Art of Where

Working there was like sitting in warm bath slowly being brought to a boil. They had a good thing going, and then slowly chipped away at any perks that cost them money. And then any perks that -didn't- cost them money.

The colleagues were fantastic and reliable. Coworkers were not only kind and fun, but would go out of their way to make working there more enjoyable. Folks would bring in bouquets from their gardens, baked goods, fresh mint and home-made lemonade. They'd stock the bathroom with hygiene products paid out of pocket, bought face-shields for elderly and pregnant workers during Covid, and would stock tea and cookies.

You work directly with the company owners, who don't communicate with one another and all want to be the person in charge. They will repeatedly show up unannounced with contradictory orders. If they need to speak with someone they don't have control over they will resort to screaming. They don't understand how their own products are made or how the machines work, so you end up having to learn to be your own technician. They have a very low bar for products to pass quality inspection, heavily favoring quantity over quality. The micromanagement was beyond anything I'd seen before.

Then there's a million more little things, like how one of the owners in particular can't go an hour without negging. That almost everything is word-of-mouth to avoid accountability. That they are proudly "reactive, not proactive." That they refuse to pay a penny more than what they're obligated to by the collective agreement. That there's no way to grow in the company. That summers there are hot enough to make people sick.

I worked here for a bit and was sorely disappointed of management's treatment of the newly unionized workforce. I think they unionized in early 2019 or something, which was one of the selling points for me wanting to work there, and there was pretty clearly a lot of resentment towards the workers who were trying to build and grow the union and get the collective agreement done which made a very tense environment. I was interested in being involved in the union but changed my mind because it seemed liked they all mostly had a target on their back and were tired from the work it entailed.

The work is decent and the training is as well. I loved my colleagues and am friends with a few of them still! 

The workplace gets extremely hot in the summer but I think it's an issue with the building or something. The schedules were pretty inconsistent and last minute and your hours could change drastically from one day to the next. But from what I understand, they have a collective agreement now so that's better as well as other perks. The managers also invest way too much bias and emotion into their choices because they own the business. They need to work on being more impartial. 

This is a cool business idea and has such great potential! If you're pro union, I definitely encourage you to apply!

I would have loved to see management stop resisting the union so much and making things so awkward for their workforce and less stressful for their union stewards. Truly, it was weird. They'd be a lot less stressed and angry I think. 

Very clear from the start that the job is production-oriented. Nothing wrong with that, however, the way they enforced this was mainly through fear and threats to your job. Instead of training you better, they just cut your hours if you weren't up to their standards of speed, because they value quantity over quality. There was favoritism with employees, some people got written up for things such as taking too many bathroom breaks, others it was overlooked. No breaks, just one half hour paid lunch which made the day feel more grueling. It is clear they employ people facing barriers, due to language or lack of experience. They then treat employees as dispensable. The job is precarious, and they let people go without warning. There is toxic fumes and poor ventilation. Prior to being unionized, the wages were unfair and inconsistent among employees doing the same job.

The fumes and chemicals in this place will give you a headache and possibly make you want to vomit occasionally. The heat in the summer is intense and has resulted in a few people getting sick especially in the press section where workers are terribly underpaid. 

the managers are micro-managers and will be WATCHING you closely and walking by very often to check on you. 

It says a lot that this place unionized last year. Obviously employees were not happy with the conditions of this workplace. 

Avoid if possible 

Positives:
The owners are amazing, they care about their employees. We really feel like we’re a big team and work together, we also get raises when we’re good at our job and show that we work hard.
The salaries are way better than any other job that doesn’t require any studies or diploma. Its a great student job, I loved working there. 
They offer the best health insurance i’ve seen.
The lunches are paid !! 

Negatives:
It gets very warm in the summer, but they give us fans and popsiccles when its really warm because the building where it’s located doesn’t have AC.

This company is on the decline. 

Management are "nice guys" who take no responsibility for driving the company towards growth, and in turn expect the production staff to to just accept that they deserve less.

There is a union, but a portion of it's members are more loyal towards management through personal relationships, therefore snuffing any collective bargaining power.

They recently relocated to an over-crowded location with several health and safety issues and broken toilets.

I worked here as my 2nd job for almost 2 years and it was worth all the time I spent there. The company board has some of the best attitude you can find and you get to work hand in hand with CTO who's a yound guy with a great personality as a leader and as a lead engineer.
If you get the opportunity go and work at Art Of Where wether you're new in web development or with sine  experience.

One of the most interesting and relaxed job I have ever had. Honestly I learned a lot about fabric and the process of making clothes and I'm not even into that kind of thing. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, I never felt like I was bothering someone if I needed help with anything. The management was also very helpful and welcoming and easy to talk to about any concerns. 

Low effort but high stress job. One paid lunch break. Management contantaly walks around the floor to make sure nobody talks. The equipment you're given to do your job is often broken. Management blames you for any on the job injury you receive.
The summer heat is horrible. The day are long. Favoritism is rampant as well for those that are anti U. 

I love doing hands on things and this company was great for that! The work environment is friendly and encouraging. I loved what I was doing. The only downside was some negative people but I just avoided them. I got to listen to podcasts while working and learned so much from both the job and getting to listen to what i wanted when I worked!
