You’re experience at BCAA will be directly dependent on the department you get into and your direct manager…. period and exclamation point.
There is many great places to be in this company and many great people, some departments are over budgeted and properly staffed, high staff moral and low turnover, others are the complete opposite, having high turnover, low staff moral (up to senior management level), causing those remaining to deal with heavy workloads and little recognition due to the overall department seen as underperforming by the senior team.
The other negative staff moral issue I witnessed was the many discrepancies where within the same department, individuals get very different and inconsistent annual reviews by the varying multiple team leaders, some costing the employee many thousands in bonuses (as they “almost made it” but are expected to try harder next year) whereas others get a slightly better review from another manager, causing frictional disparity within the labour team.  
I was lucky to be in a good department although having 6 manager changes in 14 years and minimal to no change or positive advancement in the work environment although each manager stated they were committed, but found no upper support and chose to move to other departments, retire or take remote positions.
Ultimately  I found the advancement and hiring processes was the main cause of low staff moral. This was due the system to being at odds with making the company better through the process, I found some of the nepotistic influence created poor decisions.  Resulting in many (not all) new hires, although educated, retained no actual related experience in the field they were hired and many of those I found to be connected to other staff/management, so sadly much better applications get passed over.   Some of these new hires move quickly up to management and into departments, they again, have no related experience to benefit the team, leaving them to rely on team leads that struggle with little direct effective support.  Unfortunately this also creates management needing to sub source experts as they are unsure and unconfident to make any decision within the department they are in control of or making very poor ones that get dumped part way through. Once staff witnesses the managers are unable to make correct, relevant, meaningful decisions in a timely manner,  staff moral further declines. 
Hint….if in a meeting ask who is related to others within the company, at one, only myself and one other had no prior connections in a room of 14 plus.
Another observation witnessed was that the senior management has no positive direction,  always attempting to come up with new chapters or ventures unrelated to the basic core business, rather than focusing on it.  
This I seen was due to those in the these positions had absolutely no knowledge or desire for the basic core objective and rather looked to diversify into areas they understand and to make them appear as diversifying and expanding the company in an personal attempt to self champion and to leave a legacy they could use to move to other corporations ( many CEO changes).  

Otherwise this is a company steeped in positive history and has the potential to be the best in North America if only they get the directors they need to champion to be the best Automobile Association for the motorists of BC.

Best of luck on the interviews and be patient as it can usually take them 3 months to hire or more and may require multiple interviews, ( unless you have a connection wink wink ).


This company is taking a turn for the worst, the management team is inexperienced, and over bearing.

They expect you to dedicate your life to the company, or you will never "meet expectations" 

Inexperienced management takes things personally, and then portrays their personal feelings in your yearly reviews.

When these issues are brought up to management, and HR, they turn a blind eye, and end up ignoring your concerns,  and pretending it's a non issue.

When I stared it was a dream come true, however things were steadily declining the whole time employed.

The company is pushing you to work harder, without recognizing the effort put in, they are constantly adding tasks to the drivers, and taking them away from other departments (dispatch/call takers)

Make sure you stay on dispatchers good side, because they will complain about you, and you will hear about it, however they are never held accountable for their actions (they are unionized, and get away with murder)€

You start out getting paid a percentage of your wage, they will promise you 100% after 2 years, however after over 4 years of service, I still was not at 100%.

The benefits are good, they pay is okay (after you get to 100%)

I would not recommend this job to anyone, unless you are close to retirement, I wanted to retire with the company,  but was forced to move on due to poor management, and lack of transparency.

This company will 100% lie to your face, and make false promises.

Context:  4 month Temporary Vacation Relief Contract

It's a great company to work for overall if you are fortunate to secure a full time, permanent opportunity. Good working hours, pleasant environment indoors and it is located in a nice green-space and quiet park-like area in Burnaby.  Beautiful new building with multiple wrap around deck off the lunchroom space.  I found it is also a great place to learn new skills in a short space of time.  

Customers and staff members are a joy to support.  Things tend to move quickly in terms of changes, which is great, however like most offices, communication within sub teams does not always keep up.  The hardest part of the job was getting trained, and getting all of the required information quickly, but that was likely unique because I was filling a temporary space, so I had to learn on the fly while working with skeletal crew due to multiple illness absenteeism, and vacation relief, etc.  I was lucky to work with a few excellent teammates who taught me some new technical skills, as well worked with a great desktop support resource.  The best part of the job was helping out staff members who called in for support from the Contact Centres and Emergency Assist Road Crews.  Great bunch of people that I will miss supporting.

If you are looking to progress your insurance career, it won’t happen here. You can start at the membership agent and make yourself to the senior insurance advisor in 3 years. After that if managers don’t want you to progress they will hold you back.

You need to work hard to get a successful rating, to be able to apply within the company. I worked hard, which was seen by my coworkers but not good enough for my managers and their stats they now keep. Everything is about numbers and not about how the customer feels. 

To get successful rating your manager needs to agree with you. 

My Manager is sitting in the office taking video calls  5 days a week and not running the office. Oh and she doesn't work Saturdays. 

Manager at this location killed the workplace culture. Can’t talk to your coworkers without manager thinking that we are planning something. 

Had to take Short term disability because the job and stress applied at work caused me to break. 

Benefits are good but RRSP not so great. 

Great co workers and customers are the best part of the job. 

If you are a person that comes to work and work hard this place is not for you. They want you to make everyone other than customers happy. 




BCAA pays well and provides great opportunities to its staff for upward and lateral movement. Working in its head office, I've had great experience working in groups across functional areas, and I've seen that staff in senior positions have largely come up through the ranks.

My main critcism is that the office itself is old and drab and very divided/dark in some areas. Management under a new CEO is trying to speed up the organization a bit (which is lethargic after 100+ years of relatively steady business) and there's definitely a bit of generational divide in the workplace when it comes to change adoption (older folks who've been in their jobs 20+ years are reluctant to move out of their comfort zone), which leaves some key systems/processes the business relies on outdated, though the desire to update and change is definitely there (and execution slowly creeps forward).

When I started with the company I was very excited to be part of the BCAA team as they are known world wide for being one of the best employers to work for..  I quickly realized that I did not believe in the morals or the way they dealt with customers.  As a employee I was treated fair at the beginning but being this was the first shop ever that bcaa had opened there was alot to be learned and alot of continuous changes . Not all for the better . As time went on I saw alot of my fellow employees jobs being eliminated and therefore they were as well. Many left due to the lack of follow through that was promised or bonuses that were being taken away with no explanation . Forced to sign contracts and were told if we didn't we would have to find other work. I stuck with the company in hopes they would figure it out but was highly disappointed. I was the first to start and the last to leave .

I want to say it wasn't all bad when I was at BCAA. Which is true. Things started out fine. But the levels of management and how they are implemented are a problem. Basic questions and concerns require so much paperwork and red tape. Dealing with bad mental health amongst working was deeply stressful too, with gasligting and borderline harrassment type behavior being the norm in the office. This was both a localized problem and a head office issue as the breakdown in communication between all levels of the company is a a pattern. There seems to be a disconnect between the frontline employees and those in the upper level of the company. I am in a new position in a new company and any questions/concerns I can take directly to my manager. If communication is improved, things will improve for everyone. 

Most days I get in early so I can get emails done and be ready for the project team meeting. On a typical day few weeks ago, we had a late change from the client to deal with. I got Roger to do a quick technical feasibility analysis whilst I went to see  the project Manager.He explained how important it was, so I reviewed the plan and found a way to get the change in without harming the critical path. The team weren't too happy to have to squeeze in another change, but when I explained how helpful it would be to the customer they got down to updating the specification and use cases. I bought in pizzas to keep them all happy and to let us steal a bit of space at lunchtime. We'd got it done by three and, with manager mucking in we got everything else back on track by the end of the day.

The best part about working at BCAA is the great digital equipment and program's they have for administrating the Evo Car Share program.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The most stressful is long sitting hour's and computer screen burn-out.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is well organized with some staff on remote and in office shift's as well as temporary worker's training and administrating.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Come in on time, turn on work space computer, communicate with manager, commence work, and complete all given task's.

I credit BCAA with my sales training, understanding of customer centric policies and approach, emotional IQ, management, administrative, and interpersonal abilities with colleagues and customers. BCAA has an amazing training programme, keeps employees engaged, has an excellent culture, stands for the right thing every time, has awesome policies and procedures, highly competent managers and Directors, good holiday and benefits package, an amazing pension plan, opportunity for advancement and changing roles. They span the province so moving is never a problem. They take good care of employees!
