Back stabbing and ill-manured employees who will go at any lengths to jeopardize you if you don't click with them or don't part take in their gossip. I've seen throughout my time there a handful of good employees who were unfairly dismissed. 

Most of the buildings they oversee are the ones major real estate players pass on. They are terribly maintained and constantly have HVAC and  structural issues.  

It might be different for other locations but Calgary is a cesspool. You can have new hires doing the same job as you getting paid more than you who have been there longer with the same qualifications. 

Not a good place longterm.

Most of the day's spent were fairly similar and straightforward. The management is rarely seen and not really much of "managers" of teams. The people themselves are great, and always helpful.

Sadly the company prides itself on its people and culture, but rarely did I ever find it that to be the case. There is no real performance reviews, or regular touchpoints on tasks. Things get thrown at you and you are expected to do them without question, even when it is out of your scope. 

Everyone it is in for themselves and its all about who you know vs. working collectively.

A day at work could have me performing various tasks from opening of building and checks, tenant requests, mechanical emergencies, contacting trades-persons.
I can say that I have developed strengths in relating to tenants in a calm and reassuring fashion, quick thinking hands-on solutions.
I would report to management on a daily basis in person, also would report in a daily log book.
I would be on call to 25 (min) tenants 24 hrs.
 In the winter season, it could get difficult shoveling the large sidewalk surrounding the building.
I found that communicating with the tenants on a daily basis to be enjoyable.

Avison Young staff have provided me with great leadership and empowered me to do the best job possible for my tenants and building owners. Their diversified portfolio always kept me busy and challenged.

Most days at work start with ensuring all systems are working normally and that all tenant spaces are safe, clean and comfortable. I would then usually doe either preventative maintenance, work orders and other daily tasks.

Avison Young is a good way to breakout into the professional world. They're hard on newer staff, which is good to establish expectations. However, I found the dynamic between the sales agents and supportive research and administrative staff to be, for a lack of a better word, prohibitive to growth and confidence. This is dependent on who you directly work for, but as a women surrounded by predominately male sales-agent, I felt uncomfortable most days and belittled.

I am happy with the work that I perform and take pride in the work that I do. I am very happy with the independence of the position.
That being said, I would like to address the poor communication and results I have received dealing with Avison Young HR department. For the past 10 months I have tried to gain access and confirmation of the benefits I was promised when I accepted their Offer of Employment. This matter has yet to be resolved to my satisfaction.

- Expected to work and answer phone during vacation

- Expected to drive to tours without compensation or parking pass
- Too many delegators not enough workers
- Work from home is impossible unless you are sick
- Unrealistic deadlines
- You don't receive commission until your 5th year
- Nepotism and cronyism

Pros

Enjoyed the small office atmosphere, worked as part of a larger team based in Toronto. Worked with manager to maintain condition of tenant's buildings and closely coordinated subcontractors to do any work required based on budgets. Responsible for tenant relations. Managers were very good to work with and provided much information and training. 

Last 8 years of my 23 year career in commercial real estate were spent with A &Y. Managing Director among the best in the business, H.R Director was terrific. Overall really enjoyed the experience. 

Most notable was the amount of opportunities given to younger professionals to excel and earn significant incomes. Great too see!
