Battlefield Equipment Rentals

The Job: It is not an easy place to learn, since the fast paced environment and lack of training make it difficult. As a rental industry, the main priority is getting equipment on trucks to customers. High quality work is not valued. Fixing equipment can also be difficult unless you are a quick self learner, since there is a very large variety of types of equipment. Most people who start, spend a lot of time unloading customers, or counting propane tanks or looking for buckets. You will not spend a lot of time fixing equipment.

If you are promised an apprenticeship, you will not get signed up unless you push for it. Even if you get signed up, management usually does not help with paper work or setting up your school portions. You WILL be expected to work 11-12 hours a day. Pay is at the lowest. Coming from another job, I took a $1 pay loss but i was promised a raise when I got signed up as an apprentice but I never got it. The company SOMETIMES gives yearly raises but they only give about 40 cents/hour a year. During your annual review they will tell you that you are lucky to have a job and that you are already over paid if you complain about money.

The Company: You literally are a number in this company. If you like to be unsafe or enjoy the lack of proper ventilation, then this is the job for you.  Every year you are promised a hi-vis jacket but they do not show up until after winter has ended. It is very important to note that SAFETY is NOT important in this company, especially if it will cost any money at all. they are concerned about silly safety practices that only relate to their liability. They make you sign a weekly safety sheet for their liability purposes that state that you have read the daily safety messages that are copy and pasted from the internet and repeated frequently.

The Environment: The mechanics in the shop are very nice and knowledgeable people. When you and them have time, they are great to learn from but it's usually too busy of an environment. The shop has a 5 ton crane that is the only reliable thing around here, but it only covers half the shop. You job is secure if you show up, because the company knows they cannot replace you, even though they act like they can. The only plus side is the experience you can get working on CAT equipment.

Overall I would not recommenced working for this company. At the beginning I had high hopes that were quickly extinguished. They lack of safety and proper training and equipment makes it difficult to work here. There is no reward for hard work and most other employers do not look highly on rental companies on resumes. Only apply here if you really need a full time job.

Like any company Battlefield has its positives and negatives. I joined Battlefield a little over 4 years ago and have worked at 3 branches. 
The first one was a small branch, generally everybody was positive every day. The Manager has worked for Battlefield for a long time and has worked his way up from a driver to branch manager. It was a great place to learn the basics about the company and my role on the rental counter. 
After a couple years I was asked to go to another location close by. One of our “hub” stores. This move was to allow me to gain the knowledge and experience required to become a branch manager. I was working under another Branch Manager who has worked for Battlefield for quite a long time, at this time he was running two locations, and needed an experienced person on the counter to assist in the areas he was unable to when at the other store. This was a great learning experience for me, but it also shows Battlefield likes to invest in their employees and their futures. 
The hub store was quite different than the little store I came from, there was a lot more going on at any given point in the day. My biggest hurdle to cross at this location was I no longer could do a little bit of everything. The store had its own departments for different areas, people to take rental and sales calls, people for just parts, people for just service, people for just running the trucks.  I am not going to lie, I was quite bored at first with just doing the rentals. When I could I would go back to the shop and check out equipment I was not familiar with. If I had a question I would ask the tech’s. All of which were more than willing to share a bit or their knowledge about the equipment. 
After some time there learning as much as I could, a position opened up in another region. A Branch Manager for a new store that was in the process of opening. 
Which I was successful in obtaining, for this position I was required to relocate my family. Which I did but was pretty disappointed that the company didn’t offer any kind of moving assistance. From the time I got the position to the time I started was 1 month.  Which is next to impossible to Sell and Buy a house and move a family.  Aside from that experience I don’t have any more really negative experience’s. 
The New store is amazing, I love my new position. 
Yes the pay could be slightly better but the company has more positives like

Great retirement plans. 
Room for advancement if you are willing to work for it and change locations.

You are expected to work 11 hour days. Work-Life balance is none existent.
The hourly pay is not up to industry standards, especially for the hours they expect you to work. 

Worked 14+ hour shifts on multiple occasions. Pay-checks weren't bad but was always still behind on invoicing and paperwork as there is very little support/help from the service manager. 

Don't expect any type of thank you or acknowledgement for working hard. Seems employees who slack off and are late everyday get more positive reinforcement than those who work hard.

Extreme lack of training in all departments at Battlefield.

The work environment is extremely toxic. Everyone, including management are always talking badly about other employees and customers. Management is very two faced, will be nice to your face but the minute you walk out of the room they're talking badly about you to anyone who will listen.

Management is very poor and doesn't seem to care about their employees. Legitimate complaints about fellow employees are not taken seriously. Service manager will let you get berated and bullied by a fellow employee, on multiple occasions, without a single repercussion.  

Confidential information is never confidential in the parts/service department. 

Only positive are some of the employees. Most of the techs in the shop, the dispatcher and two of the field techs are the best group of guys you'll ever work with. They were beyond helpful and always helped to bring morale up even on the worst of days. 

Working at a rental company, specifically Battlefield will introduce you to a very wide range of equipment and how to work on/service it, as well as the wide variety of uses for each piece of equipment. Working here has given me a massive amount of knowledge in regards to all the operations in construction, as well as a wide variety of equipment used throughout the industry. 

Coming into Battlefield with very little knowledge of service as well as knowledge of the equipment, I can confidently say I have learned the ins and outs of the majority of the equipment in the fleet. Whatever you are interested in they are fairly great for allowing you to work on what you show interest in. 

Management and the company as a whole are very focused on promoting from within and building their employees up to roles where they can fully succeed. 

In the workplace your coworkers will be very supportive and always willing to help and show you the ropes. The amount of knowledge between all of the mechanics is immense and allows for you to grow your skills to your fullest. 

Hardest part of the job is the long hours and lack of work/life balance most of the time. They are fairly lenient with allowing for appointments and personal matters for sure, and are very understanding within reason. 

The best part of the job is all the interesting equipment you come across, and all the experiences you can get through the wide customer base that Battlefield services. 

Battlefield is diffrent then anywhere iv worked, you're first day is done filling out papers and after that it's straight to work. No training what so ever. 

You're job depends on who you will be dealing with, the service manager is amazing.  He seems to be the glue keeping the place together. The store manager is terrible. Sadly. Very bad attitude and lazy. The district manager is a really nice guy, willing to do alot to help you. 

The wages are good, fair and you will be paid well if you have experiance and a basic set of tools. 
The shop moral is really not good. It can change from person to person though. So go figure it out for yourself. 
The machines are fairly complex and you have alot of things to learn. If you can get somone to show you. 
There's a great variety but you will either work on small stuff, Arial or cat. You won't switch between the 3 so decide what you want to work on before Aplying.

The service manager never seccond guesses the mechanic. If you say it needs a new door frame he will order it, huge bonus!

Overall, I was paid good and my management treated me well. I wouldn't be afraid to go back. 

The company would thrive if they would make a few changes as to who they have employed though. 

Worked in Central region (Cambridge, Waterloo, guelph) , mangers were great with what they were provided from corporate. Central region was good I just feel that upper management was out of touch with reality. Hated being threatened that if you got a ticket you were fired. Severe lack of training for new drivers they throw you with another driver for a few weeks then your on your own they hire g glass drivers and expect them to know all the rules of the road and load securment and let them hop into a truck that’s rated just less then D class then wonder why their cvor is so bad. Again branch managers were awesome corporate needs to get in touch with their employees and reality. pay wasn’t bad but wasn’t great either they try to keep pay rates secretive as to not upset the guys that are being underpaid they will pay you as minimal as you let them. Work life balance was my biggest issue. If your single this would be a great job but not for family oriented people, in saying that they are good at working with you for appointments and days off. 

Promised everything gave nothing, wasn’t given the tools to succeed.No laptop with diagnostics software,no cell phone with full data.No Cat SIS 2.0 service program,No work clothes/coveralls (was only there 3 weeks) all as promised.The shop had no WIFI (had to use my cell data to research product information etc) and use my cell phone for service calls.The shop had very little tooling and general consumables.Service truck was a joke.When I refused a service call to a open field at minus 40 conditions ( block heater install) was told they would lose the account if I didn’t comply.Did I mention that the building runs out of water after 5 minutes of power washing
Lol.Also found out that branch managers work on this PIP bonus system, lower operating costs mean fatter bonus cheques for management but seriously affects overall morale.Just say NO to Battlefield Equipment. would of expected more from a Company like Toromont.Very unprofessional and their rental fees are over inflated compared to competitors.




I have been with Battlefield for 13 years now, starting from the wash bay, I've now been a full time field service technician for 9 years.
if you possess a strong work ethic, and a desire to learn this place presents endless opportunities to advance and achieve your long term goals.

If you're looking to gain in depth knowledge across a vast scale of construction equipment this is the place to learn, unlike other companies where you may only be fixing dozers and excavators, you will gain vast experience and knowledge across all forms of equipment in the industry.

Over my time with the company there has always been a strong emphasis on team work and safety, although the hours are long it is a very rewarding career, you get to meet new people, travel to different and interesting places, and every day is a new challenge, so the job is never dull and boring.

In all, Battlefield is a great place to work, a family atmosphere. Long hours and hard work are a given based on the demands of the industry, but overall is a very rewarding place to work.

Run all cycle bills on a daily basis. Check company website for missing document images and any errors on invoices, track them down and correct and scan to HO. Run the rental counter. Extensive customer service, through telephone and renting equipment out. Invoicing., and some collections.

I have learned time management in a very faced paced and demanding atmosphere.

I love my co-workers, with the job being highly stressful, you have to take a minute and laugh amongst our selves to keep the spirits high

I am a huge believer in moral (happy employee is a happy company)

The rush of phone calls and walk in customers at the same time for rentals, information, service. It is difficult to please everyone in a timely manner, but not impossible, if handled professionally and kindly.

When the staff get together for a few minutes for a brief breather of conversation to boost the spirits and carry on with the day. This process I believe is huge within the company and extremely motivating.

I started with the company in 2011 fresh out of high school working in the wash bay.  I spent the next year familiarizing myself with with the equipment and learning basic repair procedures.  I then was given an apprenticeship and moved into the shop where i worked for a couple years before going on the road as a road tech.  3 years later i came off the road and back into the shop as the foreman on Cambridge's night shift.
I did that position for a year and a half before moving into the office as service coordinator.

Battlefield has been a an exciting place to work and grow.  Yes their are a lot of hours, which at times can be stressful and rewarding.  The senior staff at battlefield are awesome and hard working people.  Which makes for an enjoyable work environment.  I have refereed friends to come work a number of times and believe it is a good place to make a career.

If you are Hardworking, willing to do long hours and have a good attitude and get along with others their will be plenty of opportunities.
