Alberta Agriculture and Forestry

It is very busy during the spring and summer months. A lot of my time is spent on the road inspecting Beekeepers colonies for diseases and overall colony health. I have learnt everything about Beekeeping in Alberta over the last 10 years. Onsite we have on average 150 experimental colonies that we must maintain and test various miticides and other products on. This job is very fulfilling but can be a little stressful at times. Mainly when it is during the honey flow. Since working with the government researching honey bees I have started my own side business with honey bees selling honey and lotions. It is one of my passions. I have learned the importance of our environment and how vital it is that we protect it.

Can be either a day of make work projects or long hours on the job depending on severity and frequency of fires in a season. Management is usually pretty good, but this being a seasonal job you can feel a division between full time workers and seasonal workers occasionally and it's very difficult finding permanent positions in forestry. Some days are very stressful, long and physical, being physically fit helps a lot. The crews are pretty tight nit and you can usually see results from your work. This is also a very flexible job for students.

The position was very rewarding and personally fulfilling. My training was utilized and improved all the time, and built over time. Work involved a lot of travel, all around the province, that opened up relationships with producers in all cropping areas, from field crop production to special crop production and all the pests ( insect, weed, disease) that affect that production.

Working with agriculture and forestry was an excellent experience it really improved my confidence and skill level when having to deal with high stress levels and different situations on and off the fire line

Very High paced environment, with time sensitive tasks. Prioritizing is a must within this job and communication skills as well. Great atmosphere, and very strong personalities within the work environment with amazing work ethic as well! Thoroughly enjoyed my time working with Alberta Forestry.

I loaded Air Tankers Planes at a Air Tanker base... It was great experience but wish the job was year around. Hopefully doing it again next year. If there fires near your base your busy but if you get  rain then your stuck doing not much.

This department is suffering from neglect and invasion from foreign entities. 

Both NDP and PC governments make critical cuts to departments like these while filling positions with incompetent minorities who come from a high-status elsewhere.

Coordination and management of all forest health related data management projects.
•	Representing Alberta on all GIS related forest health, invasive plant and tree improvement (genetic) issues.

Great place to work. I have had ups and downs but its mostly ups. No benefits which sucks but I am paid well enough I buy my own health insurance. Would highly recommend .
