My comments are targeted towards IT applicants. 

Good IT staff. They're really earnest in wanting to do a good job. And like many places they're friendly.

Poor management. Generally they don't see staff as partners, more like a commodity. Which wouldn't be bad if they paid commodity prices.

Given that it's crown corporation it has a hard time finding direction. One week it's "let's googlefiy this place" to "you need be careful with your office supply budget". The provincial government is too attached to the profits from gambling and can be impacted by the party in power.

Most of the revenue from BCLC comes from casinos, not lottery tickets. You have to be comfortable working in the gaming/gambling industry. After leaving I had a sense of relief about not contributing to problem gambling, I was surprised how I saw that as benefit afterwards. If you really like gaming/gambling you're not allowed to play at any casino in BC as this would be perceived as a conflict of interest. 

Being a small to medium sized company there aren't a lot of opportunities to move around if you find that your job has become stagnant. Role changes general come from reorganizations, applying for a different job tends to not to work out for internal IT employees as BCLC has hard time getting external applicants and they really want to bring in people whenever they can.

If you are in IT you will have to live in Kamloops. The city is OK but it's small and remote, 4 hour drive to Vancouver and nothing else in between. if you aren't happy you will have few options within the city, there is a good chance you'll have to move if you feel it's not right for you. If you're from Kamloops this isn't a issue but its a risk for those not from the city.

If you're an experienced IT professional outside of Kamloops I wouldn't recommend BCLC to you. Not a lot of lateral movement if you want to change up you're role, and limited opportunity if you want to change companies.

I would recommend to those with no opportunities or are already a resident of Kamloops.

Working as a Customer Service Representative at BCLC has been a genuinely positive experience. From day one, the onboarding and training were thorough, and I felt well-prepared to handle customer inquiries. The team is incredibly supportive, and management is approachable and open to feedback.

One of the biggest perks is the work-life balance. BCLC offers flexible hours and remote work options, which makes it easy to manage personal commitments. The benefits package is excellent, and the organization promotes wellness through various programs and resources.

The job itself is meaningful—you're helping customers while supporting a company that reinvests in the community and promotes responsible gambling. It’s nice to know your work has a broader impact.

While the role can get busy during peak seasons, and career growth within customer service is somewhat limited, the overall environment is respectful, stable, and rewarding. If you're looking for a customer service job that values people and purpose, BCLC is a great place to be.


If you do not have any strong connection with someone at BCLC,  do not join. Getting a job there and getting a promotion at your job is totally different than a private company. At BCLC everything depends on how strong are your connections with others. So your skills, experience, and knowledge do not matter as much as your relation with someone at BCLC. Their interviews are only a fake practice for the audit and public. 
Consider all of their permanent roles are given to people they are recommended via their connection by direct appointment. So, the chance of getting those roles externally is zero. But you might have a chance to get a temporary role. Just remember when you join them do not focus mainly on working hard and learning, instead focus on making connections, praising the managers and whatever you think to get a promotion or a permanent role.  

As an IT Customer Service Technician, I provided IT help to the employees of BCLC over the phone, email or in person. I worked directly with the customers to solve their technical issues. Here, I learned troubleshooting techniques, customer service and researching techniques. As I was only in my second year of computing science, I wasn't able to tackle the more challenging problems and had to rely for support from my co-workers. While I enjoyed the challenges I also enjoyed learning from my co-workers how they would solve each problem and interact with the customers. The management was great as he was continually looking for opportunities for me to expand my knowledge and experience within the company. The hardest part of my job would have been overcoming the challenges and finding the solutions for each customer. However, it was very satisfying when I found those solutions and was able to interact with the customer and fix their issues.

Pay scale is average to just below average.  There is little room for advancement depending on if your dept promotes within.  Mgt gets all the benefits and training.  Yearly raises are .5-1.5% so don't think you will keep up with inflation.

Middle mgt is out of touch with what senior management is wanting to do.  Near the bottom there is little to no direction other than just get the job done.

Lots of team leads and managers/directors that don't know the first thing about managing let alone leadership and inspiring a team.

The BCLC is wonderful to the regular employees not to contrators. There are little perks that anyone can acesss like free coffee. It is an organization that makes a lot of noise about life balance but that is only for full timers. A typical day at work involved weeding through a lot of feel good emails, then jumping through hoops as you jump through hoops of various unrelated tasks that they like to bundle together. Management seems more concerned with looking like they are doing good than actually treating eveyone who works there well. The hardest part of the job is keeping up with deman and using obsolete equipment. The most enjoyable part of the job is learning about new things.

Overall as a crown corp in many ways it's not your typical govt job in that the requirement to compete on a global scale is needed (online gambling) as well as the need to continually evolve.

Can be exciting with new things always coming about.  However some depts are much better than others.  Some promote within only while others look around.  Opportunity to climb or move is very limited in some cases.

Compensation is on the lower side of things (no bonuses) and there is no cost of living raise or promotional raise.  Only a small merit increase of less than 2% based on your performance.  Basically over time you fall further and further behind.

Good top end management but middle management is very weak and not aligned.

Typical day was confirming appointments, prepping files, reports, documents and supplies. Meeting with clients and ensuring compliance issues met and sales targets are being achieved.  Resolved any outstanding issues with equipment or productivity and ensure promotions and incentives are well executed. The best part of the day was working with the clients and feeling good about genuinely helping their business.  The hardest part was trying to achieve it within the boundaries of government policy.

Bureaucracy made everything impossible. Micromanagement and bullying from HR leadership

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The company creates social anarchy and hurts people with addiction and then professes to be a leader in social responsibility. The culture is one of bullying, vying for promotions at all costs, throwing colleagues under the bus, toxic behaviour of HR leadership

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Fearful. Never know who is out to get you. Lack of psychological safety.

I worked there for 2 years. I watched, helplessly, as they periodically got rid of anyone who was over 50. They recently fired 25% of their workforce, all over 50. During the period I was there, my supervisor, my manager and my director were all fired. It doesn't seem to matter how good you are at your job. Someone is always looking to find fault. This practice is top down. No one is happy and everyone is constantly looking over their shoulder! People put in long hours out of fear. This organization is typical of Gov. Lots of incompetency, especially in management. It stinks!
