WARNING: Would Not Recommend Working for Astro Amusement

This company is extremely unprofessional and exploitative. They deduct $200 from your paycheck just for a regular t-shirt — that’s 11-12 hours of work gone before you even start depending if your a student or an adult as they pay student wage ($1 BELOW MINIMUM WAGE).

They say you can get a $120 bonus for working the last three days of Labor Week, but then intentionally cut staff during that time so they don't have to pay it. Chances of you getting to work those days are 50/50. Even if you receive the "bonus", you lose out on $80 for the t-shirt.

Managers are rude, dismissive, and shows zero concern for employee well-being. As a game attendant, you're expected to constantly yell and push people to play games — nonstop. If you're not shouting and bringing in customers, they’ll either yell at you or send you home early.

A major issue is they over hire — during group interviews, it seemed like half the applicants were hired, leading to short, inconsistent shifts. You're given a start time but never an end time. Most shifts are just 5–6 hours with a 30-minute unpaid break, and you typically work only 10–11 days out of the full 18-day CNE event.

Overall, They treat employees POORLY. Only consider this job if you’re desperate for experience and have no other options. 

It’s a pretty standard job I’d say. It was my first job, but personally, I’d suggest you only take it if you live relatively close to the CNE, or with the heavy consideration that your summer is basically cut in half. They take $200 out of your paycheck, and while you can pay it back by doing the bonus (3 consecutive work days as the CNE closes) it’d be smart to not let them squeeze that extra labour out of you (you get $120 in return) As for staff and managers, some of them are going to look at you crazy for voicing your concerns, but c'mon, some of these guys will light a cigarette in front of you. Don’t think of them too personally. Easy to apply, mediocre stepping stone to buff up your resume. 

As a set up worker, a typical day included:
Help unload containers with food, wires, inflatable castles, game prizes, ride pieces and fence pieces.
Help lift and carry ride pieces and bolt them together by communicating with co-workers.
Set up wires from power generators to rides.
Set up a perimeter of fences around the rides for safety.
Neatly organizing game prizes in an appealing way for customers.

As a rides attendant, a typical day included:
Stand for long hours up to 12am.
Enthusiastically and positively interact with customers.
Gently load and unload customers on to rides.
Check tickets for any forgeries and check for the proper amount of tickets for admission.
Firmly and kindly refuse customers without the proper amount of admission.
Keep watch of surroundings to ensure customer safety.
Help close up or pack up everything depending on the day.

What I learned:
Teamwork and communication is needed when facing a challenge.

Management:
Usually told last minute when and where to work.

The reason why I stuck with this company was because I couldn't find another job. It's not the type of job I'd stay working at for more than a year. You work every weekends, and sometimes during the weekdays for events such as taste of danforth, taste of asia, the ex and so on. You work outside. This means that you would have to stay outside in the sun for long periods of time. It gets very busy and frustrating depending on the game you're operating. The best part about working with this company would be the co-workers, they are very friendly, helpful and easy to communicate with. Also in some events, you get FREE FOOD. This includes private events and events such as the rib fest. Overall, I'd say if you cant find another job, work for this company. it's not the greatest but it's not the worst either.

The management was very disrespectful when approaching her about any concerns. The management team also lacked organization and did not keep their workers updated on any changes that may have occurred with scheduling. I stopped receiving shifts without any updates as to why and have not worked for them since. Unfortunately, I wouldn't work for them in the future again. Save your time and find a job else where. 

A typical day would be going to the location at the scheduled time, getting trained for two minutes and waiting for children to come to your ride. 

The hardest part of the job was making sure that I was receiving the right pay.

The most enjoyable part has not been detected.

this company is a very very very useless and on organize company that I have ever been in my life I would never ever in my life recommend this job to anyone to work at. Because first of all do you talk to people and you know they have no respect whatsoever they're all lazy cocoons and you don't know what they're doing and also like how can you guys be drinking alcohol on the job. And when it came to pay day they would very stingy and I'll give your money back if you have to leave early no make up some lie and say that they lost the key and they won't give your money you have to wait where is company over to work out I would never ever ever in my life work at this place ever again thank you

A typical day at work involves hard work, standing for long periods of time and cleaning after events. What i have learned working with Astro amusements is insuring customer safety, interacting with customers, provide proper customer service, working together as a team with other co-workers. The hardest part of this job is constantly having to deal with the drunk mangers which is very unacceptable. the most enjoyable part of this job is meeting new people.

I worked for this company at the start of the month for a one day event. I was hired off here and prior the event received absolutely no training and very little information about what I would be doing. It was a 9 hour work day, basically slaving away in the suns peak hours (35+ degree weather) and I still haven’t received any form of payment. It’s so upsetting that we worked so hard and some of us still haven’t been paid for the labour weeks later. The only thing that saved this company was the fact that the venue provided food and cold drinks. Otherwise, do not work with this company unless you have no choice.

The manager was very rude and unprofessional, even ignored requests of people wanting to use the restroom, didn’t provide anything besides uniform which we would be sent home if we didn’t have it with us. It was a very unpleasant experience. Payment methods were very unprofessional. Ignored many text messages and even questioned why I needed someone to cover my spot for like a minute. It may sound like a good opportunity but it’s really not.

I think they r great to work with alot of poeple dont know that this is i life time job its not simple u can just be like ok am a carny i have been with alot of show and  astro was by far the best one so far i work for i wish i never left the way i did   so stop crying and man up they pay me ok its a.small show not everything work out all the time and that telling part i guess do your job and u wont get yell at drinking i never seen so  stop talking poo    i would love to come back if they let me to give it my all from danny champoux great show
