This company has long been considered one of Nova Scotia's standout success stories — a unique manufacturing business that grew into a global player with an impressive sales and operations footprint. My first three years were incredible: a strong culture, clear mission, and active, engaged ownership that seemed genuinely committed to growth and innovation.

Unfortunately, the final two years of my time there were a completely different experience. There was a noticeable shift in leadership approach. Ownership became distant and handed over strategic direction to a U.S.-based executive who, despite several years in the role, struggled to meet performance targets. It felt as though the company's foundational values began to erode.

The leadership style became increasingly autocratic, and the collaborative, “family-like” atmosphere disappeared. Long-standing employees — even high performers — were let go if they challenged or disagreed with senior leadership. Morale dropped significantly, and the business began to feel unstable and reactive.

The recent announcement that the original owner would be stepping back and transferring full control to this leader only deepened concerns. Many employees are left feeling the company is being positioned for sale, and ongoing staff cuts suggest a larger shift is underway.

This was genuinely the best company I had ever worked for — during my first three years. It's incredibly disappointing to witness its decline. I would caution prospective employees to be aware of the current climate, especially if stability and transparent leadership are important to you.

I was very impressed by the amount of work required to achieve the envisioned objectives. Regular meetings where managements and researchers got together to share results of different experiments were an outstanding ways of creating the interactions necessary for not only for socializing, but also for appreciating other researchers efforts in contributing to the improvements of the the performance of the company's products. However, a discordance seemed to prevail in the implementation of research outcomes and the recognition of the efforts furnished by the individuals in obtaining their results. I am not aware if any of the results presented at different meetings were implemented in the field, what were the outcomes, and if further works were done. The management should revise ways used to keep collaborative network between different researchers and scientists functioning, by for example, encouraging one-to-one meetings between different departments.

I've been with Acadian Seaplants for nearly 2 years and absolutely love the culture and the values of the company.  Management and ownership has a clear vision, and does a pretty good job of ensuring all levels of the organization understands and is engaged in that vision.  Being a global manufacturing company, there are opportunities to grow around the world, and always an opportunity to put your hand up and jump into a project to learn, grow and share your expertise.  

I learned how to operate a boat with an outboard motor with and without a load onboard. I also learned how to operate a hydraulic winch for unloading. Management treated me good by supplying an outboard motor for my boat. The hardest part of the job was working in the blistering heat on the water in the summer. The most enjoyable part of my job was working with my father and getting to see the sun rise in the mornings on the water.

It's day shift and coworkers all stick together to help each other out.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
People that are trained but don't care about there job.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Good among coworkers. It lacks among help from some operators.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Some days busy and hot and sticky.

Management has unreal expectations and absolutely 0 understanding of the work involved. Individuals are belittled and not treated very well by management. The work environment is beyond hot and extremely dusty.
There is 0 consideration towards how the employees feel.
There is a lot of backstabbing and two faced ness by the Production Manager.

Acadian Seaplants Ltd is an amazing place to work. Friendly and safe enviroment, with support when needed. The wages are decent, paid sick days, pension and benefits go a long way.  Working hard and showing interest pays off with chances to move up in the company. I have worked here for almost three years now and really like how all employees are kept in the loop about how the company is doing and what changes are happening.

Great people to work with good work atmosphere 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Mostly spreading moss and rockweed

Decisions made off site not communicated. Culture is poor with different rules for different areas.  Human Resources changes constantly.  The money is reasonable upon entry but no internal promotions.  

I've enjoyed my time at Acadian Seaplants so far - my team is highly collaborative and highly knowledgable.  The culture is very much about growing, continuous improvement and constantly learning.  Everyone I've worked with so far has been incredibly generous with their time to ensure my success.  I highly recommend Acadian Seaplants as a great place to work!
