute to work, no annoying coworkers to bother me, going for a walk or taking a break when I need to, though I have to be careful not to take too long. I claim part of my house, some bills like power, Internet on taxes as if it were an office, which it is for me.

I really enjoyed working for this company and the type of work it encompassed.  I also enjoyed the flexibility of being able to work from home.  My account included multiple specialties, which contributed extensively to my knowledge base over the years. 

There were times when I felt frustrated with technical issues and lack of timely IT contact/intervention;  however, that seemed to improve over time. 

The hardest part of the job was dealing with the steadily decreasing salary for the same work, which had gotten to the point where I could no longer subsist on that wage and had to seek employment elsewhere. 

The most enjoyable part of my job was being able to control my work environment (temperature, sound, interruptions) while working from home in order to apply myself 100% to the production of quality reports, never losing sight of the fact that it impacted a patient's care.

I enjoyed working as an independent subcontractor through Accentus Inc.  I love medical transcription, so it was a perfect match for me.  I was also thrilled to regularly meet their 99% accuracy requirement.  

The technical staff were very helpful, making getting started a breeze.  My team lead was very friendly and helpful as well.  

Home-based medical transcription requires much discipline, as well as a work environment void of interruptions.  It was immensely rewarding work.  However, after having performed the same functions in hospital settings, I greatly missed an hourly wage.  

I would recommend Accentus Inc. to all experienced MTs seeking a satisfying challenge.  I found this company to be honest.  I felt that they respected their contractors.

The pay was the worst - not enough for what was involved. My co-workers were great to work with - had a lot of fun. A typical day at work was taking medical files out of boxes and preparing them for scanning by removing all staples, paperclips, as well as re-positioning any sticky notes that may be covering information, then re-boxing the files to be taken for scanning. The last 3 months I was redacting the 407 highway toll information that was already scanned in, by blacking out all credit card information that was on the forms.

Worked for this company for 6 years.  In the beginning it was an awesome company to work for. In the last year or two, the company has gone through major changes and is now one of the worst places to work for.  Pay has been slashed terribly while quantity expectation has risen.  Bonuses have been taken away and they hound you nonstop to be constantly working. Do not apply here.

Completes production activities in accordance with departmental policies, procedures and standards to achieve production deadlines and desired quality levels. Cross trained in the production area in various job tasks include document preparation, scanning and indexing health record documentation. Learned how to be more flexible and reliable.

At the time that I was employed with this company, I was also caring for my elderly mother who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and I found the work/life balance difficult. The transcription platform was not user friendly.  I didn't enjoy this contract as my manager did not understand that caring for an Alzheimer's is very difficult, and there was no compassion.

This was an interesting position. It was hard being in front of a computer screen for 8 hours and there was some monotony. However being able to utilize my medical terminology background was interesting. High document turnover rate made it challenging made a couple of friends. Overall can just say interesting.

Not too helpful if sick.. cannot get leave if absence.   at first The pay was amazing and you could get leave of absence if going through major surgery.   NOT ANYMORE.  PAY CUT IN HALF.

Exceptional operation with excellent staff. The facility became an efficient operation at the end of it's life cycle. The organization was procured by a major company from the USA who did not require the scanning operations center as part of their business unit.
