This is the best job I've ever had. As an avid outdoorswoman, the tasks I was assigned were perfect for my abilities and lifestyle.

As an Information Officer in Castle Provincial Park, I was tasked with ensuring campers were aware of the new fees implemented in the Designated Camping Areas (previously random camping spots), as well as collecting payment from non-compliant campers.

Of course with major changes such as new fees, there will always be people who oppose the new rules and will take their anger out on you. That said, the good campers FAR outweigh the bad ones, so it didn't really get to me.

Overall, I would definitely work for Parks again and hope to come back next summer.

I was seasonal with parks but kept getting my contract extended so I was essentially permanent for 3 years. The team was great. Management very supportive in my region. Pay was average. Schedule was difficult to acclimatize to as it was never the same week to week. I would say it’s a great way to get your foot in the door with parks but I’ve yet to see the fruits of that. Permanent job opportunities within parks are scarce and very sought after so competitions are tough even for internal candidates. 

Overall great experience I just wish there were easier ways to get in permanently. 

This place is/was a disaster waiting to happen. Supervisor is only around 2 hours per week. No training until July, no truck until July, no working cell phones provided until July, no pay until July, no support from PRROs at all. ATV is a 10 minute walk from the building and no extra paid time to go and get it and return it, so you have to do 60 minutes work in 40 when roving. No time to stop and do anything. 10/10 would not recommend. And there is always 1 person who doesn't do their job and doesn't care and drags down the whole team. Cashout paperwork is still done with pen and paper or you create your own excel spreadsheet.

As an Alberta Parks employee, a typical day is spent ensuring the cleanliness of the campground. Alberta Parks employees check garbages, collect recycling, clean washrooms, pick up litter, mow grass, and cut weeds for everyone's enjoyment. I have learned how to make adjustments to my routine when a task comes unexpected to ensure my priority tasks are finished before the end of the day. My co-workers and supervisor help work as a team to make sure the campground is clean. The hardest part of the job is picking up dead fish off the beach. The most enjoyable part is working at a comfortable pace.

Working here I witnessed deeply incompetent leadership. The equipment was poorly maintained and there was an awful culture of favoritism and laziness. They did a very poor job defining roles and responsibilities for their employees. There was almost no accountability or standards set which resulted in regular/normalized bullying as well as employees using drugs on shift, racism, and constant inescapable gossip/drama. The pay is good for easy work but I would not recommend this job for young adults who are serious about their future as it will teach them terrible workplace behaviours

The Cypress Hills is an incredible park with great amenities like fishing, hiking, camping, and amazing history. However if falls short because of stubborn supervisors who refuse to do anything beyond recreation. The information in the visitor centre is incorrect and they have no interest in improving it. Attempts for career growth are quickly shot down and seasonal staff are disrespected regularly.

Working in the heat. Working with difficult staff members.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Great. Good work environment . It was a giid mixture of cultures.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Cleaning shower  buildings and outhouses. Doing landscaping. Cleaning the beach. Doing site clean up. Changing garbages and recycle bins.

The reality of the job can be disheartening. It seems very lovely at first but your impact can feel underwhelming. Good experience but not a place for people who want to challenge the status quo. Do the job. Enjoy being outside. But if you go into it expecting to see huge shifts you will be disappointed. The organization is very stagnant. 

Every region is different, however.

The heavy duty task, and the washroom duties.

A feeling of being with family and performing daily routine, 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Morning task, login, interact and plan for the task of the day and later we perform the task with reference to time.

Was not told initially that I was expected to be on call everyday and had to work weekends. I was not given alot of information about the job duties or any support on how to complete duties. Much of what I done I had to figure out on my own. Was given alot of leeway on changes and was never questioned on my methods. Management was supportive of whatever I did.
