There is a saying around here... We like what we do; we don't like who we do it for.

The management is very discriminatory and heavy-handed with discipline; you will have no union protection, even though you paid your dues.

Responding to calls, sometimes bad calls, is tough on the psyche, and managers will exit you if you show any sign of distress. NO PTSD TREATMENTS HERE.

Once on Car the employer can work you up to 16 hours at a time, making work-life balance impossible. 

The only people profiting here are the union, the managers, and the Unit Chiefs.

I worked in the Vancouver dispatch centre, so I can't speak for the other 2 disp. centres or working "on car" but what I can say about the Vancouver Dispatch Centre is that it is a place I truly enjoyed working. Everyone from the other call-takers and dispatchers to supervisors to high end management really wanted to see the new guys succeed and excel at the job. Training was very good, support on the floor during practicum was incredibly strong and once on your own as a signed off call-taker you could ask questions without feeling judged or given a hard time.

You truly make a difference in your community working for BCEHS in the dispatch centre.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Not having the support - disruptive upper management with change over with directors and managers pulling each other down

Provincial organization so it’s hard to have a solid crew

Remote work so it was lonely at times

What is the best part of working at the company?
BC EHS has increase number of FT positions, has excellent Health & benefits, pension and Employee assistance. Great work mobility (all throughout BC)

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The work is emergency health service, requires being in high-stress situations. Working over days and nights

Backstabbing, unsupportive and untrustworthy management. Upper management have no idea what it’s like to be a paramedic- and they apply how you should behave in an office setting to dealing with gang bangers and stabbing victims and terrible situations. They just don’t get it. Lower level managers have no management education and it shows and upper management head in the clouds. They’ve done nothing in 2 years after a terrible culture review and it’s only getting worse. 

Historically known for having little opportunity for steady employment/hours, BCEHS seems to be changing its ways. While years back it was difficult to find full time employment without many years of service, that is no longer the case. Full time positions have taken over and paramedics are starting to get what they deserve across the province. The future is looking better for BCEHS. 

Equipment Supply Technician 
Lost of cleaning, repetitive work. Money could be better. Good hours at the location I am working. 
You learn a lot about the ambulance service and how it works and gain knowledge to grow into other positions if you are interested. 

Standard 12 hr shifts, no scheduled lunch or coffee breaks but most days you'll have time btwn calls to grab something.  Lots of interesting courses online for free and several in person classes throughout the year. Very minimal supervision.  Lots to learn throughout your career. 

Toxic work environment.

Loved my patients and I worked for them.

No true loyalty amongst peers, fair weathered "friends".   No support, peer support is not confidential, unethical practices among direct street supervisor.

Poor pay, FT vs PT does not create collaboration.



Great place to work. Very friendly, convenient location that is close to home. Employees are great to work with. It is a team environment. And since we are in the union, there is job security.
