I worked for these clowns for 5 years before I was unjustly fired. I had to fight for my severance pay ( and won) but choose not to fight for my job back because I was so unhappy there. Call labour relations before you consider a job there. They might be able to give you a general idea of their complaint history.  Senior employees there have a negative and defeated attitude. They have been beaten down to the point where there is no team spirit anymore.  New hires( and there are many) come in bright and shinny but soon become jaded due to the defeated work atmosphere. Very high turn over rate. If you are the type of person who likes to share ideas for a better, safer work environment forget it. Your opinion is not wanted or appreciated. If you insist on being heard then you are inadvertently painting a target on your back. Tool box meetings which are infrequent, should be a platform to make things better but things never change unless it makes them look good or saves them money.   
     The Edmonton ready mix branch tried to unionize ( the only branch that isn't unionized) and when they were unsuccessful, management intended to replace all the " troublemakers" . Due to labour laws, they were able to retain their jobs but now there is this black cloud that hangs over all employees, new and old. Management will smile to your face as they twist the knife into your back. There was only one manager there that I had any level of respect for and he was an ex driver. He also happened to be one of the unions busters who caved under managements threats of dismissal. The defeated and negative atmosphere is palatable. 
    If they could replace everyone with chimps and pay them in bananas they would. There is zero job security. I've seen them unjust-fully push out good employees in all divisions of the company and replaced them with much lower paid employees who are often required to do more. When they aren't capable of fulfilling these increased work loads, they are berated and put down. I still sometimes have a bad dream that I still work there and what a relief it is to wake up. Over the years I have had jobs that I didn't like and bosses I didn't care for but This place took it to a whole new level. I generally don't have regrets in life but I do regret wasting my time there.

I worked at the head office location in Calgary for many years and left to a much better company and I am glad I did. 

This company has some long term stability, depending on which department you work with or the demand of the position.  I highly  encourage anyone to be very careful of the office politics and to just keep your head down and work like an office slave.  I actually used to joke about that to my friends... because it's really true, only the extremely hard workers who like working crazy hard for their entire shift will survive here, if you get caught giggling, you will be glared at. Seriously such a stuffy environment and its sad because they have terrible turnover because of this.  They never say thanks for going the extra mile or doing an amazing job, they see this as this is what they are paying you for.  It's an old school mentality and management style that does not retain quality staff.  Maybe they have improved since I was employed, but I highly doubt it.  If you get a terrible feeling in your stomach on your first few weeks with this place, then listen to your gut 100% and search for new employment.   

Room for advancement is very slim as the long term staff never seem to leave.

My typical day at work Burnco was helping customers first, always answering the phone, putting your best knowledge forward and helping out the best you can. I learned a lot about landscaping materials and the math's for quantities. There was always a lot going on for both employee's and management so everyone had to work really well with each other. Working there was definitely different than all my other jobs I ever had, I mean, all the jobs I ever had were different but this one in particular was so fun and interesting because I love looking at landscaping and the design that goes into landscapers/residential projects and what they do with the materials. The hardest part of the job? Each task and duty had some parts to it that was challenging but nothing dramatic, if there was a problem we would solve it together. The most enjoyable part of the job was meeting and getting to know my co-workers, they made me laugh almost everyday and that made work a lot less tense. Although I really enjoyed it when I helped out a landscaping company and they liked their service so much they gave me a google review! That was so sweet of them.

When I get to work the day always starts out with morning salutations to and from everyone.  Upon taking this position I had no idea there was so much involved in registering, insuring and maintaining such a large fleet of vehicles.  It is challenging at times to collect information from all departments involved.  There can be a lack of understanding at times that there is more to fleet records and maintenance than phone calls and filing.  The filing is easy, yes, but each document needs to be reviewed and any errors need to be addressed before it can be filed off.  Sometimes it can prove difficult to track down certain information with so many people involved.  Management does their best to see that everyone works together cooperatively.  I love the people I work with, they are friendly, helpful, and encouraging.  Also, there is a small private gym available to all employees which is a great perk to have.  Clearly office stress is understood by the company and the importance to have the necessary facilities available to us to deal with that stress is valued.

I worked with some amazing people while I was Operations Manager at this business in Edmonton. I liked the executive and respected upper management. Not everyone felt the same way and I had to endure some very poor culture from my immediate supervisor. There was also some misguided people at head office that ran with the slimmest of facts; making judgements before truly understanding the whole story, or respecting the intuition and experience of my reports. 

From what I understand, it has improved significantly now that my supervisor has gone. And I'm glad. This means a new future for the company. With possible changes in the general attitude with HR going forward and the improvement of culture from abusive and micro managed, to more of a team environment; this company may do much better going forward than they have in the past.

However; all this is speculative and I must grade my experience for what it was. Poor culture and weak overall management while I was there.

The work is hard but rewarding. Understaffed with too much work needed, lack of equipment, a general manager that is dishonest and does not honour wage raises (by failing to respond) and has proven to be deceptive by nature. Co-workers are great, operations manager is very helpful and an all around great person, it is just a shame that the plant manager does not uphold the same values. I can say that in fact I did leave this company with more knowledge, skills, and more experience to better myself, but it would be wrong to not disclose that I left this company without being payed what is owed, it would be nice to receive what is owed from a company the generates hundreds of millions of dollars each year, which would seem like a penny to them. It just shows what this company values more and with all of this being said, you may now weigh the pros and cons to make your decision if you want to invest your time, well being, and possibly even your money to this company. Every day at work is different.  Concrete gets delivered to many different sites with many different specifications.  It is very much a construction culture where the hours are feast and famine.  This makes it difficult to lead a balanced life.  You are expected to work very long days in the summer and risk layoff or intermittent work in the winter.  The pay and benefits rival the best in the industry.

Management is very disappointing and has create a very negative downturn in the job culture.  Many employees are seeking new work because of the lack of integrity and ignorance displayed by middle management.  Upper management is not quite so toxic, but they are disassociated with the corporate culture and are either unaware or unconcerned with the direction middle management is taking the workforce.

A typical day at work would be to load up concrete for commercial or residential applications and deliver the concrete in a timely fashion. 
I have learned a great deal in the concrete industry as there are hundreds of admixtures to use in every different application of the concrete mix. 
Management was great and very verbal when it came to instructing what they requested, and it worked well with all of our drivers and plant personnel.
the hardest part of the job was not knowing when or where you will be working and you were on call 7 days a week. 
The most enjoyable part of the industry would be learning all the different types of applications you can use concrete in and being able to watch buildings and structures form.

Payroll has high turnover. Upper management is disconnected. Vertical org structure hierarchical. 
Miscommunication, poor payroll system, gossip, blaming each other. Payroll/HR Department is a revolving door with high turnover. Archaic old views on employee relations. Highly demanding environment with lots of OT hours. Lots of system errors in finance and payroll. Nepotism.  No support or understanding from upper management. Super conservative views on how to do business. HR Department has doubled in size since I started. Lots of inefficiencies due to lack of understanding and communication from HR Director.  No understanding from HR what Payrolls does. More respect towards Payroll would be better. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
There were some good people who were trying to make a difference. Company takes good care of its assets and equipment.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Highly toxic culture with owners who make targetted, personal attacks against top performers, minorities or anyone else they chose to bully. Leaders are too afraid to stand up to them.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Extremely toxic from the top down.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Being overworked. Tiptoeing around so as not to attract the attention of the owners. Dealing with toxic leaders who are trying to protect themselves by throwing others under the bus. Scrouging for kleenex and paper towel because the ownership refused to provide them.
