I was looking for work, so I joined the IUOE Local 955.  I was referred to BFI Constructors through the OE955 at the Syncrude Site in Fort McMurray AB.  I was immediately sent to orientation and took some work related training courses.  I started work immediately.  It was safety minded, PPE offered on site including throughout my employment.  It was a great experience and I would work for them again.  All you needed to be considered was Alberta approved CSTS and OSSA, they provided the rest on site, your steel toe CSA approved boots, and long sleeve shirt and work pants.  The rest was provided.  I would recommend all Hi-Vis winter outdoor work wear for the winter months purchased prior to employment, including thermal underwear, don’t forget your face hands and feet, it’s cold 🥶.

What is the best part of working at the company?
My first job in the oil sands.. Thank everyone for the amazing experience.. treated with so much respect and encouraged to learn new things. They believe in me when I doubted myself..  I am hoping to return with the company in the New Year!!

Learning new skills with huge equipment..

My overall experience with the company was a good one, I never had bad managers and mostly all the employees that I had met got along. No workplace drama from what I noticed which is great. Managers listened to any complaint (and tried to fix the issue!) and it is generally a very safe place to work. The most of the crew I was placed with went out of their way to help me learn being a new apprentice. 

They are with the IBEW 424 union, after I was laid off I did not end up joining the union as they took to much money from me and told me they would not pay me back.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Everyone  got along and you could even joke with the foreman and superintendents

There were no stressful times except being away from home everyone was like family

Very fun but perfessional when needed

I enjoyed this place . They treated me well and good equipment and gave us opportunities to work overtime or advance to other equipment. Wish this company was still around the oil sands would go back immediately !!!

Company refused to provide correct equipment. I had to use a hobby welder instead of one suitable for the job.

Safety was predatory, they cared more about justifying their jobs than actually making the worksite safer.

Extremely poor planning meant I would be asked to stay late fifteen minutes before the end of my shift

I working in the bush in remote areas.
I learned how power lines are built and installed, and increased my knowledge around electricity.
management was very approachable.
The workplace was relaxed but steady.
The hardest part was building electrical poles.
The most enjoyable was working in the remote areas.

It’s  friend/family oriented. If  u ain’t sucking up and blowing up management heads u won’t go far. Friends with less then a yr exp are made foreman’s.All the favorites are picked on snow/rain days to stay. I’ve seen them get off and laugh when firing people they don’t like. It’s a mentally draining to work there. 

Pretty good bunch of guys.  Really good managers and supervisors.
Typical to the industry, the last minuet planning is hard to get around. The more seasoned supervisors were good but I found that they more or less stuck to their own plan instead of keeping you in the loop.
