12 hour shifts (6am-6pm,6pm-6am) Switching between days and nights every tour. A typical day is start at 6 but be there 5-10 minutes earlier, do shift trade with previous crew, look over production list and possible equipment to be loaded. Check emails to see if anything important has been sent out. Inspect equipment, get on clamp trucks (forklift with roll clamp) load trucks and rail cars as they or the rolls become available. The trucks arrive as they please and are not scheduled, there are also some empty trailers which have been dropped in the yard for preloading. You may have 4 trucks in a shift or 40 trucks. The management has not replaced staff as they have moved on in order to get a better balance sheet and likely bonus for themselves. The operators are mostly good to work with but management likes to micromanage and blow small issues out of proportion. Hardest part of the job is dealing with management and lack of staff on nights and weekends. Best part is regular days off and the holidays when you become a full time employee and most of the operators are good people.

This company used to have an excellent reputation.  People were treated proper and fair.  Since the change in government and the downturn in the economy, also factoring in the covid pandemic, this place has completely lost its lustre.  There are people in positions of power that have zero people skills and are void of morals.  The company values are on display on the internet but they simply don't exist.  It's very sad to see this place diminishing like this.  Though the ownership had committed to not laying off or eliminating employees, this is not the case now.  They have really understaffed themselves in multiple areas now and are expecting current employees to carry the load which is incredibly unsafe, unfair, and unjust. I fear this company as it currently operates is not going to last much longer in the region and that is a travesty.  Unless some things change dramatically, don't waste your time with them.

ANC was setup in 1990 and continues to be one of the top Newsprint Mill in North America. The synergy of Power Plant and Mill helps to keep the company keep profits relatively steady. Also, it has couple other businesses. With the decline of the newsprint industry, the company is actively investing in multiple areas to ensure continued prosperity. One of the good things about this company is its constant pursuit of new business development initiatives and opportunities. 

However, the high workload can sometimes feel overwhelming. Additionally, there is a lack of formal training, requiring employees to self-teach. Employee development activities need improvement, and more motivation for employees is required. Some people work extra hard and some ride on others and hardly work. 

Ownership (Stern Partners) is very involved and looks for ways to improve and invest capital into the company, which is promising. Overall, it's a good company, but with a few changes, it could become a great place to work.

I usually started my day at ANC by checking phone messages and email messages.  Then I would start preparing my Daily Production Report which consisted of production information sent to me daily by Department Managers. Once finished I would photo copy and distribute and also email to managers.  I would then open, sort and distribute mail. Prepare any outgoing courier packages and mail. Distribute any incoming courier packages. I would type any corrospondence, memos etc. that has been requested. I would check for any documentation, edit and prepare it for the monthly fincancial report that I prepared using Adobe. I help out where ever needed (AP, filing typing, etc.

This company is by far the best company I have ever worked for, the keys to thier success would have to be the company culture, the hiring technique, willingness to invest in thier employees success and true commitment to team work. The pay and benefits are excellent and good work/life balance.

Don't take my word for it. The turnover rate is extremely low. I would be there today if I had not relocated back to the United States.

Very hot working environment. I learned a lot about leadership and dealing with different personalities. The ability to get the most out of everyone that worked under me is one asset I grew the most. Co-workers were great! We were a big family and did lots together on our spare time. Hardest part of the job was dealing with the heat and the fast-paced environment. Being able to keep everyone calm and collective when things weren't going good. Most enjoyable part of my job was the self satisfaction I got from bringing out the best in others.

Normal day, come in early to relief other summer student. Told what is happening in the plant. Do equipment safety inspections. Co-workers were friendly and helpful to learn from. Learning and advancement was very limited as management would only give access to what I needed to learn and nothing else. (Being put on the paper machine and having a 4th Class power engineering ticket I was wanting to take initiative and learn the pulp side of things)  Most enjoyable part of the job was the free meals every few weeks.

Used to be a great place to work until upper and middle management changed from Greenfield.  Continually went down hill and now is just another place to work.  There is nothing separating it from anywhere else, and the leadership is very poor top down.  They are however quite progressive, and that does attest to the fact that they are self-preservationist, since it is no longer economical to make newsprint and they are still finding ways to make ends meet.

This company is extremely understaffed. Their employees pay for the understaffing with their time and sanity.

The management is the worst i have ever seen in my life. Backstabbing, gossiping, making people feel worthless. 
I was hired for a 40hour/week position.
I worked at least 50 hours per week, with no OT pay. And took no lunchbreak - ever!


Once a great company with a sterling reputation which has dramatically went down hill over years. Used to be like family now management has zero respect for employees, micromanagement and worries about non issues while actual issues are ignored. Cost cutting has reduced employees to simply numbers on a spread sheet. Turnover rate has been very high the last few years especially in the office staff as well as warehouse department.
