I started in this company while in school, seeking part-time work that would give me vocational experience that could start my career path. I took an open-minded approach and worked hard to develop my knowledge on neurodiversity, be trauma informed and abide by the mission of providing the best quality of life possible for those in care. I challenged myself in different settings to understand my strengths and quickly advanced in the company. In the beginning, I felt supported by my colleagues and genuinely enjoyed the work I did. My experiences with this company were rather obscure. Supervisors avoided working floor hours, which left many staff members improperly trained. The gap between work loads in the various houses across the agency is unfathomable. Employees are paid the same wage regardless of the workload required. Management will criticize your performance and suggest finding work-life balance, but God forbid you ask for time off once in a blue moon to take a mental health day or be present in your life outside of work. Not to mention, the company is reluctant to provide staff with ANY means. Financially, emotionally or physically. There is no WSIB for injuries, no matter how severe. There is inadequate support and compensation for prolonged illness which prohibits you from working. Vocalizing caregiver burnout, reaching out for support or simply wanting to be heard or validated for your concerns are disregarded because you don't matter. Everything is about the clients. Upper management simply re-iterates that it is part of the job. You would assume they know that the well-being of the staff directly impacts the quality of care that clients receive, right? Absolutely not. The turnover rate is high for a reason. The clients see staff they built a connection with, who created positive changes in their lives and genuinely cared leave due to depletion of mental health or physical injury that makes them unfit to perform the job. The harder you work, the more management will nit-pick, while turning a blind eye to lazy staff that they favour. Those who are lucky leave on good terms because they found a better job. Management does not want to see a free, innovative or out of the box thinker. Holding values in leadership and initiative and executing them will lead straight to negative criticism. Communicating that you require support and even vocalizing how you need to be supported will quickly turn into gossip about how you are incompetent, complaining from others and you will feel stupid for even trying to do your job properly. I took it upon myself to get to know the people I was working with across the company. I was lucky to meet some genuine, caring, supportive staff who grounded me back from caregiver burnout. I crossed paths with many compassionate people who have mentored me and changed my character for the better, but at what cost? You may get lucky and be placed at a home where these genuine people exist and your supervisor is reasonable, but they are a needle in a haystack. Good staff often leave because they recognize the toxicity and problematic culture of most of the agency. Some of the people in positions of authority are highly questionable in their ethics, how they treat their staff, showing favouritism, excusing or overlooking mistakes of preferred staff or changing/bending the standards they set in order to benefit themselves or cover for someone. With the type of work you do and the strain it takes on your mind, body and soul, you would think that people in the company are generally good. I often question if they are a product of their environment or money hungry for overtime pay to do the bare minimum, spread gossip like wildfire, strategically set team mates up for failure as leisure. I have witnessed and experienced bullying, exploitation, defamation of character from my supposed support system. The peak of the toxicity, which was my personal tipping point; is when I realized your success is dependent on your environment. With the policies of confidentiality in place, the long hours, the stress of the job, no proper support from upper management - you either fall back on your colleagues where you take a gamble on their sincerity or support, or you suffer in silence, let your mental and physical health deteriorate for an entry level job with high risk and stress. This company has completely torn me down, traumatized me and I believe it will take a lot of time for me to recover from compassion and caregiver burnout and feel fit enough to give another job like this a try.

The job will have you working multiple roles and the pay does not reflect it. It will have you working with dangerous clients, pay does not reflect it. Then there’s the management team, who will pick you apart every chance they get and 99% of the time never recognize the good work you’re putting in. 
Bairn Croft Residential services is exploitative of their staff. Save your dignity, physical and emotional health and go elsewhere. OH and, they will never be a reference for your future employment opportunities. Apparently it is in their policy to not be a reference for you. 

They have a single staff washroom (literally just one toilet) for each of their day program buildings, and they are unhygienic. Broken toilet paper holder, nothing is proper. No respect for their staff.


BCRS is a sinking ship. 


Received inadequate training and was immediately thrown right into the ringer. Suffice it to say, it is an alright entry position to get your foot in the door. However, that being said, I found the environment to be very toxic. Management does not provide support, issues with favoritism, and,  gossip. You do not receive a legitimate lunch break. This job entails a high risk of injury and the company does not offer compensation for workplace injuries. No sense of community at branches, and the turnover rate is extremely high. Little to no consideration of workers' mental health. Hours are great, but if you go part-time your hourly rate is reduced. Sometimes the company would provide free food/ gifts for holiday celebrations which was one of the more positive aspects of the job. 

working 4-12 hours a day. the job is fulfilling purpose-wise and seeing the impact you make. You also have an opportunity to do fun activities, be creative, voice opinions, and learn new skills, while not constantly standing. It is physically and mentally draining and if you don't have a good outside support system you burn out very fast. The houses have less turbulent changes and you get paid more but you have more fun and more impute on the day-to-day activities at Day Program. If you don't drive and leave closer to the residence you work it is very hard to get there and be on time with how the OC Transpo is set up. 

This place is a complete joke to work for. They advertise the position as a Behavioral Counsellor, but the reality is far from what was promised. The job entails cleaning the residence, doing laundry, and cooking nearly all meals for the patients. On top of that, you’re expected to be a personal chauffeur, running errands to pick up groceries and driving to different cities to drop off and pick up patients.

During the interview, they downplay these tasks, suggesting they might be occasional. However, they actually make up about 90% of the job. If you’re looking for an actual counseling role, this is not the place for you. It’s incredibly misleading and a waste of time for anyone genuinely seeking a career in behavioral counseling.

I have been working at BCRS for 4 years now and have worked my way up the chain fairly quick. It has provided myself with great life experience and helped me gain the experience I need to get into Law enforcement. Most of my friends have used this job to get experience into their career. I have a few friends who have moved on to become police officers, social workers, teachers and counselors. Would recommend this place for anyone looking to grow and gain good experience. There is also room to being your career here as well. The job can be challenging at times but all the staff are supportive of each other.

The shifts are good or bad depending on how you make it. If you come on shift and get your house related tasks done (laundry, meal prep, cleaning) and plan activities (colouring, video games, puzzles), and outings (Hockey Games, Rib Fest, Beach, Park). The shifts will be fun and engaging with the clients. You are dealing with human beings behaviours can be unpredictable but following the clients support plan and communicating with supervisors and managers will be beneficial. 

Its a job, the title looks good on paper thats about it. You make friends with other staff and theres never any shortage of overtime. Management needs a complete overhaul. Rumours spread like wildfires. 

At my time working in this company I notice that there’s not too much support from management, the only good part of the job is the clients, colleagues like to gossip and they will burn you out with too many clients at a time, I don’t recommend to work here, look somewhere else, they will drain your mental health.

the best part of the job is having coworkers you can get along with especially when you’re working a 12 hour shift. The work itself can be stressful at times with aggression from clients but the level of this will depend on which house you work at. It’s a job you can feel good about doing, knowing you’re providing care to others. The pay is not amazing but better than minimum wage.
