BAT has a global distribution system for the delivery of cigarette brands to individual retailers.  Their business model is based on creating efficiencies in that distribution system at any cost. That includes the cost of having you as an employee. The top down management approach is effectively a creativity killer.  
Work life balace is talked about within this company but is not a concern.  While working with them I attended a meeting where they showed work assigned (task management) to be twice capacity.  In essence knowing exactly what they were doing, not caring about it, burning out their people, and having the balls to show us exaclly that they knew what they were doing all along.
Iniital salary and bonuses can be good and hard to pass up given an offer, but if you are young and have options don't choose this company.  There are other company's that offer similar salary and benefits to start, having a tobacco company on your resume is a buzz kill for future opportunities with other companies.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Opportunity for growth and personal development.
I was able to discharge my duties without fear.
There was an opportunity to bring my creativity to relevance. Clear responsibility and accountability.
Freedom through responsibility carrying out my duties.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
It’s a regulated industry.
We have to operate within the  dictates of the regulations and Tobacco Control acts.
Some customers actions may the capable of violating the laws, so it’s our duties to educate and ensure they also behave in a lawful manner.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The Work environment encouraged  freedom through responsibility. Encouraged creativity and developed empowered workforce.
The culture was an inclusive one and respect for individual differences.

As an initial job perhaps, but plan to get back out fast.   There is zero loyalty from the company you and your family.
The management culture is a life sucking micro management style more suited to trained monkeys than people.
You will be given a computer to which they upload objectives broken down into tasks.  Informally you will be asked to agree to unrealistic objectives that have no real meaning other than to provide the company with a way to terminate you for not having met them.
You won’t be able to express any individuality or creativity and if you stay long enough any initiative and creativity you had will be sucked out of you by the life sucking machine that is BAT head office.
Your career and life will be entirely uncertain as is the industry as well.
Put your talents towards a company that values you personally and professionally not here.


Spent over 10years with company when they started direct delivery and was a good company at the beginning but after numerous reorganizations throughout the years, it became a toxic work culture and environment.  My last few years I only stayed because of the compensation & benefits nothing more.  They try too hard while competition not so much and yet their market share continues to decline.  Do yourself a favour and look for other companies that are more progressive and in an industry that is growing.

Great place to work with with a world class environment equipped with chat room, snooze room, games "relaxing feel" environment. Good mix of young, diverse with strong mindset.

Horrible liars 
Bullies, the A group and so and so on.
Disgusting - mental abuse.
They ask you always go beyond and beyond and then they expect it.
Exclusive entitled selfish people and the  people who do not do the work and lie get promoted.
Never in my life have I ever been strung along and disrespected lied to and used .

Was okay in the past but not anymore...sales and market share on the decline and management seems to not have a clue on what they're doing - doing too much while competition not doing much at all and yet the sales and share just continuing to decline.  Arrogant mentality by senior management.  Company just getting tougher and tougher to stomach and work for-if you have a better prospect just go there and run away from this company!

A great business globally. However, Canadian business is under pressure and seems that the overall strategy is not robust. Hence there is a great pressure on junior/ mid level management. There is focus on doing a lot, however attention to what is right and doing few but right things will improve the business and lives of many employees.

Started in BAT in non-management and progressed to a management role within 3 years.  Learned how to manage a busy and diverse workload - no 2 days were the same!  Great people, culture and an environment where you were given the responsibility and trust to do your job.

The ability to quickly maneuver through new challenges and capitalize on opportunities is valued. Research and experiments are not welcome, rather, they prioritize fast-paced decision making via intuitive thinking and guesstimating.
