A good place to work. People onboard their ships are highly trained and are proud this giving their %100 at all times. Safety is also a big concern and all employees get ongoing training about that making it a very safe place to work and where security first is observed by all crew members.
Some captains though, just like management, need to try harder to address concerns that are brought up by the crew, excluding safety concerns which like I said are promptly looked at by the offices and captains. But there are some instances where they need to be more attentive at whatever concerns their officers bring to their attention instead of dismissing them like they seem to do more often than not without taking the time to reflect on them or to have a conversation about them.
The pay is inadequate considering the amount of work and responsibility as well as the huge personal sacrifices required of the crew having to be away from home months at a time. That being said the crew are.all represented by different unions and the blame could be shared when it comes to the pay.
Anyway this is how it was 10 years ago. I hope things have gotten better since there is always room to improve no matter the company.

I worked on cement carriers as a relief wheelsman for the 2020 season. I enjoyed the crew and 2 vessels I was fortunate enough to work on. The pay is probably the best your going to get as a new wheelsman/deckhand. The crew were very welcoming and didn't mind showing you how to do job specific tasks if I was unsure. Full time crew either work a 6 weeks on 6 weeks off rotation or 3 months on and 1 off (with winters off). I'd definitely recommend working for this company. 

Algoma is a well known corporation, the Captains, and crews and the engagement initiatives were great. If you are looking for something with work-life balance, this industry is not it, many positions require for you to be available by phone at all hours as the vessels are an 24/hr operation in high pressure situations. Was not a perfect fit for me, but I would recommend discussing what the work life balance is for the position you are interviewing for.

On any given day @ sea I'm required to multitask, it could be loading in port, chairing safety meetings, inspection of lifeboats, training new employees , you are constantly learning , whether it be navigating, investigating occurences onboard, learning new software.My co-workers are very important on this job, I want to make sure they know as much about their duties and responsibilities as I do.Being away from my family is probably the hardest part of this job. The most enjoyable is being rewarded for doing a good job.

Like other Marine job every day work is same. I have worked in many countries in the world like Japan, U.K, Singapore, Bangladesh, USA but after I have joined Algoma Central Corp., Canada I found it is the best company at that time. I have enjoyed about 23 years with Algoma before I retired in 2019. As a part of management team they value their employee. Safety culture was their main priority. We worked as a family & a team with office.  Their pay & benefits are also far better then other competitive company.

Algoma is a good company overall but the work environment on the algoma buffalo is toxic you have people talking about other people behind their backs. Harrassed by fellow deckhands because your work is not up to their level and some dont much care about the condition of the boat and neither does the company. For anyone getting into the marine industry do not work on the buffalo it is terrible and has left a bad taste in my mouth about sailing

Racist people and unsupportive leaders on vessels.

very isolated environment, racist people and captains

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
stressfull and no teamwork management

Emergency fill in as a shipkeeper for a bulk freighter in winter layup, early 2016.  Good working relationship with immediate supervisor and manager the level above.

Wasn't given proper training period. Always asked to cover reliefs on top of normal stretch. Bounced between vessels often. Food budget is not good. Most Cooks don't care after their probation. Ate a lot of french fries, soggy vegetables and from frozen things/hot dogs etc. 

My normal day was one of carrying out my regular duties, plus any other duties that were assigned to me. Loved the feeling of working outdoors and been able to discuss the days events with the other crew members. The hardest part of my job was been away from home for months at a time. Some of the most enjoyable part of my job was working with other crew members.
