Alberta Job Corps

I went through the  3 month program at Alberta Job Corps. On Mondays, I spent time in the Job Corps woodshop, and at the Habitat for Humanity's Prefab shop for the rest of the week.

The people you worked with for the most part, were good to you as long as you treated them with respect, and put in the effort. My case worker was very supportive of my goals.

You were expected to put in the effort, show up on time, and not be on your electronics when you were working. Usually, this was not really a problem with most people.

As someone who was very green with no access to tools most of  my life, it was very nice going to the Prefab shop and having people take the time to patiently make sure that you do things  properly and safely.

At Prefab, I did mostly floors. I learned a lot, and the people I worked under were very friendly. Again, as long as you put in the effort, you should be fine.

Everyone at Prefab was approachable, from the safety manager, to your immediate supervisor, to the shop foreman.

a typical day at job corps would involve being on time, to start my day (most of the ime 15 minutes early)  Then every one will have a short time to settle in before being taken to their various job sites.  For me I was working in a prefabrication shop, mostly framing and sheathing exterior and interior wall, and subfloor packages. learned alot about power tools, and a little about marking wood and steel to avoid costly mistakes or omissions.  Co-workers were awesome, positive attitudes and lots of knowledgeable and practical skills they pass on.  The hardest part of the job I found was trying to remember where everything was, since I am fairly new to trades identifying certain types of wood or tools was hard considering the enormity of the shop, but everything was well organized which allowed me to catch on relatively quick.  By far the most enjoyable part was seeing everything you had been working on in the finished stage, it was really eye openening to learn what really goes in to the floors we walk on and the walls that surround us.

The job itself is in itself, fun. However I personally got blamed for not working enough (maybe missing a week total of working there due to being sick) I was pulled into my CEC’s office and was given trouble for not showing up for work enough and was told I had 3 weeks of not working. I was wondering why I was getting underpaid. Every morning you clock in and clock out before going home, however after each job you’re supposed to sign a sheet of paper. The supervisors would rarely hand me the paper to sign and had me get out of the vehicle at the end of the day to do clean up around the warehouse, but rarely gave me the paper to sign at the end of the day saying I worked. They don’t even tell you that it is required for proof of work for payment. Therefore I was very underpaid. And this has happened to multiple workers.

A great place when you've been unemployed for a period of time. I have been unemployed for three months and they helped me with my resume, get tickets, and work searches. Its a nice place cause the coworkers are in the same position as each other with different walks of life. Positive towards each other and it helps that everyone wants the same opportunity to get back into the workforce. The work itself is great we are giving choices of what experience paths. So it helps everyone in any position they want to find employment.

The concept of AJC is good for people who have been laid off or are generally struggling financially. AJC however for standard temporary employment is honestly terrible. My boss was very rude and demeaning to us, they tried to teach us what they thought is realistic workplace habits but instead it was all just a high school setting. in my time being there i was only ever late once to a work day by about 5 minuets due to weather and i was nearly verbally assaulted by my boss. They had told me i was never going to be ready for employment in there eyes. Overall i only recommend this place for people in need of employment.

this program is amazing it really opened my eyes on how to properly write a resumes, how to us help properly and just how to really make a difference in getting a job. 
this program also make you work really hard, when i started here i was always here and i was very hard working and committed. How to work hard and with others of all ages.

my day at work is amazing, its busy there always something to do.
the co-workers i work with are great there understanding, hard working and just great. the best part of this job is all the hard workers and when we get to go on site and paint and work hard.

I sat around quite a bit, without much work to do. Laziness wasn't ever tolerated, however nobody was ever lazy. We just had a lack of work. I still did enjoy the fun activities we had participated in, as well as the training programs provided. When they were organized properly that is. I am still very appreciative of what they were trying to do. Integrate youth and helping them get job ready for the real world of working. It was alright.

Went to Alberta Job Corps at a low point in my life, previous job loss and a terrible job market can really take a toll on your state of mind when you haven't worked in a.long time. Alberta Job corps hired me on, helped me gain the training I needed to help secure full time employment in the field I wanted to get into. 

Staff is amazing, fellow employees are great and depending what your doing there, you can make some really cool things and even some friendships to last.

good with hours and with life learning skills. the management needs improvement. they need to pay attention to the people who are serious in taking the next step in life as job wise. they need to help those who have a certain skill and apply that to a job to help them to get by in life. everyone deserves that part in life to reach their basic needs.

I had a great time at Alberta Job Corps, we learnt a lot by doing other side jobs such as painting and other hands on construction duties. I worked with others that were in the midst of finding full time jobs or school programs. The hardest part was leaving when the required time was up because the people were fun to be around both other co-workers and the staff at Alberta Job Corps.
