BODWELL HIGH SCHOOL

The school has a beautiful campus with lots of facilities. 

The mornings start early, and you get one prep block off every day, with some lunchtime supervision duties and during my time we also had to teach one extra-curricular class after school. 

The school, owner, and principal have VERY high expectations from staff. Workplace culture is work, work, work not much of a work-life balance for teachers. 

I enjoyed the weekly Friday staff meetings to reconnect with your division. There are so many teachers and staff that are all always so busy you don't get to know anyone and build a community. 

You can negotiate the salary they offer. As a teacher, I did not feel valued for my work.  Some very nice students, but many students bully other students are very privileged and expect teachers to change their grades because they are paying lots of money to go to this school. So their parents have very high expectations of them too. Students described their time there during covid as being locked up in a prison with only 2 hours to leave campus a week. 

I did not enjoy working there. It did not feel like I was part of a friendly community. Everyone looks miserable unless they are putting a fake face on the students. The school is so big, as a teacher you don't get your own classroom, you are always running around the school from one classroom to another and barely have time to use the washroom or take a break for yourself. 


In my opinion, this place operates more like a profit-driven business than a true school. During my time there, I felt there was little to no direction for the future, and staff were often treated as replaceable. It seemed that decisions about people’s jobs were made suddenly, sometimes without proper notice or communication.

The work environment felt cold, unwelcoming, and in some cases, even hostile. I experienced what I would describe as dismissive and unsupportive behaviour from some senior and middle management. In my view, leadership was lacking, and internal communication was fragmented. There appeared to be a strong inner circle of staff who were treated with more leniency and respect, while others were excluded and undervalued.

Although working with students was genuinely rewarding, I found that the overall culture made it hard to stay motivated or feel safe. Based on my experience, I wouldn’t recommend this workplace to others who value professional respect, growth, and a healthy environment.

I worked in IT at Bodwell High School, and honestly, I wouldn’t recommend it. The way staff are treated feels really poor. People come and go so quickly that it almost feels like everyone is disposable. Looking back, I regret spending my time there. The place just has a very cold vibe.

The only part I really enjoyed was helping the students when they dropped by for tech support. They were always respectful and made the job worthwhile. But management? That’s another story. There never seemed to be any clear direction. Plans changed all the time, and turnover was constant. I’d set someone up with a laptop one week, and by the next, they were suddenly returning it and saying goodbye. You’d just get to know them, and then they were gone. It was sad to see and made the place feel unstable.

If you’re a competent professional looking for a stable, respectful workplace, this probably isn’t it. Chances are you’ll either quit quickly or get let go when leadership changes its mind about something. My advice: don’t waste your time.

My experience working at Bodwell was extremely negative, mainly because of the management, leadership, and workplace culture. The students were a positive part of the job, and there were a few decent colleagues, but overall the environment felt unhealthy, isolating, and unsupported. In my experience, some staff behaved in ways that felt entitled, unprofessional, and bullying, especially when they appeared to have close relationships with management or leadership. When concerns were raised, they were not taken seriously and were often brushed off with comments like, “that’s just how they are.” I did not feel genuinely supported or safe bringing issues forward. There was little meaningful professional development, and I felt ignored, isolated, and neglected rather than valued as an employee. Overall, this was a very traumatic and disappointing workplace experience. I would strongly caution anyone considering applying to think carefully before joining.

In my personal experience, this was an extremely cold and unwelcoming workplace. New staff are treated well briefly, but after a week or two, I felt management’s true colors show. I felt neglected, unheard, and completely disposable. My opinions didn’t seem to matter, and I often felt like my presence wasn’t wanted at all. From my perspective, this is not a supportive environment for teachers, staff, service workers, or boarding staff. I understand the current financial climate, but I still deeply regret working here. I honestly wish I had stayed unemployed and protected my mental health, which I feel was permanently impacted during my time there. The only positive for me was the students. Teaching and being in the classroom with them was the one thing that kept me going. Beyond that, I felt discarded and invisible, with leadership avoiding even basic human acknowledgment. Overall, this was a deeply disappointing experience. In my opinion, it’s a mediocre school with a poor culture and weak management.

I really wanted to love this job. 

The staff (in all departments) are over-worked. Pay is fair for the job market, but often you will be asked to "expand your roll" into multiple departments (for the same pay). Most staff members find that their role is wildly different within months of working at BHS. 

Turn-over is incredibly high. This means that you have the potential to be promoted quickly, but so does everyone else (for the wrong reasons).

This school did a mass lay-off due to a decline in students. Staff that were not let go were expected to pick up the slack. Workloads doubled, and nobody really knew who or where they were reporting anymore. Some staff members were replaced while they were still in their roles after the mass lay-off, and were expected to mentor their replacements. 

This job had the potential to be an incredibly rewarding experience. I loved what I did, but management culture and general moral effected my experience heavily. I would suggest seeking employment elsewhere before applying here. 

Working with the students at Bodwell was genuinely rewarding. They were the best part of the job and the main reason the work felt meaningful. Unfortunately, working with admin, management, and leadership was a very different experience. In my opinion, the school often felt like a sinking ship without sails: unclear direction, unnecessary middle-management, and poor priorities. I often felt teachers were pulled away from teaching and expected to handle tasks that had little to do with education. During my time there, it was discouraging to see many good, competent people leave or be laid off across teaching, support, counselling, and nursing roles. I also personally observed workplace dynamics that felt unhealthy and, at times, like bullying or mistreatment of staff. The pay did not feel competitive for the workload. If you need the money, do what you have to do, but if you are looking for growth, stability, and supportive leadership, I would look elsewhere.

The students were the best part of the role. As an educator, I found the workplace deeply isolating. The school speaks the language of family, but my experience felt more like entering a private household where the real circle had already been drawn. A small, long-standing group appeared to hold the trust and protection of leadership, while newer staff were left to navigate uncertainty from the margins. Management felt unpredictable and top-down. Pressure seemed to descend through layers of leadership until it reached those with the least power. The result was a culture that, in my view, could feel anxious, performative, and emotionally exhausting. Loyalty appeared to matter more than openness,  and belonging felt conditional. Advice to Management: A school should not ask educators to model care, dignity, and fairness for students while denying those same qualities to staff.

In my opinion, Bodwell has some real positives. The location is beautiful, the nearby walking areas are a nice benefit, and many of the students are genuinely lovely. I also worked with some excellent colleagues during my time there. That said, my personal experience was mixed. I felt the workplace culture could be stressful, and I did not always feel that staff concerns were handled in a supportive or transparent way. In my opinion, the environment sometimes felt more focused on business priorities than on education and staff well-being. For anyone considering a position there, I would suggest asking direct questions during the interview about staff retention, workload expectations, communication style, management support, and how workplace concerns are addressed. Listen carefully to the answers and consider whether the environment feels like the right fit for you.

This school has many well‑intentioned students and very hardworking teachers who genuinely care about learning and daily student life. Classroom staff routinely go the extra mile and often end up filling gaps left by administration.

Unfortunately, the broader management culture feels disorganized and reactive. Decisions are frequently made on the fly, with shifts in direction that lack clear rationale or communication. Structures and accountability are weak, so problems tend to resurface rather than be resolved.

A major concern is how leadership roles are filled. There appears to be a pattern of choosing managers based more on their alignment and willingness to agree with ownership than on relevant expertise or proven leadership ability. This perceived nepotism undermines trust, limits honest dialogue, and makes it difficult to build a consistent, professional culture. In many ways, the school functions as well as it does because of its teachers, not its management.
