I used to work for Bayer as a short term contractor and went to another interview for a longer contract. I would honestly say to stay away from those short term contracts - they will bring you nothing good. You'll lose precious time finding actual job while working like a slave for Bayer for measly $14/h. Mind you, this was the same salary I had with no completed education a year prior in a much smaller local lab. But according to the manager this job was perfect for a recent graduate! 

On the first day they'll butter you up how they regularly hire from their short term contractors if an opening comes up - so your hopes are high and you actually have an incentive to do your job well. However, what they don't tell you is that almost everyone you see working there is on that same contract you have, which means if there is an opening in the company, almost all of your coworkers are now your competition to get the job! So good luck with that. 

About the work/culture there - it really is a mixed bag. It seems like everyone is just pretending to like you, especially at the beginning. But once they figured out we were temporary everyone forgot about us. I mean, even the supervisor would never check up on us to see how it goes, we were joking with my coworkers that you might as well not show up to work and no one will notice! Additionally, if you enjoy a group of foreigners to talk in their foreign language while you and your coworker sit on the same table wondering why these adults are acting like preschool kids then maybe Bayer is the right choice for you. This type of separation happens regularly, even for things related to work so good luck understanding anything. And by the way, I say all of this as an immigrant myself. 

On the first day we were told that they generally give these jobs to newcomers to Canada and while that might sound good for you as a newcomer - don't set yourself up. Like I said, it's better to spend that time looking for a job at another place rather than hoping that Bayer will take you in for a longer contract - this won't happen. It's obvious why we're targeted for these kind of jobs, the pay is pathetic, you won't learn anything on it and our standards are lower than people who are permanent residents. You'll mostly do cleaning anyways. And on that note: the lab in Winnipeg is utterly unclean and dusty! If you have some allergies or sensitivities - again, good luck! My face was completely ruined with acne while working there but once I left it went back to normal.

The only good thing that I can say was the fact that they do organize a lot of events and there's some free food here and there. 

So a new job opening did come up while I was there. I applied and I was called a month later for an interview. It went smoothly, it seemed that they liked me, I even emailed them to ask a few questions and when the decision will be made. "Will keep you informed, I'll make the decision in the next few days". Guess what? They never called me, nor sent an email saying they found a different candidate. The employees there were too lazy to email 3 candidates of the 5 that they interviewed to let them now they weren't selected!

Very grateful for the opportunity given to me. Stressful and demotivating not  because of the workload but due to the way the unit was managed. People not qualified for the job were brought in because their relatives knew so and so. Even the (bilingual) job conditions were tailor made to accommodate and promote these persons ( whose knowledge in french language, both written and spoken, was less than basic). The new manager (who is not bilingual) recruited a bilingual agent and later on found that the agent's french was not satisfactory and other bilingual agents in the unit had to check and correct her work on a daily basis. That agent and another one who is not bilingual were offered permanent jobs while others who were more qualified had their contracts terminated. The head of the unit had such a low review but she was simply transferred to another department. The  hr people could not respond to my queries. An agent who had many many years of experience as manager was denied the post because she was not bilingual but later the job was given to somebody who is not bilingual. Not a healthy environment to work in. ...........

I loved working for Bayer CropScience. As a woman I felt that the executives I worked with never once doubted my ability, but rather encouraged me to do something new and creative even if it might not work. I never felt scared, violated, sexualized, and felt that my voice was always heard, considered, and important. My boss really tried to help develop me as an individual and made an effort to take me to conferences, recommend literature, offer support/sugestions if I needed, and intruduce me to new contacts and networking opportunities to broaden my network. Also, all travel is fully paid for and they ensure that employees are safe and comfortable in their accomidations and meal allowances. Employees are also provided with training and all the necessary tools to succeed (tech equipment, etc).

What is the best part of working at the company?
The highlight for me was experiencing work within a global company.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Most of the time, it feels like working in a production line factory. While they hire professionals for the job, they don't necessarily expect you to be an expert; rather, they value hard-working employees.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
It depends on which team you work with. It seems that the company's values can vary depending on the leader.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
We typically start our day at 7 am with a brief instructional meeting to discuss the day's tasks and goals. After that, we head to the growth rooms where we spend the majority of our day. This includes tasks such as: seeding, transplanting, crossing, harvesting, watering, etc. This routine occupies our time until the end of the workday.

I only worked there for a year with no possibility of extension so basically no job security.  I found it difficult to meet new people in different work groups due to a clicky environment.  The people that were nice were very helpful or somewhat accepting.  Different work areas were given preferential treatment so that caused riffs among people at the company. There was definitely a lack of training provided by staff members either because they were too busy or it wasn't worth their time considering they were training short term contracts. Strong management was also lacking in both GH and Lab groups which caused poor morale.  Contract positions were not valued to the same extent as permanent staff.  I found that there was also poor communication within a work group as well as between work groups.

I worked at a Monsanto Research Facility every summer during high school. While it isn't the best job in the world it has served as a starting point. They paid us the minimum wage with some extra tacked on, especially if you were a returning worker, rather than the lower 'student wages' that they were entitled to pay. As well as requiring no experience, this served as a great point for future job searches when I was older. "yea I've worked for four years at this place!" While other people my age had zero work experience I did. To top it off it doesn't even take your entire summer, they only need people for a few weeks when the corn is pollinating, so as a kid you still have a lot of summer to go around and now you have money set aside for whatever you like. I bought myself a Nintendo Wii after my first season without a second thought since I could now afford it.

1. Daily work is always challenging because product and performances will be dictated by weather
2. Business acumen is one business analysis cannot be just achieved and was innately practiced.
3. The environment on work is just like plain simple informal meeting yet professionally practiced.
4. no dress code and very carefree
5. The grueling part of the job is the season conduction of almost everyday/or every other day activities such as farmers meeting or harvest festivals and its preparation
6. The management always supports overall needed materials or collaterals for events
7. Plenty of skills learned like planning, organizing, coordination, budgeting, execution, managing, etc.

Worked this location for just shy of 4 years. People were great. Pay was great. All the overtime you could want. 

Spring 2021 everything changed. There was no respect or value given to returning employees. Opinions and experience were no longer valued. 3 of us who were consider Crew Leaders were let go with no reason given. Two of us, myself included were not even given the decency of a notice. They just chose to not pick up the phone for harvest season. 

Very unprofessional. Have zero skills in addressing contractor concerns or issues with staff. Would rather hide from a problem and never call you back than address it like civilized adults. 

They have no shame. No honor. I would not recommend taking a position at this location. 

A typical day at work included data entry, assisting where needing and covering reception (once a week).  I worked with some very nice people, who made everyday fun.  The hardest part of my job was the fact that I didn't have much work to do, my work was project based but my manager didn't always get me a project to do right away.  The most enjoyable was the community of people there, the company treated everyone well, including fishing trips, golfing days, bbqs and other team building activities.

The first year at Bayer I was in a different department where I was busier, it included maintaining customer data bases where it be updating information, adding a new customer or deleting a customer.  I set up pricing for products,  as well as tracked reports and assisted the Customer Service Reps with projects.

Gained many valuable transferable skills. Also learned how to execute field-scale research, operate farm equipment and many farming principles. Hardest part of the job was the physical labour, which was not that tiresome and I didn't mind volunteering to do. My co-workers and boss were great, we all had a good relationship. Most enjoyable part of this job were those I worked with, feeling proud of my work at the end of a long day, executing research and hosting product launching events at the research station. Work was different everyday of the week, overall we would always meet at our research site in the morning, have tasks delegated and spent the day completing them either individually or as a team.
