Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity

The review I'll leave of the Banff Centre will be bitter sweet, because I actually enjoyed working here at first. But then, all the little secrets started to leak out here and there and we learned about the truth.

I worked as a food and beverage server, and the only way to advance to either Maclab or Ravens restaurant is by waiting your turn, or having an amazing resume with tons of prior fine dining experience.

When you first start there as a server, you work in Vistas, the buffet. Expect highly demanding managers, supervisors and customers, all while earning 15 dollars an hour, with no tips. NO THANKS.

The atmosphere was stifling, and you are treated like a dog, or some moron oftentimes, but there are many great people that will love you, and that you will love so don't take this review as gospel.

I have the type of personality to "act now, apologise later" and Banff Centre will not have that. Make friends with your supervisors and managers quickly, otherwise your experience will turn to poison, just like it did for me.

I had a truly positive experience working at this company and am grateful for the time I spent there. The organization fosters a supportive and collaborative work environment where employees are encouraged to grow both professionally and personally. Leadership is approachable, transparent, and genuinely invested in the success and well-being of the team. I always felt that my contributions were valued and that my ideas were heard.

One of the standout aspects of the workplace was the strong team culture. Colleagues were respectful, motivated, and always willing to help each other succeed. This created an atmosphere where it was easy to stay engaged, productive, and motivated. The company also provided excellent opportunities for learning and development, which helped me strengthen my skills and gain valuable experience.

The processes and systems in place made it easy to stay organized and perform efficiently. Expectations were clear, and there was a strong sense of accountability and professionalism throughout the organization.

Overall, this company is an excellent place to work for anyone looking to be part of a forward-thinking, supportive, and growth-oriented environment. I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking meaningful work and career advancement opportunities.

The Banff centre is definitely a fun place to work for a couple of seasons, especially if you are seasonal and come in the summers. They are relatively flexible with hours/time off since they know many people come to work in the area to also travel and take time off to hike/camp/etc. The management is relatively poor though, not a lot of respect there, and my biggest issue was with wages. In my opinion they don't pay their staff a fair wage, and to make it worse there are tip-outs that customers pay to the Banff Centre staff (either voluntarily or mandatory such as with an event or banquet). The staff never see any of these tips. Food and beverage should be the ones receiving it but they don't get even a portion of it. This may have changed in the last year but last summer it was the case. Some managers are bad at managing since there is a very speedy system of promoting employees to these positions. Some great benefits such as free food, extremely discounted gym and services at the centre, free canoe rentals etc. Overall okay place to work, mostly good for location and opportunities in the area. 

the centre isnt a place for passionate people trying to make work better or enjoyable. I worked at the banff centre for almost 3 years and my mood/enjoyment of work went down considerable amount over the years, management is unwilling and unable to keep staff excited and engaged to come into work. some staff members have worked at the centre for so long their bad habits and shortcut methods have become standard practices that are taught to new employees. Fortunately while working at the centre you get yearly percentage raises and they had a good apprenticeship program which allowed for employees to move up and they generally promoted from within the company. The union was terrible for employees and after the 2020 lockdown the lack of representation and direction really showed. not all was bad at the banff centre you would get a one hour break daily, a free lunch, and subsidize ski passes, staff accommodation at the co-op is great and affordable, usually slows down around Christmas which allows for time off.  

Worst place to work. Housekeeping Department need to be revamp with new manager and supervisor  someone who has a strong leadership that can handle and control the department. Supervisors and Manager plays favoritism at work. If you did a mistake they will give you coaching if you are not their favorite but if your one of their gems even if you make mistake no coaching. Even staff disrespect them they don't do anything. They make inappropriate comment and gesture if you approach the Manager she never give constructive feedback to staff. Concern has been addressed to the manager and supervisor but nothing has been done until staff will just quit. 
Too stressful work environment. Many rooms to clean 35 rooms we are slave room attendant .Supervisor walk on the hallway making personal calls during work hour. This review and rating is for housekeeping not for the entire company.

I started at Banff Centre this Fall and I’ve enjoyed it. My job has been remote (in Banff) and they were helpful setting me up with everything I need. Perks and benefits have been great so far– discounts at the Maclab (that cobb salad is the best!) and free meals at the staff cafeteria. (free during covid. Apparently super cheap during non-covid times) I got to visit the artist open studios –chance to meet artists on site and see what they’ve been working on. (And enjoy wine and cheese!) We received free access to all the films in the Banff Mountain Film Festival this October, too. Everyone I’ve talked with so far have been super supportive, and patient. (Starting a new job, remotely, during covid is not easy!) 

This is for the housekeeping/custodial(building service worker) department A few good people keep the place running, but overall very poorly managed. Experienced Canadian will be turned down for inexperienced phillepenos time and time again. Also discipline is focused on non-philipeno employees. If you speak against management you wil be targeted and eventually outed.

 High turn over rate (saw over seven people quit or be wrongfully dismissed within a few months). Supervisors treat you as expendable.

Benefits don't kick in for six months.

The individual people who work here are largely great - some really lovely coworkers. However, effective communication is basically non-existent both from higher up and laterally. Be prepared to have no idea what is going on. High turnover = ever-increasing workloads. Disinterested senior leadership is more interested in entertaining donors than interacting with staff. Promised training/development is seldom delivered on. This place constantly makes things more complicated than they need to be.

Housekeeping is awful! They over work you the point of exhaustion and will keep working you. The managers and supervisors are AWFUL! They don't train you on everything or even properly and then get mad at you for not doing it right. Several times I was sent to work in building or suites I had never been taught how to do... they literally could not care less about you. 

The job itself and the other worker is not bad, but the management will make you want to quit right away and they don't care because they can just find new people to replace you with.
