Here's a critical opinion about each aspect of my work experience at BDO Canada LLP:

While the variety of tasks may keep the job from becoming monotonous, it could also be overwhelming for some individuals. 3. **Management:** My role as a team lead was significant in managing my team and ensuring its success. It would be interesting to evaluate the effectiveness of the higher-level management at BDO in terms of providing support, resources, and guidance to help you carry out my responsibilities efficiently. Good management support is crucial for the success and well-being of a team.

4. **Workplace Culture:** The culture in a technical support environment can be both challenging and rewarding. While the focus on teamwork and training is evident, it's essential to assess whether the work environment fosters a healthy work-life balance and offers opportunities for professional growth. Workplace culture is a significant factor that can influence job satisfaction and overall well-being.

5. **The Hardest Part of the Job:** One of the most challenging aspects of my role has been the heavy workload, constant incident management, and managing a team. This level of responsibility can be mentally and emotionally draining, especially if there is a lack of resources or support to manage it effectively. It's important to consider whether the job demands are reasonable and sustainable.

6. **The Most Enjoyable Part of the Job:** On the positive side, my role likely offered a sense of accomplishment in resolving complex technical issues and leading a team. Providing solutions and improving team performance can be highly rewarding. However, it's essential to weigh this against the potential stress and workload to determine whether the rewards outweigh the challenges.

In summary, my experience at BDO Canada LLP as a Team Lead in Technical Support is characterized by a demanding role with significant responsibilities. While there are opportunities for learning and personal growth, the workload and management support need to be evaluated to ensure job satisfaction and overall well-being. Balancing these aspects and considering whether the challenges are manageable is crucial when assessing the suitability of the role.

I invested a couple years of my life into the Burlington Office. This is a very disorganized, unencouraging, depressing office with no staff morale. They promote based on amount of time worked there, not quality of workmanship. So while someone is overqualified for a management position, a lesser individual will get it if they were hired before you. If you aren't involved in the Audit side of the Firm, forget about the Partners caring about you. The Small Business Group, Tax and Administrative Departments are run by monkeys. The Managers/Supervisors of the above are a joke whom are unhelpful, and have very little knowledge of what their staff do. The Firm caters to Partners, Audit Managers and Audit staff. Job security is virtually non-existant in this office. I saw countless hard-working staff in every department lose their jobs because the Partners could not hold clients. There is unrest in the Administrative department due to people who have worked their too long and won't change their ways. If you're a young professional in this office - forget about voicing your opinions, ideas for the firm. Under the age of 35 and they don't care about you. Compensation is significantly lower than that of other firms and they justify this on the economy. Having an issue with work/personal/coworker? Need to talk to HR? Forget about it. The two HR people at the Burlington and Mississauga office (they work between both offices) do not assist in any way at all. They will give attitude to anyone who brings an issue their way because they don't want to deal with it. Overall BDO might be a good place to work in other offices, but I would be careful about Mississauga and Burlington. I personally saw too many horror stories in both offices to know that these two offices at least, are not ones that you would want to make a career out of. Good luck to those who try this out!!!! Prepare for disappointment with this joke of a corporation!!!

When you start you're promised the world - training, room to grow, opportunity for education. What I got was not entry level, but a full-on corporate account with no training on the software nor explanation on what information is needed. There is no manual, no formal training, just dive right in and fend for yourself. The first person helping me was patient and could explain well, but he quit because the company screwed him after writing his UFE, and didn't offer the raise nor promotion he was promised. The next manager who was hired from the outside couldn't train nor had any patience. 
The software was not always smooth and needed tweaking, or remapping, but the manager would do it quickly in front of you "you won't need to know this" - but eventually you do or else you're always asking for help. Time is money, so you can't ask questions as you go, because you're taking time away from someone else who is charging time on a client. 
The partner that came in a couple times a week does not chat, nor even say hello as he walked by. 
There are peaks and valleys - the hours you work overtime at tax time can be taken during the summer as flex time which is terrific, but when there is no work there is nothing to do but file, read. There was no work for weeks and they wouldn't train me on anything new. I got laid off for lack of progress. But there were no files to do. I hope all their business leaves for bad service.

Stay away from here if you can. I would not recommend this place to anyone. 
Management doesn't have patience to teach people what is required in order to enhance their career. No one has patience or the time of day to go through and explain things...except for maybe 1 partner on the floor. Mistakes are not allowed at all. That doesn't help a learning CPA student since it is a training office. But if you make a mistake and someone complains about you then you get the boot. Partners only care about income stream and clients. They do not have your back at all as an employee. Seriously, horrible culture as everyone is always stressed and doesn't have time to communicate or talk to you about your performance until it is too late to salvage what has already been done. 
Co-workers are rude. I worked with someone who constantly talked down to others as if he knew everything. I don't know how he is still around yet they fire others who try and learn at their job. 
Seriously if you can just stay away and go to a big 4 accounting firm. At least they treat you with a little bit more respect. 
They fired a bunch of people at the start of January 2017 because they didn't have enough chargeable hours in November and December. Why? Because there wasn't enough work. So they are over staffed yet they have jobs advertised for still hiring. So pathetic.

I started with the company to complete a specific task in hopefully a year’s timeframe. I created the manual for my job, Cleared the backlog/task in 6 months, trained two people, and then was fired for politely asking a coworker to provide an example in a peer feedback review that she gave that was inaccurate in hopes to better understand her perspective. She said I take a week to do a task I complete the same day I receive them, which is heavily documented through emails time stamps and spreadsheets. 

The company has a high turnover rate they don’t care to listen to anybody else, but the higher up and if you have an opinion, you most likely will be fired for it. The company doesn’t really care how many hours you work as long as you are meeting your numbers if that means you have to work more than business hours that is a you problem. Not a them problem. They set the standard for what they think should be done every month and grade you on your performance based off of that guideline without taking any factors into account. I was walked out of the office with zero notice. They take away vacation time to “boost productivity” they inaccurately store data themselves, so you often have to keep your own spreadsheets and information documented or else your benefits and job are on the chopping block. All this to say I was excelling past my markers and was still fired without explanation due to the situation described.

I spent many years at BDO Canada and consistently delivered top-tier work, even under managers whose leadership style was abusive. Recognition was rare, support was conditional, and the internal culture rewarded silence over integrity.

Pay is well below industry standards, especially for the amount of work and pressure expected. There is little room for growth unless you're willing to threaten to leave or are a favourite. Salary adjustments for performance or tenure are minimal, if they happen at all.

BDO talks a big game when it comes to values like inclusion and empowerment, but much of it is performative. There are no Black professionals in senior leadership, and barely any across the organization, despite a workforce of over 3,000. Diversity is a social post, not a priority.

When my role was eliminated, there was no transparency, no acknowledgment of my contributions, and no effort to transition with care. After years of loyalty, I was treated like a line item.

There are smart people at BDO, and some teams truly want to do good work. But the lack of real accountability, systemic issues with pay equity, and surface-level commitment to DEI make it hard to recommend.

When I first met with the Partner, I thought what a great company, this is going to be a really good company, I was going to feel secure, the individuals that I was working with were going to be polite, fun, respectful.....I couldn't have been more wrong. 

I quickly realized after a month that the culture of BDO is not at all what it portrays it to be. Between affairs in the interoffice, gossip, backstabbing, two faced, rude, bullies in the office, I hated my reception position after a month!
You quickly realize who is in what group, who are peoples favorites. If you are the new person, forget about being involved with anything. The company meetings are a joke. People are on their phones, talking about their weekend plans. It's honestly, working in a circus.
I was bullied by other people in this office to the point where I was going home upset and leaving early just to get away from the bullying and the gossip. 
I was told there was potential for me to move up to be able to do what I wanted to do in a different sector of the company, and I learnt through other people in the office because the Partners couldn't tell me themselves, that that wasn't going to happen.
Please be aware of this company!

A pleasant environment.  Very busy, all staff on the administration team were very helpful.  Great team work.
I was involved not only as reception relief but also in office services, keeping 4 kitchens clean, informing office supervisor when office supplies needed to be ordered, unloading stock and re-stocking on shelves. Placing paper in photocopiers, keeping work stations stocked with supplies,and sending out couriers. Also some filing and retrieving files from storage.  I learned a new phone system and the preparation of out-going couriers and handling the process of incoming packages and mail.  
Hardest part of the job was during tax season, switchboard and reception were very busy, clients and packages arriving at the office, at least 40 to 50 courier packages being sent out on one day.
Most enjoyable part of the job was working with the staff.

Proper training was severely lacking for me from day one. Equipment was old and never worked properly half the time.  Although offices are in Canada, IT help is in Africa and done over the phone or over the computer, so it is impossible to get any kind of help in a timely fashion.  You can wait anywhere from 3 days to two weeks for someone to get back to you.  At that point, you've figured it out for yourself; extremely frustrating.   If there is an issue with a co-worker (bullying or harassing) and you bring it forward, it's just not dealt with.  You are expected to work super long days from about Feb - June.  This is never mentioned to you in your interview.  Maybe they need to hire more staff so that people aren't working 12 - 14 hour days...  Sure you may get 4 or 5 weeks of vacation/personal time, but you also can't take it the first part of the year and then the last part of the year you can only take the time, if no one else has booked that time... so it's really not worth it.

While BDO is generally a commendable company, I caution against considering the Payroll department for employment. There’s limited opportunity for acquiring new skills, and growth prospects are quite bleak. The absence of a corporate ladder is evident, mainly due to a less-than-supportive upper management that hinders personal and professional advancement. Additionally, there’s a lack of a designated point of contact for work-related matters, resulting in queries being directed to various persons. Salary hikes and promotions are non-existent, creating a demotivating atmosphere for hardworking employees who find themselves feeling helpless during promotion periods. The management in the payroll department is notably subpar, making it a challenging work environment.
