If you are looking at their tree nursery positions, stay away. You'll get paid better pushing a lawnmower, and you'll be required to do more physically demanding tasks. Although, now that I read through some of the other reviews, the maintenance positions probably suffer from similar problems. 

Find work elsewhere unless you absolutely have to, and if you do, leave as soon as it benefits you. You will not get that raise. 

You are forced to take an hour unpaid break every day; this is only to prolong the time that they have you available on the floor in a day. You are often expected to do work during that time because management does not hire enough people to properly cover the floor. Enjoy getting chewed out for taking your 15 at the end of the shift when you've already given them 30 minutes of free labor that day.  

Alternative is one of those businesses that make their money by seriously underpaying their workers, overworking them, and then quietly celebrating when they leave so that they can hire the next person and take advantage of the 'new guy' enthusiasm. I wish I had read some of the  other reviews here before accepting the job in the first place. 

As soon as you aren’t they kick you to the curb once you start not blindly following upper managements requests.  God forbid the labourers in the field need a mental health day, upper managements will make jokes with everyone in the office regarding people’s mental health. They do not care about their staff personally unless the staff are willing to allow them to continue to do the terrible stuff they do and say about/ to people. HR acts like a friend and that they care about your wellbeing and mental state but only if it’s starting to affect the companies bottom line. Every other department has fallen through the cracks with the exception of the Garden Centre and Excavation since they are consistently bringing in easy money and are the golden children of the company. Owners will go off on a department because their home wasn’t taken care of good enough for them, will tell you that they are the longest and best paying of the companies of your wages/salaries. Definitely not a safe environment to be in mentally. 

this job requires you to be gone almost 12 hours of the day, in dangerous weather conditions, regularly. your pay is cut every opportunity they can, if you didn't get a break it is still taken off your pay cheque as well as having mandatory overtime that's unpaid almost daily. you're told you'll be off at 5:30, the EARLIEST they let you leave is 5:45 and any time after 5:30 is unpaid unless it's an hour or more of time. people are hired and fired almost weekly due to the inconsistency from upper management and the lack of communication from upper management. management on a crew level is good but anything above that you won't get communication or clarification from. the staff are kind, funny, energetic people but they do not outweigh the negatives about this workplace.  

I was suppoed to get a raise after 30 days working in their shop. Instead i was fired on the very last day in my 30 day probation and they hired another student to replace me for cheaper labour. Dont work for this company in their machine shop, there is a reason the shop forman as only been there 2 years, they fire people before they start to make too much, im convinced they will fire the next student they hire as well, so they dont have to give them a raise. Not once was i ever told i was doing something wrong or given any constructive crtitism that could have helped me avoid being terminated. Long story short, keep looking, Alternative will fire you before they give you a raise.

Free pizza every blue moon if they even still do that

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management is absolutely the most stressful part because no one can agree and when they do its because thats what benefits the owner and no one else.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
They didnt care about you at all unless you needed to go to a funeral 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Wake up early work all day maybe get a break sometime in there and if you do you beat believe your gonna have to work an extra day

Managment is more about making money at cost of employee and customer satisfaction. It's impossible to get a raise. They will lay you off and never call you again. They will fire you with 1 day advance. The other employees are great to work with but the way management treats employees is with very little respect. They have poor planning for jobs and no overtime unless it directly benefits the CEO.

My first two weeks at Alternative Ltd. were difficult. I worked for their Landscaping team in the summer of 2023, and quickly grew to enjoy the work itself and my coworkers. It can be difficult on days where you're off, but you have to remember that you and your coworkers are a team. So long as there's one person actively trying to break the ice and keep the team motivated, then projects go by easily.
I intend to return to work for them in the spring/summer season of 2024 (if they'll have me!)

Probably the worst summer job i have had in my entire life. My foreman verbally abused me for 90% of the summer and when i finally did bring it up to management they did absolutely nothing because this foreman had seniority. Staff turnover rate was astronomical and the pay was the bare minimum.

I worked there for 3 years, and overall it was alright. The work was hard but still fulfilling. Management definitely had its problems, but the co workers made the job bearable

The owner is very cheap don’t expect much money or many raises. But they were very good never had super long hours, well maintained equipment. Must professional company I have worked for they have a very good way about doing everything.
