I will start by saying that this USED to be a good place to work.  I spent 12 years here but now see it was a complete waste of my time. I could have made way more money, had actual opportunity for advancement, and would have been much happier elsewhere.

Management is terrible !! Right from the CEO down to the first level supervisors.  They have no focus, and give no direction.  All they are concerned about is finding ways to charge the client and keeping their jobs for themselves.  There is NO INNOVATION going on here anymore.  Not only that, theyve had 5 CEOS in 6 years and have had 3 different names in as many years. There is a revolving door in the HR and Communications departments.  That should be a hint that a lot of things are not right with this company.

This company has had droves of people that made the "Alberta Research Council" great either retire or move onto greener pastures as this company conitinually tries to reinvent itself to appear relevant and worthy of Government funding.  Employeee morale is some of the worst Ive even seen.

I would honestly have to say that the only good thing I can say is that its mostly 9-5, in town, work life balance is very good and they are willing to buy most/all needed safety gear.

This place is decent for someone fresh out of school to get some experience on paper - but dont expect to learn much or acquire a lot of hands on skills.  For everyone else - take a pass, becuase this place doesnt even offer job security anymore.

Started out as my dream job, turned into a nightmare.
If you have a good manager they fight for you, otherwise sink or swim with the sharks.
Ostracizing of certain people occurs on a regular basis, team building inclusion depends on your role and if you are a yes person. If you object to certain practice's your career there will be over.
Toxicity rampant.
Silo's of groups.
Spending of government funds on ego stroking promotional advertising and cheap cosmetic upgrades that could be spent on research and innovation.


I have worked at many toxic environments and this is not it. You need to understand that Alberta Innovates is funded by the Government and as such is directed by them as well, this is not an independent business. Public service works at a different pace and can be constrained at times, but that's on the gov't process, not always the company. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Not much. Too my change and too close to gov’t. Nothing has been thought through.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Job insecurity and none of the change is transparent. People are hired into leadership positions without any qualifications.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Used to be great, but it has slid abysmally in the last few months.

Working at AI for 1 year in Investment Services. Manager pushes everyone to add more value, be innovative in our roles and bring in novel ideas. High expectations for quality work, but always within reason. Lots of learning opportunities, both through the work and through participation in external engagements. Great benefits and flexible work options.

There is alot of reference to good managers. Every organization has good and bad managers, but overall staff do not leave which says something about the organization, leadership, and the work itself. There are some areas that need some culture changes, but overall this is a great place to work.

The management only cares about management and ignores the employees concerns. They have terminated good employees just to maintain the clique of management rather than remove the toxicity which only allows unfair treatment to continue. Fuels dept and shipping are the worst areas to work in. If you are a brown noser this place will allow you to move up. Otherwise they will look to push you out.

You will have a unique experience at Alberta innovates to work in all sectors across Alberta from health, environment to small to medium sized businesses advancing ground breaking technology. And make a real difference in these sectors by providing growth support. I have never learned as much or felt I have contributed to change in the ecosystem as much as I have working at Alberta innovates. 

Undergoing a lot of changes now, but there are some amazing people working there, and I am confident that they will contribute to the new organization. 

Great people doing good work.  Doesn't get much better.
