Abell Pest Control

Great company to work for, depending on location/management. Abell pays a highly competitive salary in regard to the larger pest control companies. 
There is still room for improvement for salary increases, and base wages, not including commission. Especially for employees who genuinely dedicate their lives to the job. 
As a route manager, you are responsible for everything. Including but not limited to; scheduling clients, returning phone calls/emails/texts throughout the day and night, dealing with emergencies in a timely manner, collecting payments, collecting on delinquent accounts, maintaining equipment(if you can convince management to pay for it), maintaining the company vehicle, providing sales leads(monthly quota), closing sales leads(monthly quota), managing inventory on truck, disposing of waste in the proper manner, adhering to safety requirements, adhering to dress code and company/legislative policies, adhering to proper documentation and licensing requirements dependent on account needs, mapping facilities for electronic service, completing after hours/weekend services based on customer needs, completing training modules within required timeframe, attending branch meetings during work hours, helping out fellow technicians as needed, and other tasks required by management.
Hours can be extremely long during the warm seasons. 
Highly fulfilling career, as you are helping people with their pest issues, and bringing peace of mind to every household/business you step foot in. 
There does seem to be a lack of opportunity to move up in the company, currently. The only way to increase your salary, is to do more work. As most of the pay will come from commission or production bonuses. 
Management appreciates when you go above and beyond the call of duty, and may even give you a few extra dollars for the hard work you put in, but will also throw you under the bus if a mistake is made. 
Abell will force you to close sales leads for clients that will not pay the bill, and will take the money off your paycheque if you were given commission on the sale. If you do not close the sale, management will be upset that you did not try to figure something out. 
Taking 1 week vacation will decrease your monthly salary by around $1000 due to a loss of production bonus. This makes it pointless to take any time off, due to the major loss of income. 
You will learn a lot from other technicians, they are happy to help you out if their schedule allows it. Good culture but seems to be slowly shifting the wrong way, as the company becomes larger and more profitable.
All in all, a very rewarding job. Lots of potential to make 6 figures if you work hard and keep your head down. Would recommend highly compared to previous job experiences. 








Worked 4 years for this company and will not recommend it to anyone that has self worth. The job and customers are great and some new things arise that provide a challenge but the management does not care about this for you.

Typical day of work:
Would need to see 12-15 clients a day. My route was very condensed and easy to get to every call-in. Would be on site to each need within 1hr. If management was required to assist, there may not be any response for a few days or none at all. You were expected to do your job with excellence with only 10 days of training under your belt ( no experience in pest control prior to starting). You were provided virtual training which I do not agree is the same as having management shadow you to show proper techniques.

Management:
Managers did pose issues with clarity. Was provided a written warning and had a sit down conversation with them. Was provided opportunity to rectify and to have shadowing during a day, only to never have it happen and then terminated 3 weeks after. They do not see you more than a source of income and if you are not providing more than you are expected then you are expendable even if you have tenure. Biggest issue I had with Management was the conversation I had were I was told " We won't fire you, you will do that for yourself". 

Hardest part of job:
Work- life balance. You are expected to handle your business accordingly, there was no regards to how long you were expected to work. They favoured the ones who would sacrifice their time to work multiple 12hr days when you are only being paid for 8hrs. Also the constant feeling of being alone since I was not apart of the main branch region.

Summary:

Be prepared to be overworked for an ok pay and not the best core benefits. If you are searching for a "family oriented" kind of team I implore to look elsewhere. The management team only cares about employees who are competitive and are part of their inner circle.

I learned a tremendous amount from this Job.
Although I liked what I did I refuse to recommend this company. They say they will train. That's not in the slightest bit true management expects you to know just as much as them from day 1 and even admitted this is a problem. I was Micromanaged from day 1 never had a chance to work on my own. The communication from those working on the road and those in the office is little to none and a great deal of frustration. Yes you can make a good amount of money but that's the absolute only good thing about the company you could do so much better with another company that provide Soo much more then what Abell does. 

I was employed for a few days under 3months yes they waited till the end of my probationary period to let me go without reason. I was told to be ready and outside at my truck to start the day. I go outside in uniform ready to work and get handed my Resignation letter. The lies and favoritism within the company is Blatant and absolutely noticable. (This is no Reflection on Upper management and the QA department they absolutely rock and are such an amazing group of people you will learn a tremendous amount from them) my review is based off of branch management and Supervision. If you choose to work with this company I hope you have years of experience already and are ready to be Abells Workhorse cause if you slow the pace down you will be fired.

I wake up most days excited and pumped to start my day.
I started off as a Trainee.
I worked hard to obtain my license and became an exterminator. I leveled up not to long after that after i finished my degree and within 3 years I have achieved the highest status of technician in the branch. There is a lot of growth, recogination and appreciation when you work for Abell. I Grew up in the early 2000s with shows about evolution & becoming the best version of your self. When you work for Abell you will self actualize to reach your potential.

I am humbled with the life opportunity and fulfillment they have provided to me.

Advice to Management
The nature of the work does make me feel like I am an avenger or a member of the justice league. In the back when ringing in the get access to the branch/ storage should be upgraded with like voice recognition or body scanning like in the movies. Just a suggestion, it is 2021.

Don’t be misled by the Great Place to Work certification or rankings. From my perspective, the recognition is not truly employee-driven — reviews there are automated, structured, and paid for by the company, so employees don’t get a genuine chance to share their experiences. ( This is what I observed, not an allegation).

This workplace heavily favors certain employees who align with management, while others who work just as hard see little to no recognition or career growth. The pay is $21/hour, and while working 8–9 hours daily is manageable, it becomes frustrating when you see colleagues earning nearly double for the same workload simply because of working area, referred employee and core policies of company designed in a way. 

In short, this is not a transparent or fair workplace, and the culture is biased toward favoritism rather than rewarding consistent effort.   

Do gambling, but please Don't do job if you are not going to be in their top 5. 

For most pest control companies, no experience is necessary,  and this company is no different. They will help you obtain your pest control applicators license at no cost to you, as well as pay for any pest control conferences to keep up course credits to renew your license with ease. They are very caring and very modest with time off when it comes to the death of a family member as well. I was about 7 months into working here when my mom passed away unexpectedly. I had let the manager know that I would be back on the Monday, following the 3 day bereavement rule. He told me to take as much time as I needed, and I ended up being off for 2 weeks to deal with funeral arrangements and emptying her apartment. I was paid for the entire 2 weeks. They care about their employees.

The base salary is laughable but the real money is in the commission. There’s absolutely no support from management as they definitely play favorites and essentially ignore and/or treat the real hard workers of the company like gum on the bottom of their shoe. Be prepared to have more and more work thrown on top of you until the point where you’re working evenings and weekends just to keep up and when you finally feel enough is enough and try to create a good work life balance you’ll be reprimanded for it. We started with five people in the office and when I left there was only one girl left. Almost everyone hates their job there no matter the position but only stay on for the money which can be really good if you’re amazing at sales. 

As a route manager, I go out daily to provide IPM to customer accounts. It's more proactive pest control but still have many accounts where I'm dealing with reoccuring cockroaches and bed bugs. Our manager helps in trouble accounts and qa helps too. We don't see our coworkers often unless in the branch for a meeting. A good team, there is always food around. Customers contact you a lot after hours, management use to send a lot of emails after hours but it has gotten better. A stable company with a lot of perks, parties, paid events for your family (blue jays games, canadas wonderland, medieval times). I won a free trip last year for meeting targets. You can make a lot of money in this company but you need to be self motivated.

The daily tasks of visiting customer sites and inspecting for the efficacy of current pest control management and adjustment as needed. A fairly dirty job dealing with bed bugs, Cockroaches and rodent pests are the most common within the area assigned. Though the area as intended to be the greater Lethbridge area, the true scope of the assigned territory spanned from the B.C./ AB border to the Sask/AB border and from the USA/Canada border to Claresholm. The logistics of the assigned area were the greatest obstacle.

Amazing staff & management team who support each other on all levels.

Through these unsettling times of Covid 19 since March 2020; Abell has gone above & beyond to keep staff safe & informed. Employee & client safety is top priority daily. 

IT department is always available to assist with inquiries & provide solutions, while working to update programs & apps for our front line route managers.
