As a Junior/Part-time server you were only given 2 hour shifts, which would be totally fine if the amount of tasks that were given to us didn't continue to increase. It became more and more difficult to all the tasks with the growing amount of residents and additional tasks within 2 hours. If we ever went over 2 hours it would be our fault and managers wouldnt listen to our complaints or take them seriously. 
Also when I started college I had to change my availablitiy because 2 classes interefeared with times might be schedualed to work. I was told that I would have to work those days no matter what because "it was not a nescessity and you agreed to open availability when you started working here." I wored there for a year and a half. My co-worker alos tried to change her availabilty because she couldnt work for religious practice. they also told her it was not a nescessity. Also when I first started they said i would be given a shirt and work shoes for my uniform. I started at the same time as another girl, she was given her shirt within a week or two. I have worked there for a year and a half and never got my shirt. I just used some extras that they had in the staff room. Therefore they were also very unorganized. there were also some people who worked multiple positions, there were many times where staff had been double booked and we ended up having to work short. 
Overall the managment is aweful and unorganized.

Almost every single employee there was unable to take their contractually obligated unpaid breaks. You were not allowed to be paid more than 8 hours per day. Not even a couple mintues more, they claimed this was because of how important our breaks were. In reality they were passively forcing people to work through their break without saying anything. For many of the employees who had been working there for years they had just gotten used to not being able to finish their work in the alotted amount of time. Nobody had enough time for themselves, which lead to an incredibly individualistic workplace. People never helped without getting upset and I was regularly told that I simply wasn't a good enough worker. I was regularly compared to a dishwasher that the chef had trained prior. He told me "Even a dishwasher who's never cooked was able to do better than you." 

Two major problems with this. First its completely innapropriate to talk to an employee like that especially one who is only 6 weeks into the job. Secondly, it shows that the Chef judged people personally based on their past job experience. Why should I be embarrased that a dishwasher who worked there for years was able to do better than me?

Sad to confess but the regional management of this company are bunch of naive sales professionals from various industries and hence they don’t have a clue about the daily operation and running a retirement facility. They have loose ears and believe every gossips which are constantly sent to them by their spies. Constant phones calls and text being sent late at night and if they aren’t answered they hold grudge against that person which is being taken out in the form of passing rude comment during the group conference calls. In order to safe guard their jobs, the regional team can go to any extent including termination of senior management position comprising of sales director, executive director and others. Sad but truth, the regional team has plenty of ego to be satisfied by the unit team and in order to be a favourite you have to go all out.

I have personally witnessed my high potential management employees being terminated over night without any explanation.

Needless to say a place where only quite ones can last and collect their aeroplane miles and pay check.

By far the absolute worst job ive ever had. Management ( husband and wife) are jerks beside 2 of them. They train you and leave out so much information and expect you to do everything perfect without properly training you, then get mad when you make a mistake. They run the worst kitchen ive ever worked out of. completely unorganized and inefficient. the rest of the waitstaff are all young teens and are very nice friendly kids that work hard and are shown little appreciation. the housekeepers on the other hand were a complete nightmare. 2 out of the 3 of them made me dread coming into work. They were rude, snobby, and had little patience when you needed help. They acted as if i wasn't trying and spent my day dilly dallying  and they would get mad at me for little mistakes when in reality i was still just trying to learn. Ultimately i hated this place and i hated coming to work everyday. Overall a terrible environment. The ONLY nice part was free leftovers and the elders that lived there. Most of them were so sweet.

A typical day at Atria for me actually begins at 11pm each day, Tuesday-Saturday and ends at 7am the next morning. I work alone my entire shift, which involves: cleaning, sanitizing, organizing, and doing general maintenance on all the common areas in the retirement building community. I have a set list of tasks to get done each night and only 8 hours to get it all done, so planing ahead is a must to ensure no time is wasted. My managers are great, they're very easy to talk to and if any issues arise they're always quick to help resolve them. I would have to say the most enjoyable part of my job is when I get all my tasks accomplished and my managers come to work in the morning and see how well the community is taken care of and maintained. They always have something nice to say about the hard work I put in to keeping the building above standards.

Work there for 4 years.  I was very proud of my work but ED controls everyone .. The employees do not matter.  They fire and hire constantly.  Management and head office control everyone.  It is not a healthy place to work. They have little reguard for residents or employees. BOTTOM LINE IS MONEY. l would not ever encourage anyone to plan a future there.  I have seen over 6 chefs leave or be fired in 4 years.  There are a large number of residents that have dementia or Alzheimer's.  The employees are not trained to handle any situation concerning dementia.  It is assumed that you DO NOT SAY CERTAIN THINGS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE!  If you do u are fired.  Good LUCK! l wouldn't wish a job of any kind not even my dead dog! You can not make life for your self here, you never know when you head is on the chopping block. You are ask to work positions you are not train to do. Make a mistake and ypur fired. Very cruel place to work they have no empathy or compassion.

Come in kitchen/back door in uniform or get changed in spacious single bathroom, sign in at office & return to kitchen, prepare carts for soups/salads & juice/milk, serve said consumables, return cats and begin busing (cleaning) dishes off tables, grab metal foldaway stands and plastic & rubber platters, serve four residents at a time, take orders from the limited daily menu, return with food that is requested, repeat until section clear, begin busing for plates, prepare dessert carts, serve dessert, continue busing, clear tables entirely, set tables anew for the next meal.

You learn to deal with people in various states of both mental and physical health brought on by advanced age

The residents are friendly, as are the coworkers. An ideal first job

Management seemed to always change, but may have settled by now.

I'm a current employee at Atria Canada. In my opinion, Atria is not a good place to work, specially if you are finishing high school. 

You're trained for more then there is in the server description and have to do way more then you expect. This is my first job, and they have overwhelmed me with things at this place. 

Yes, you do get a few benefits if your full-time but if your part-time you have no such luck. You have to work at least 3 days a week or they threaten to fire you, and they refuse to listen if you put in a time request. I had to fight for myself to get time off for my wisdom teeth removal.

Another thing is that Atria pays very little for how much you do. 
My responsibilities are way more then they should be and yet, I only make minimum wage with no chance of bonus for a year. It's horrible.


I did house keeping and serving aswell has porter during the year I worked here. 
I've never worked under such unsupporting management ever, management told me I was there to worry about my job and that it is. As I was trying to make sure the work was done and done properly because they can't do their jobs right. 
You're supposed to get free meals but as I ported i never got anything 
I was never appreciated for my hard work and going above and beyond and taking on extra tasks that weren't my job. 
I did extra deep cleaning in my free time.
Worst management ever. They need to worry less about themselves and pay attention to how to jobs are being done and the workers concerns. 
I emailed my boss about an issue I had concerning my job and she never replied to my email and never said anything to me in person about it. 



As an independent retirement community the management and staff work closely with the residents on a daily basis to ensure their needs are met with efficiency and compassion. Managers eat all meals with the residents in the dining room and serve the tea and coffee for each meal. The entire staff; managers, sales leaders, housekeepers, servers, bus driver, engaged life coordinator, maintenance and kitchen staff work together to ensure the building runs smoothly. As a 24/7 operation the managers live onsite in order to provide on call overnight coverage. Living onsite has the added advantage of forming a bond with residents and their families.
