Overall not a bad job. Core of the job is going out to meet clients and start them with home support + acting as a community liaison for potential referral sources such as local hospitals. Clients and community partners were overall very happy to have you around as the shortage for PSWs in ON is crazy so being able to promise even the bare minimum was received very well. 

Which unfortunately just highlighted the extent to which this company is very stuck in its ways and is having trouble keeping up with the moment. Average age at the company was definitely > 50 and it showed in pretty much every aspect of operation. Which is not to say that it was bad, but just, out of touch. It was common to interact with people at corporate who were at their wits end trying to work out how to make the company grow again. 

When I interviewed initially there was many promises that were made: the job was flexible, they had a rigorous training/onboarding process, they were an industry leader with a strong reputation, compensation would be worth using my personal vehicle, and so on. I was debating between this position and another and what swayed me to Bayshore was that it was presented to me as a safe, secure firm with a proven formula for success. 

Reality was very different. Training was basically non-existent; I spent a single day out with a colleague and then was sent on my way. This caused endless amounts of work down the road when I would be randomly informed that xyz file was missing abc piece of paper, which I would then have to go back and complete for dozens of clients. Even 6 months into the job I was still "learning" how to do a case the correct way. This wouldn't be such a problem if the company didn't have endless levels of bureaucracy, but unfortunately even common sense stuff that in real life you would trust a child with, here you need to get a document signed and file 2 forms in order to do it. More training on day 1 could have saved me hundreds of hours of fixing stuff down the road.

The company formula was also not as proven as I was lead to believe. In terms of operations, PSWs were in tight supply, and I lost a lot of business simply because we didn't have the staff to actually service them. This wouldn't be a problem except that my position was graded on how many new clients I brought on; I was constantly asked to "win" more clients when it was open knowledge we couldn't service 50% of the business we were already getting. 

A related issue was the firm's community presence. Despite being an alleged leader their sales funnel was non-existent; the community outreach/BD side of the biz was done entirely through the care manager personal networking. Referrals came in randomly, and the company's strategy was to simply cold call hospitals and hope that the local discharge nurses like the CM personally. There was no "method" to it. When I took on the job I was essentially agreeing to build an entire sales funnel from scratch for my branch. This was not made clear to me and dovetailed with the training thing, where all feedback from management was simply "eh figure it out lol", not really the attitude I would expect from a firm with a proven method. 

Last big issue is that all the above was made worse by the firm being very stingy. Even simple stuff, like covering the cost of wear/tear on my personal vehicle that I was using to do the job with, were touchy topics; you can forget about larger projects like trying to become a foundation partner at a hospital. Compensation was a constant issue from day 1 here and ultimately became a breaking point given the massively increased vehicle expenses I took on to work this job.

Taken all together then the experience working there was that day to day I enjoyed the clients I dealt with, I enjoyed a lot of flexibility with how I did the job, and I was broadly free of micromanagement or toxic workplace issues, and I liked my immediate team. However, whenever I needed anything from the firm, I was filled with dread, because I knew that even a small ask was going to be lost in a maze of paperwork, policies and office politics and was not going anywhere. Even point-blank asking my supervisor for more direction on what to focus on/how to build the biz was met with ambiguity and a non-committal attitude; the result was that it felt like management was expecting the subordinates to figure out how to run the biz, not the other way around. There was an overall culture of "things aren't working but there's nothing we can do about it, that's just how things work here"

That said, I would work there again in a different position like CSC. Had I known at the front what the place was like, I would have skipped care manager and shot for a pure operations role; enjoy the benefits of having lax management and simple work, without the draw backs listed above

You have to phone two hours before you are ' available' to work
You will have few hours of paid time for the hours you are being sent out for. Everyday when you see your hours and how they are organized it is a DISAPPOINTMENT, 
You could make more money on a daily basis as a cashier at a gas station than as an educated care aide working for this company.
You will never be able to reach anyone in the 'top run'  office.they know you are calling to complain or call in sick, they don't want to hear you....leave a message so they can say later that they never received it. THAT'S MORE TYPICAL.
The scheduler is short and dismissive of your enquiries and won't give you MORE  hours, not their fault they are told how to schedule you, by  the higher ups,  its a closely guarded secret to keep you well below any thing near 40 hours a week, they are told to never divulge how many hours you may or may or may NOT GET, ' we are working on it' is what they are trained to say as they ignore your requests for more hours. 
You won't know from one day to the next how many hours you may have. But you will need to be available no matter what. You can't change their demands on you...the noose just gets tighter!
Complaining about it will only get your  very few hours cut even more. But first they will threaten you with loosing your job like its a precious position and not a life draining climate.
They don't care if you aren't getting enough hours to actually live on, only that you make yourself available to them so they can send you all over the place,You will be lucky to be compensated for 60% of your schedule,you'll be out in bad weather, late at night or early in the morning or both as many of the shifts dictate, they don't care! 
Your comfort and safety is not taken into account, they only care that you do what you are told to do with no questions or input. They don't want to be bothered with how you are feeling about this job, no matter what they like to call policy and procedure. It's exactly what the  unofficial p&p is! To control you to do what they need you to do. You won't need a brain for this job, it actually helps to have no brain or spine to work for the Burnaby Bayshore branch.
There is no respect, only a culture and climate of control and dictatorship.
They don't care.
It's not a good place to be a frontline worker. But if you get off on suppressing your working staff, dictating orders of despicable proportions, hey the office may be hiring.  I doubt it as the ones in charge are nicely nestled in there for the long haul. Lord knows they have over 100 positions open for care aides! They are always hiring.
Why do they need to hire so many care aides?....because once you work for them you will see....who would want to work under this kind of dictatorship. They do not tell you up front, no, you 'find out' as you run into one land mine after another....if they told you up front in the hiring process, you would never come on staff.
That's the problem, they hire you, use you, and when you realize you have been taken advantage of and quit, they will have some one right behind you....not aware of what is going to happen to them!
As new hires you get the bottom of the pay scale and that's all they want...never mind taking care of experienced staff already in place!
Why?, they make a whopping $2.00 more an hour!
That's not how Burnaby Bayshore operates!
Nope! It's strictly a bottom line focused company. It is driven to pay as little as possible so continuity of care is  largely missed.
The fact that clients like the care, is  because they have based  it on the hard work of the dedicated, educated care aides and nurses...not the awful office!  clients, even sick, physically and mentally  compromised clients complain about how the visits are scheduled and how often the office is calling, but when they  call the office to complain...it goes no where.  Bayshore isn't fixing this long standing problem. No one is making Bayshore clean up this mess!
Unfortunately if you are a care aide or nurse...the office is always your first contact...and that SUCKS! Think twice before applying there for a job. But know you have been given the facts from this site and others. Check out the rate my employer site for other staff experiences!

You will never know from day to day what your schedule will entail. You must give them the hours that they want, you cannot put perimeters around your schedule. if you  Want the weekend off...forget it... 
 They will require ten hours from you and give you maybe if you are lucky a 4 hour work day....spread out over the ten hour window. They are more focused and motivated to hire new care aides and supply them with hours than to respect and supply decent hours to care aides who have been with them for years
 Theymust feel if we don't complain about lack of hours or the spread in the hours we must be happy with them when the reality is that staff morale is low.
It the worst place  I have ever worked at. I am sick and tired of being treated like my time is not important.
My co workers health is being bull dozed by the bullying tactics from the schedulers and office staff alike.If you don't like something and dare to bring it up to the office, veiled threats are given of loosing hours or of being fired. According to the office ....we all do it and we all like how we are being treated.
It is beyond the offices abilities to  figure out how to make a decent schedule for care aide or client alike.$ years of requests falling on deaf ears...what else can you call it.?
 If you need a sick day off, be prepared to provide not just one sick note but two, one to take the day off of work, and another to say you are fit and able to come back to work. Why? because they know it costs you money and effort to get these notes
 Its a common request they make even for one day of requested sick time off so that you think twice about asking for another. Its hard to face your sick and frail clients day after day when you know that you are going to be shorted on your contract hours again and you don't know if you can pay your bills.
 You cant pick up a second job because the new offered positions are 5 hours in the morning and 5 hours in the evening...so you are bound to them and cannot accept hours from other places. You cannot pick your own availability.
If you don't believe me ask any one in  the Burnaby bayshore home health ....how is your job...do you like the working conditions.....
just see how many ads they are constantly putting up...it because once you see what they expect from you on a daily basis, you will realize they are sucking the life out of you....its not a career when  you have a coveted top of the line 35 hour a week position and you are only a few thousand dollars above the poverty  income.
If you don't believe me,
just try it for a couple months and you will see for yours self.
it is NOT a good or rewarding job despite how they advertise themselves. It is the worst place I have ever worked, I went to college to become the best care giver I could be, and because I expected my employer to give me decent and respectful conditions and was pro active in trying to attain them....they have retaliated with numerous half hour visits spread out over my ten hour window, too far distances to make it on time over and over it happens. If you need the EMERGENCY after hours nurse....well good luck with that one.....they are so short staffed it is offensive.
Burnaby Bayshore Home Health is a sick sick place
they may be part of the largest home health provider in Canada, and a top run company....but run as it is now, it will NEVER be a top employer.
If you really love helping people then help yourself and do not work for Burnaby Bayshore.
The great people who work for Bayshore are not being respected.
Keep your hollow awards and movie tickets, just give us an 8 hour day of work in a 9 hour window. And keep your word that you will provide it on a consistent basis.

As a PSW with Bayshore out of the Harrowsmith area I am very grateful to have some of the most incredibly kind and supportive clients. My relationships with my clients are able to blossom and provide families with the comfort and stability that they need during some of their hardest times.

I appreciate that this company has also put trust in me to work around my schedule to accommodate all of my clients needs as much as possible and my own personal needs outside of work.

I went off for some time after a car accident and will say the company handled that time with professionalism and respect. They checked in on me while I recovered and waited for a car, ensured I was aware there was support through the company if ever needed, and kept my schedule for me to come back to. Now that I’ve got wheels again, I can say I’m grateful and excited to be back at work and able to see all of my regular clients. That’s one nice perk about this company is that they do try to keep people’s schedules the same as much as possible with all the same clients on a regular basis. This avoids the anxiety that some home care service providers face, like not knowing someone’s physical condition or the condition and safety hazards their home may bring. They promptly deal with any issues that may arise with a PSWs schedule, as well as any client -  service provider conflicts. They take bullying and abuse seriously and do their best to keep their staff safe at all times.

Truly a great work environment and amazing office staff. 

The only reason I’d give it less than 5 stars is that I don’t exactly believe they do the best quality hiring. Some of the homecare staff have no previous schooling, or experience, which scares me a bit when we are supposed to trust these PSWs and nurses with providing quality care. I’ve seen them let things slide like a PSW being with a client for ONLY 5 minutes, refusing to help clients with bathing or personal hygiene because they “don’t have time”, I’ve never been in a position where I didn’t have time to help these clients with something they needed my help with. I find it absolutely insane that someone that hadn’t taken the PSW course and had 0 experience as a PSW got a job here and makes the same amount of money, at more hours than me… it’s bothersome and creates a personal conflict with me WANTING to go to work each day. I already believe PSWs are far underpaid, but seeing things like that is like a knife to my guts. Really shows you how replaceable you are.


Outside of this… anyone looking to try homecare out after years of taking abuse from nursing homes… Bayshore is your calling. As they are the higher paying, better benefits, and pay for milage homecare company in the area. I don’t suggest any other homecare company besides Bayshore!

I used to work for them and I would say that I wasnt really impressed on how they supervise and manage their staff. 

On my 4th month of working here, I was told that I needed to buy the company's uniform with their logo. I am ok with that, it's part of promoting their company and it's a way of making staff look professional. I get that !! But I told them I haven't had any shifts for the last 5 weeks ( I work casual) so can I at least wait until I get good decent shift work before I buy the uniform. What's the use of buying it when I will not be using it. Anyways, the HR or someone from Calgary told me its mandatory and I need to order it now or else it's not acceptable. After 3 days of having that conversation over the phone. I decided to quit. 

Around my first 3 months, I was advised to attend an orientation via telehealth. The first booking which I have agreed upon had to be canceled and needs to be rescheduled because of lack of participants.  They tried to rebook me another date but the date doesnt work for me.  I was able to rebook on another day that works for me but a day prior to the said date, they need to cancel due to technical difficulties or weather conditions, I can't remember. So technically I have 3 attempts booking that didnt work. Few weeks later, I got a phone call from HR stating that I really needed to attend the orientation this time and of course I cant agree on the date they ask me again. The lady from the other line told me that I have canceled 3 times and that's not acceptable. I was appalled listening to her. I almost wanted to punch her over the phone but I just told them ok throughout as I cant even get a word in to tell her I have appointment with my wife that day. 

Just to lessen the tension I just agreed and said to myself,  If something comes up again I will definitely quit. Hence I did quit after another incident happened from what i have said on my first paragraph. 

Another incident happen was ... I'm on my days off. I got a call asking if I could help out as a 2nd person. I said I cant. I asked them where it is and I was told outside of Red Deer .. like 45 mins away. It just happen that the person was living 4 blocks away from where I am. I am working on my other part time job but told them ok I will try to help I will not take lunch break so I can at least help the other person. I asked them if I will get paid for the mileage. The manager from Calgary said "no" because I am already in that area. Lol. I just shook my head but still did the job for an hour because the staff who needing help is someone I knew. 

So based on my own true story. You guys be the judge on how they run this company.

Very little training for important nursing procedures. Management is not professional nor experienced. They deal with very few nurses, and don't know much about how nurses learn or deal with things in the real world. You are hired for the company's profit. So,, they give you as little training as possible, and expect you to go above and beyond working like crazy with several complex  job descriptions. If you make the slightest mistake or a wrong comment( yes,... this company will even write a report up on you, if you even say the wrong thing)  you will get written up, and treated like you are the dumbest creature on earth. The managers do not have advanced certificates like ACLS yet, will criticize the nurses if they don't have it. You have to spend 40 dollars on gas, and 2 hours on the road, and you only get paid for one hour. Just one hour. And they tell you that that is fair. They are always looking and hiring not because it is a great company but  because there is so much turn over. They always have tons of positions open , because they treat nurses badly, and people are always quitting. This is a business. They expect you to be the best nurse in the world with no training , yet they treat you like you have an IQ of 10. The managers are very demeaning, and will literally tell you they are demeaning you. They treat all NON nursing staff , like telephone service people, very well with food, gifts, cattering, parties, goodies and cakes. But for nurses, absolutely nothing. In fact, they hate the nurses so much they will even keep nurses out of parties because they don't want the nurses to enjoy the goodies. They will also lie to you, and also the office staff WILL talk behind your back. They gossip about nurses in the evening after work, and the next day you wonder why the telephone staff is looking at you like you have a problem. And for all the work that you put into the company , they will never give the nurses any benefits. No nothing. The managers talk about no bullying, but the managers are the ones that do the bullying, so who are you supposed to report the bullying to. Managers will and will demean you for you to turn up at someones house that is 6 hours away, and you will only get paid for one hour. This is bayshore. This is how they make a profit. They pay the nurse little but get paid a lot by the client. So they take the profit. All the money goes to the directors for their very expensive parties where nurses are treated like dirt so they leave early in the party. The cattering is first class. They could have used that money on even slight benefits for the nurses that work so hard, driving the cold and dark , trying to reach some client.

I have to say the office staff were very nice over all.  But my supervisor never got back to me on several occasions so I found that disturbing.  I tried on several occasions to get a hold of him and he was not very professional as far as I am concerned.  
I started this job brand new to the field and fresh out of another field of work for many years.  I was paid a lot more in my previous job but moved so started something a little different.  I did have experience in a similar field as this.  I found this job to be very scattered in hours and you will be driving from place to place for $2 each place you drive to and from.  It would not be worth it if you have to drive more than 5 minutes per place as the wear and tear on your vehicle is not great.  The other thing I found that I was not overly thrilled about is the time that you have with each client, is not enough to do anything other than personal care for the individual.  It is very rushed and I found that to be difficult as I thought the job was more about helping the clients in other ways, but it was mostly bathing them.  There were a few who you could make a lunch for and light housekeeping but 90% of the time was bathing/pere care and dressing.  I realized I am not as flexible as I used to be so this was not as physically easy for myself to do.  I only lasted a short while at this job but found a new respect for the people that do it.  I truly believe that the pay should be over $20 an hour for anyone that does this job.  I can tell you that the clients for the most part were very nice people and very welcoming.
Bayshore - especially the girl that hired was very accommodating.  
They do pay for the training and they do have part time and full time benefits.  You do have to pay out of your pay check for part of this package but it is fairly reasonable.   
I must say, I didn't like how if a client cancelled within a short period of time, you lose the pay for that hour or whatever time was scheduled.  I was shadowing another worker and out of her 5 hours scheduled, two of those hours were cancelled and she and I lost that.  I get it that stuff happens but I found this difficult to imagine if you needed a regular job and hours to pay your bills and your day hours change just like that.  I believe that if you want to have a successful amount of hours to be full time, you must open your hours of work from early morning until bed time unless you work in an nursing home like setting. 
Over all, like all places it has it good and bad.  The people make it most worth while.

Management has favourites and treats others unfairly.
Talk about other staff when they are away to present staff
No communication with other office staff
Requests for time off are not approved but management takes 2 personal trips and other office staff take vacation during that time.  Unfair
Management makes sure they take their vacations first whether office is short staffed or not.
No recognition or thanks for staying late on your own time to get work done just to get behind again the next day.
Told daily that all visits must be filled before going home at the end of the day but overtime and compensation are never given.
Orders are yelled out of offices to other staff even if they are on the phone or speaking to field staff.  Very annoying and distracting.
Far too much to do in a day that is expected of you.  They only care about statistics
Complaining to upper management backfires when its brought back to office management though it was not handled professionally.

Director goes into asst managers office closes the door and complains about office staff, then assistant comes out and makes office staff feel they arent doing a good job on a daily basis.
Office staff never feel they are doing a good job and are appreciated.
Office staff struggle to get work done while management congregate in each others offices for non important meetings. Laughing joking and talking about family or fashion.  Closed doors doesnt mean coversations cant be heard when they are loud.
Management shop online and have family video calls during work day while office staff dont even get their lunch.
Field staff are not dealt with properly and in a timely manner for performance issues which makes scheduling more difficult...
Unreal expectations of office staff and field staff.
Good luck getting a raise. Nothing for years and then only 2%
Office staff come in to the job being happy and positive but are soon knocked down to being stressed, unhappy and low moral due to office expectations, poor management and workload.
Could be a great place to work and a forever job if it was ran properly. 
Upper management has improved but needs to spend lots of time at branch and see how it is.
No job security. People are let go then later the same job is recreated and filled by someone new. No loyalty.

Happy to have left the position as not all jobs and management are like this

I worked at the Halifax, NS location for five years as a patient attendant.  What began as an opportunity for me to gain experience in the health care industry, as I was currently a psychology student  (at the time I was pursuing a B.A. in Psyhcology), and an individual with a Professional Counselling degree and a degree in Youth and Family Support Work, and wanted hands on experience working with individuals requiring one-on-one care, turned into a nightmare.  Normally, I would not consider giving a bad review unless it was absolutely warranted, because I understand the value of a good word-of-mouth review, and the repercussions of a bad word-of-mouth review, but I felt it necessary to do so in this case.  There is absolutely no communication between field staff and those working in the office; respect is non existent.  For those field staff who go above and beyond the scope of their job, truly enjoy and love what they do, and try to make a difference in the lives of the clients they work with every day, there is absolutely no recognition.  Shifts are constantly cancelled at the last minute without any warning, and the four hours that they're supposed to compensate you with for the loss of a twelve-hour shift is often not payed out.  Complaints from the field staff concerning poor working conditions in some instances are ignored; experienced staff are often left on the sidelines begging for shifts while new hires are offered full hours.  I would expect that a company rated as one of the best 50 companies to work for would go the distance in creating a more positive work environment, maintaining open communication, and ensuring transparency when it cmes to shift allocation.  Unfortunately, Bayshore does not see fit to do any such thing.  I have since left to pursue a private counselling practice; I truly miss the work I did as a patient attendant in the hospitals, as well as the patients I worked with.  However, I wasn't willing to 'adapt' to the toxic environment Bayshore allowed to continue.

The job title for CSC nights & weekends should be changed to “stressed-out bad news goblin” because that is what you become SO quickly once you’ve begun doing the job. 

The training starts out promising. Everyone tells you it takes months to get good at this job and that there’s room for mistakes and to learn and ask questions. This is a lie. 
As you train you are exposed to the two scheduling teams during the day. In my office there were about 16 CSC’s during the day doing all the scheduling, offer acceptances and new client coordination. At night, that team shrinks to 3-4 people with one running the front desk for the clinic until 8pm. It is so busy during the shift that by the time my break hit I was ready to cry and never go back. How many times in one 8-hour span can a person tell someone in need of home care that we just don’t have the staff to provide the care we promised? And if you mention that it bothers you that there are clients being left to sit in their own filth because we can’t retain staff, you’re basically just shrugged at and told that’s how it works. 

I had SO many questions about specific scenarios that popped up once I was out of training and there was really and truly no one on my shift to ask. The established CSCs on the shift with new people end up just doing most of the work because there is no time to teach so the new staff are expected to figure it out and risk messing up someone’s care (and be accountable for it despite not really understanding how to make better decisions in the role) or they sit there paralyzed with indecision while their co-workers run laps around them trying to get everything done. 

When I submitted my resignation I was treated as if I had broken a blood pact and the HR manager refused to accept it when I told them the job just wasn’t for me. They went so far as to ask me if I was just being hard on myself! 

The promises made in the interview around training are a lie. The money is not worth the stress. The interpersonal stuff between staff is an unhelpful addition to an already bonkers work place and the treatment of those who are struggling is dismissive at best. I would avoid working for this company altogether as an administrative professional; it’s closer to a call center than an office setting.
