The Good

- Good security experience with being hands on, property removals, medical emergencies
- Lots of shifts to be picked up
- A good amount of events to work at (ie; SoundWave, Rodeos)
- Mobile assistance/backup is reliable when needed
- K9 and Use of Force training is offered.

The Bad (brace yourself)

- Vacation Time; I booked my time 5+ months ahead of time.  I get called 1 week before my vacation time and was told that my vacation period could not be done as they couldn't find anyone to cover for me.  That's not my fault.  I booked accordingly ahead of time according to company policy.

- Company does not do direct deposit and it too cheap to do so.  You gotta pick up your cheque at the office all the way in the south side.

- Does not supply equipment.  You're required to purchase your own stab proof/Kevlar vest, security belt, and handcuffs.

- Relating to the point above, they do not compensate/reimburse/refund for anything related to work such as transit fare, equipment, etc.  The only option is to get a T2200 form filled out by them for anything used for the purposes of your duties.

- Definitely no employee morale or employee appreciation.  Without these two components, there's no motivation to work for them thus, affecting your quality on how you perform.

- No holiday bonuses.

- Pay is minimum wage.  Terrible wage for the amount of stuff you have to put up with.  Especially when you're expected to do removals of the homeless and attend medical emergencies.

- No paid vacation or sick days.  Vacation pay throughout your paychecks is not collected, but is distributed to you by each paycheck.

- HR is the boss, how contradicting.  Conflict of interest much?

- Anyone can get hired.  The quality and work ethic of new hires or employees new to the industry is very low.

- The company forces you to work like as if you're their monkey on a tight leash when you call in sick prior the day of the shift.  Like as if they own you and you signed a contract of your life away.  They will hound you through any nooks and crannies and crevices possible.

- They will get to know you by your first name.  But behind close doors they treat you like a number.

- Mental health.  I had someone dear to me pass away.  And there was no follow up with them if I was alright. or check up.  I know it's not their job but if they really did care about the well-being of their employees, they would do check ups/follow ups when stuff like this happens, am I right?

- HR/Boss replies unprofessionally in a aggravated displeased way by email when you ask them about worker's rights.

- Use of Force training is to be purchased.  But also can be T2200'd.

- Definitely not flexible with shift times.  Mostly 12 hour shifts.

- To be a mobile driver, you need at least 3 years of paying for car insurance.

- Very little of day shifts, mostly overnight shifts.

- No general security training for new hires or anyone new to the security industry.  You're basically a small little rat clueless on what to do and thrown out onto the field with the wolves.

- "Lead by example".  They tell you this when you are working with other guards but yet they themselves cannot swallow their own medicine.  They definitely did not lead me by example.

- Dog handler training is for drivers only.

- Did not appreciate the dispatch at the front desk making various flirtatious attempts with me.  Sorry Tori, but you will never ever get this fine piece of a**.

Overall, would I recommend BPSK9?  No.  If you value your mental health and your self worth, then it's a no.  If you have your own car, need security experience, don't mind buying your own security equipment, don't care about your wage, have lack of self respect for yourself, sure I guess.

The average Dispatcher in Edmonton makes 22.50 Hourly, with half as many duties as this company that will pay 15.00 hourly with a $1-3 Bonus.

You need LOTS of computer knowledge, as their data base is messy and it is constantly being changed due to the over complex system they have created, easily overwhelming new employees and adding stress onto the current ones. The management in Edmonton does not care about the front desk, and will not support Dispatch. You will will be doing everything, and I mean literally everything, with no support from management, only from other dispatchers. If you are not on the management's favorite list, you will be set up to fail- a perfect example is withholding the ability to do your job efficiently by not allowing you to have access to report programs ( which will be essential in your job) or having malfunctioning laptops, or letting guards pre-write their patrol reports, or simply piling on too much work where you will be written up if it is busy and you are paying more attention to the guards in the field than completing the argegous amount of Adminstrative tasks you have been given, while management is in their office watching movies and vaping.


The rest of the employees are great, and everyone else is very kind to each other and will respect your time and your self being. Other guards will look out for each other, and will help each other no matter the situation. Other guards will NOT allow others to enter dangerous situations whatsoever. If you are looking to be in the Security Field, this is a great place to start and gain some experience! But if you're looking for something long term, this company will not take care of you. 



Office Administators and Dispatchers please beware. 

Very little room for advancement unless you want to go for a career in military or becoming a police officer or similar field. Pay is 10 percent less than average, and for what is expected of you, too little pay and very little reward. Uniform is nice, until you have to pay the 850.00 to replace it. Would not recommend this place to learn the security field. Take 1 week off approximately $1000.00 on your own time and money just to get the skills for tactical side using a baton and handcuffs to get the 1.50-3.00 hr raise per hour. The other gear is also on your own as well, and since its tactical, your looking at top dollers just to keep yourself safe from being stabbed or other. Unfortunate since this company has been around for 20 +years 

I worked at BPS K-9 for just about 2 years and the experience was not good.  I worked mobile in the downtown core of Edmonton. 

Payroll: 
They pay you a baseline of $15/hr and then pay a $3/hr bonus. All is fine until you reach overtime.  At that point they just pay you time and a half on your base wage of $15/hr.   They are a very cheap and greedy company.  

Vehicles: 
The vehicles they operate are beat up and dangerous.  They are leaking fluids, clunking down the road, and breaking down regularly. 

They overall do not care about their employees.  They only care about themselves and making money.  They will never stand up for their employees.  They gossip about past employees regularly and seek out lots of drama.  

Would not recommend anyone to work with them.  If you would like to get good hands on security experience there are better companies in Edmonton. 

Management is terrible they only give praise to those who are doing a horrible job and then when someone who is working their butt off for the company if they make one little mistake, book days off, or call in sick they get punished.... 

If management doesn't like you then they will make your entire job stressful and push you towards quitting. 

Pay is way below where it should be considering they are a hands on company and work with Canines. $17.00-$18.00 for mobile drivers no added pay if you are a K-9 handler.... NO RAISES EVER

Stat guards only get minimum wage and will never get raises.

Over all this Company is not worth the stress you would have better chances ANYWHERE but here. 


BPS K9 is unique in that they are the only Alberta Securuty firm that opperates K9's As such it provides an opportunity few other can. Promotion is based on skills, attitude, and work ethic, and it is up to the individual to show they are capable of tasking on responsabilities. As for working for them I'd say they are far more employee oriented than some suggest, and safety and well being figure heavily in their operations. They have good equipment, and pay on the higher end of the indistry. 

Anyone giving more than one or two stars obviously works in Management. I've worked for many good security companies, and this is one of the worst ever. Poor equipment, last minute schedule changes meant to force employees to quit, and as suggested by the stellar one star rating, high turnover, and abismal working conditions. No matter how desperate you are seeking employment, give this company a hard pass. I wish there were one thing good about this sketch company, and well, there is. The K9's are nice... 

Worked at BPSK9 and had a really good experience overall. Management was very supportive, easy to talk to, and always tried to understand what was happening on site and in my personal schedule. They listen when you explain a situation, give clear guidance, and treat you with respect, which makes the job much easier even when shifts are busy or challenging. I learned a lot, gained strong hands‑on security and K9 experience, and always felt that the supervisors had my back. I would recommend BPSK9 to anyone who wants to grow in security with managers who actually understand the work you do.

Not a bad company to work for,you go do the job,and they give you independance which allows you to organize things properly,as well mentor other new people,establish guidelines with client,and follow your company site policies,it also allows for proper decision making,such as patrolling scheduling,see effectiveness of other guards on other shifts

Classic case of overworked underpaid. In my time with this company they had 3 different HR reps of that says anything. They refuse to do raises, will change your schedule without consultation, schedule you for events hours out of the city without consulting you. And many many more!
