Alexander College

Alexander College is a really good place to work - lost of support from middle and upper management (I'm lucky to be in a department with highly skilled mentors). 

It can be frustrating dealing with some of the behavioral issues associated with this student population (low level of background knowledge regarding subject matter and academic integrity). However, with a healthy dose of patience, encouragement, and persistence, while maintaining high standards, it is possible to guide the students to the desired level by the end of the semester. (This goes without saying of course that not all of the students are up for the challenge and commitment that it takes to succeed)

Pay raise was great (I know not everyone feels this way). However, I believe a lot plays into these raises, such as experience, publications, education, student reviews, classroom observations, additional contributions to the college etc. and not everyone is aware of the accolades that each of their colleagues has. It would be nice if the pay scale system was transparent. 

Owners of the college attend town hall meetings and treat instructors with respect and seem to really care about the success of the college on all levels; instructor satisfaction, student experience, bottom line.

For sessional instructors at Alexander College, the primary professional advantage is the flexible work schedule . This non-traditional contractual arrangement allows faculty to easily balance their teaching obligations with concurrent postgraduate studies, research, or other external career roles. This degree of independence over time management is crucial and makes the role highly attractive to specialists. However, this flexibility comes at a significant cost: the high workload per course. Sessional pay typically covers only the in-class lecture hours, yet instructors must dedicate substantial, unpaid time to complex course preparation tailored for an international student demographic, meticulous grading of assignments, and extensive one-on-one student support. This discrepancy means the appealing flexibility is quickly overshadowed by the intensity of uncompensated labour, turning the role into a demanding, high-burnout position that requires considerable personal sacrifice to maintain quality academic delivery.

Though this is a college that has grown very quickly in recent years,  it is still a small college and therefore opportunities for professional growth are very limited. The average age and professional qualifications of incoming faculty and support staff has been dropping for years, so the college has become a great place for grad students to make some extra money for a couple of years and then leave. But it's not really an ideal place for someone looking to make a long-term teaching career or interested in opportunities for promotion in administration. If you care about students, you may be discouraged by the resources available to them. They built a nice new campus and yet there is no dedicated space to meet students for office hours.  Staff are generally nice and helpful if you have questions or IT problems, and there are sincere efforts at team-building.

I've worked at Alexander College for a little over a year now, and it's a very welcoming environment. I chat with different staff members from different departments with ease. What I love most about Alexander College is the work-life balance; we work in a nice hybrid work model. We have 3 weeks of paid vacation and 5 sick days per year which increase with each year we're here at Alexander College.
On top of that, the compensation and benefits are good! We also get bonuses and incentives for our commitment to AC which makes me feel appreciated at work.

AC has many supportive and caring employees. I have enjoyed working with the staff and faculty over the last 3 years. I have never encountered a negative situation with anyone. I find AC a great place for new graduates who have a passion for working in post-secondary. There are many opportunities to grow within your department as well as other departments. I am truly grateful for the opportunities presented to me while I worked here - I for sure have built strong professional connections. 

Taught lengthy courses on Academic writing; loved interpersonal engagement with students and aiding them in their success. I learned to be comfortable in a public speaking capacity; organizing and communicating curriculum; maintained a high level of academic integrity and sought to instill similar qualities in my students.  

I did not enjoy the take home part of the work; as an English instructor, there were many long days of marking essays.  The most fulfilling part of the job was in direct contact with students and in helping them achieve their potential.

My experience at Alexander College has been incredibly positive. The supportive and collaborative environment fostered a sense of belonging and allowed me to grow both personally and professionally. The dedicated faculty and staff were always willing to go the extra mile to ensure student success, and the diverse community enriched my perspective and understanding. I am grateful for the opportunities I had to contribute to the educational journey of the students and be part of such a vibrant and inspiring institution.

When I started here all of the staff were very welcoming and helpful.  The Vancouver Campus is in a great location but it's a bit smaller compared to the Burnaby one.  

I enjoy working here and alongside some great people.  The student population seems to be growing and it would be great if there was more space for staff and students.  Most students are international which can be both challenging and rewarding.  I find that you have to be patient with them as many of them are new to Canada and need things explained.

I really enjoy working at Alexander College. The staff is very friendly and everyone gets along very well. I love the fact that we treat each other like family, it allows for a very pleasant working environment. I also appreciate all the effort that is put in to make all employees feel comfortable. As someone who have experienced unprofessional and unenjoyable working environments, Alexander College puts a smile on my face everyday so far!

Was a part time instructor here for a year. Around 5k per course, one of the lowest in BC. Micromanagement with unreleastic expectations. Some support staff was nice while others are angry they have to put up with bad students. College is privately owned so money making is bottom line for owners. Classroom packed to full, 500 students and staff share one bathroom. Students are there to fulfill immigration requirements, no one is really there to learn.
