BGC Okanagan

Since it was a collaboration effort between SD23 and BGCO to open more child care spaces, I can understand some hiccups, but we endured more than a few in my time with the company.  I grew impatient having to wait months to get materials needed for my program to run effectively, so I resorted to spending a lot of my own money so that the children had toys, and art supplies to use.  It was extremely frustrating!  The ability to run the program the way we wanted to was wonderful, as was the relaxed nature of the environment and staffing.  I do think that the company does need to do some further training with their managers, or have them revisit their licensing regulations though.   It's great that BGCO is so "inclusive" to the PRIDE community, I just wish they supported their staff with Autism and ADHD the same way.  Maybe I would have stayed!

Working for the Boys and Girls Clubs is a rewarding experience.  The After School Program is fun and challenging.  Every day is different as the children we are working with are growing and finding their ways through life.  We are supporting them and keeping them busy, active and safe while they wait for their parents to pick them up and take them home.  Along with the fun, they are learning, whether they recognize this or not, they are learning about social behaviours, as being part of a group.  This is an extension of the social experiences from school.

Working with children who will benefit from a strong role model and supportive environment.

It is run as a large organization with lofty expectations for unpaid staffing

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Team mentorship and the ability to be offer suggestions for improvement and change. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
High energy and always ready for anything.

This company's disregard for quality care extends both to the children in their care and to their educators. When it comes to providing quality care for the children, they prioritize sticking to a budget over hiring the most qualified educators. Additionally, for those educators they do hire, they offer wages commensurate with the lower qualifications, failing to recognize and compensate appropriately for the skills and contributions of qualified educators.

To know we were making history by reaching out to more and more children and families in the Okanagan Valley was very fulfilling. The Club truly became a place for everyone.

Lack of staff. High turnover rate

Busy, stagnant, lack of support 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Busy, scheduled, rewarding, fun

Class 4 or 2 is a great asset to have to transport students. Mostly an easy going job, which requires staff to supervise students, prep snack food, help clean dishes, help sanitize, sometimes help plan activities. Sometimes required to help with students’ behaviour. 

The staff at the OBGC are very kind, open minded, and allow for a good balance between work and home life. They are very understanding when it comes to personal issues. It is a fun place to work, and can be very rewarding. However, the pay does not reflect the work has it can often be very challenging and stressful as well

Supportive and friendly work environment. 
A great place for children and youth to have their basic needs met. Youth can acquire education, employment, housing and various other life skills training at the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Always busy. Can be stressful, and exhausting. Hours are not always ideal, and the wage is less than it should be for the work being done. Great coworkers - big emphasis on mental health which is ideal.
