-Every shift was a different job. I learned a lot about machinery and how the dock works
-There were so many foreman, you rarely had the same one twice in a month
-There are hundreds of employees. But we would usually have the same people in our work gang. I really liked the people that I usually worked with. We all helped each other out.
-The hardest part of the job was having low siniority so we weren't getting a lot of work. Sometimes we would go for a week without getting a job.
-The part I enjoyed most about the job was the physical work, the people and the amount we were paid when we did work.

Worked mostly 10hours per day, 6 days per week,and enjoyed it immensely..Learned how to do many jobs, labouring driving ,,,forklifts,reachstacker tractor trailer, and a computer operator for the last 20years,,i was trained as a penthouse checker and had to work with at least 20 co, workers at any given time telling them what to do and where to place containers....there were not too many hard times... working out in the cold when I was a labourer..The most enjoyable time was seeing a ship loaded to the gills and leaving our docks, knowing that we had all worked as a team to get the job done,,,or completing the loading on railcars

This company offers a valuable career in all facets shipping and cargo logistics. Including positions in trades, office work, Heavy and light equipment operations, Crane operations and much more.

Advancements in areas of company management are always offered. As are positions in Union management.

Wages are top dollars for most all job situations and freedom to manage your time off is available.

This is a great place to work where you get to load and unload cargo from cargo vessels, this place taught me how to think outside of the box while also keeping everything safe and organized. the job is generally pretty labor-intensive and requires long hours of physical labor. the most enjoyable part about the job is the freedom and variety of different jobs that are available to you.

No discrimination and the people and co-workers are very well trained and safety is everyone's job. Bothers and sisters of the ilwu it has been a pleaser and most interesting life thank you! Good job awesome time. Please for experience u need money and they have it for training and health welfare backing when you need it. All my relations the calvert's.
  

I enjoy working with all types of HD equipment performing every type of repair required.  Upgrading my knowledge as newer equipment is designed is also something I thrive on.  Producing quality work in a timely productive manner is what I strive for.

if you are offered a longshore application, i dont recommend taking it. as a casual you will receive little work. by the time you move up the boards automation will most likely be in full force.

you sit around in the dispatch hall with no promises you will get a job. working first aid there is only possible if you are on the higher boards, and they will only train you for new positions if you have the hours.

Good management. Great place to work for. Good salary. Very helpful staff and great location to work at. Also enough parking and cross training available.

Flexible hours. Great pay and opportunity for advancement. Union atmosphere. Wish i started 20 years ago. Job until i retire.  Recommend  to any tradesman to put there name in.
