ATS Automation

ATS Automation is one of those companies that look good from the outside and you will realize what a mistake you made right after you get in.

People who work there (engineers or shop floor associates) are nice generally, but the majority of the people in the management groups are bunch of inconsiderate gossiping weirdos.

The controls engineering group managers and leads are the worst. What they do is just to put pressure on their team members and abuse them to keep the higher level management happy. Lots of stress!

It is also very hard for personal development. There is literally no training for employees and even if you want top learn something yourself and gain some experience they won't let you do so. ATS is one of those places that once you get into a position you will be there for the rest of your life if you choose to stay with them (and they will eventually lay you off as soon as they find a younger/cheaper work force).

There is also no Job security when you work for this company. As soon as they realize that they can hire someone with even slightly lower pay rate, they won't hesitate to let you go, does not matter how long you have been working there.

Salary and income in ATS is ridiculously low! The difference between a Co-op student and a Junior/Intermediate engineer is almost nothing (1 or 2 dollars per hour). They tend to hire new graduates and pay them nothing, but use their education levels to build up their portfolio.

Corporate ATS and upper management don't care for their employees. Poor wages and poor management is a real cancer here at Life Sciences. The only thing they care about is their bottom line and profits. All the while management gets their bonuses. The workers who actually manufacture the products see marginal benefits. Speaking of bonuses there's a real bias there as well, the people on the floor are getting the least. They expect you to travel regardless of the circumstances, and they will penalize you for it by not giving you a raise. They even will go as far as sitting you down with HR and explain to you how "it's apart of your job" regardless of the situation at hand. On top of their terrible wages their raises are nowhere near what the increase of cost of living is. 2-5% if you're lucky.   The good things listed are in the pros. The people on the floor is what makes this place a good place to work. Otherwise I'd highly advise anyone considering a position at ATS to think twice.

I will be professional and honest with my review;  ATS is a company that claims it strives to develop their employees' career within ATS, this claim is far removed from reality.

The Life Sciences - Services division does not allow and blocks employees from moving to different roles within ATS, even if the new posted role is more aligned with someone's career development goals and experience. The decision comes delayed and vague with no value added feedback. I have seen many of my colleagues and friends leave due to ATS's inability to develop their own people. 

Another reason to be cautious is the MICRO Management approach which has caused many delays for the customers and a very unhappy workforce.
 
It is unfortunate that management is not aligned with the CEO's ABM vision (ATS Business Model). You will be frequently asked to work outside your allocated core hours and expected to stay late. So if you have a family and you are looking for Work-Life balance, think twice.

The company is not as lean as it should be because of politics, especially when people distrust each other by using techniques not limited to micromanagement. As a worker, you will get punished for doing beyond what is expected because it will be considered wasteful.

Managers don't ever get their hands dirty. They are just on phone calls all day long speculating about pointless KPIs, wastefully spending using the company credit cards, while the rest of the team are overworked and underpaid by the hour.

It's a shame because there are very smart people solving complex problems, but let down by the general cost cutting measures when managers themselves are wasteful and not being able to manage.

Spent some time there as a contractor, reporting to someone who should have retired years ago. Inept, weak boot-licker, didn't know his way around a computer. Once his incompetence became evident, micro-managed every aspect of my job to retain imaginary superiority.
Real manager sat in office all day and didn't interact with contractors at all. Carrots dangled with promises of full time jobs, but once milestone achieved, contract terminated and on-line profile and applications cancelled.  Subsequently, complete denial I was ever involved in the major project. Totally bizarre!

* answering customer request, quoting, processing orders, working with customers on technical issues, maintaining transactions records, etc... lot of hours  per day
* I learned how to maintain existing customers and attract new ones
* very good mid level management
* co-workers are great, ready to help if needed
* to keep mind clear working under pressure in multitasking engineering environment
* dealing with customers from all over the world.

ATS provides an opportunity for learning and growth as well as travel to various global divisions, depending on your role and aspirations.

The culture was relatively flexible.

The tough part can be getting used to the various divisions and how everything intersects.

The most enjoyable part was working with my amazing coworkers.

Fast paced engineering environment with a strong focus on CAD (SolidWorks and AutoCAD knowldge). Management is understanding, helpful and expect a high standard of work. Co-workers are friendly and are willing to help you develop skills and are also open to ideas. Documentation management could be improved. Enjoyed the design progress involved at the job

Following the death of the founder the company fell victim to a new management group that drove by numbers, not vision or relationships. Sales fell from >$445MM and various divisions were sold off keeping focus on medical equipment and select other interests.

Fabulous place to work, new challenges to keep the mind sharp are presented all the time. Moving from project to project provides more variety in the nature of work than most other companies.
